Spanking clean?

I think a father who writes,"Widowed after 32 years married result best daughter ever" in his profile should get nothing but gratitude from his daughter.

So Jennifer no more "Ewww". Rich is frisky and clever and a great addition to the Complaint Department so seeing as he's one of my favorite members you better be nice to him! If necessary I'll put that in the rules.

Thank you to all the Complaint Department members who voted for Rogers book for BOM. Your support is tremendously appreciated!

I am angry that you have forced me to shout "Hooray! for Roger" and add my congrats on being the only author ever to have two sagas of the Mahdist Wars selected as Book of the Month. I'm so thankful that your writing has not only made me a ribald rabid fan but has brought reading pleasure to many others. I hope this selection of Gregory's Story will bring lots more readers to come to know and love Gregory and Zaki and hopefully the Rainbow "brothers" too as I'm sure they will want to read A Life Apart as well.

Preston | 20148 comments The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not only decided to do nothing about Putin's antigay laws at the Olympics to be held four months from now in Russia but has approved it by stating the IOC is "fully satisfied" it doesn't violate the Olympic charter's anti-discrimination clause, and pronounced Russia ready to host the 2014 Winter Games.

The freaking donkeyholes on the Olympic Committee, the fooking elected representatives of the frigging governments of the US and UK and all participating countries are allowing Putin to have the prestige of the Olympics while condoning his antigay laws and doing nothing to insure the safety of athletes and spectators. Putin has declared the Olympic site and miles around as a no protest zone to quash the voices of human rights advocates.

Rich | 472 comments How can dog food suppliers promote healthy foods that have grains, veggies and claim this is the best diet available.
Really. Dogs have been domesticated for tens of thousands of years. SEE canis lups familiaris.
The vast majority of this time dogs ate MEAT.
Dogs did not get a shovel and dig up carrots or call a Chinese take out joint to get rice.
They ate meat!
So nature was satified with meat for eons but now we know better, REALLY.
I for one will continue to feed my dog Cujo table scraps and odd dog food suppliers who happen by.
Thats my complaint.

message 5275: by Rich (new)

Rich | 472 comments Lori dear
Of coarse you are correct
The point on which my arguement rests is that over hundreds of years and through climatic trials,[ice age] dogs thrived on meat. Vegetables and grains were often not available.
How pray tell dog food manufactors claim a diet of rice and peas and carrots is better than a diet that nature has validated over such a long period.

Roger Kean | 17278 comments Lori wrote: "I would like to complain that missing episodes of my favorite SF show have been found: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainme..."

The BBC's trouble with preserving recorded programs like Dr. Who from the early 1960s is typically put down to "losing" or "destroying" tapes. The real problem was the cost of the Ampex tapes, $300, or $2,550 in today's values. And that bought you an hour's recording (but only one show per tape was possible, so a half-hour was the same cost as an hour). At a time when an episode of Dr Who cost approximately $500 to stage, all-up except the recording tape, you can see the BBC couldn't afford not to reuse tapes, at least for 3–4 further over-recordings. So the only way the episodes were preserved was if they were recorded onto film for sale to other countries – which, of course was not of a very good quality.

Add to that the infancy of Ampex video recording – the first usable machines started service in 1957 in the U.S., about 1958–9 in Britain – and the lack of editing, it's amazing anything survived. Those pre-editing early days, they had to do the episode like a stage play, all in one take, the huge EMI studio cameras roaring around like racing cars to get from scene to scene, shot to shot, which is why the BBC TV Centre studios were so vast, to fit in all the scenery.

Of course, if an actor fumbled a line, and the director had to pick up and carry on, an editor from the film department was brought in to wield a scalpel, cut out the dead section, and glue together the tape. That precious, expensive tape! You may imagine the actors on Dr Wo trembling in their boots every time they set out to record, each praying they wouldn't be the one to risk an Ampex tape by fluffing their lines. Talk about stress!

Sponsor's note Roger Kean worked as a television film editor for various British companies, 1972–82, including stints as a film insert editor for BBC drama productions, and greatly mourns the loss of BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London to the march of blind digital progress. Readers of the Zack Boys of… series of illustrated novels, which he writes with his partner Oliver Frey (a.k.a. Zack) will find a detailed two chapters which take place in the Top Of The Pops studio at BBC TVC, set in 1975, when the "temple of taste" was at its height, and DJ Jimmy Savile was doing terrible things to the young sparks who liked to dance.

message 5280: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Thanks Roger. Yeah, I was aware of some of the reasons for the loss of those shows (and Doctor Who isn't the only show missing episodes either). A number of episodes were preserved by the fans themselves, filming their TV sets while the show was on as well as recording the audios on tape recorders.

In William Hartnell's case on those flubbed lines, well, let's just say that his memory wasn't all that great, but it certainly added to the character!

I'm complaining that readers do not know where to find these two chapters.

Rick | 15796 comments I most complain that this conversation is not taking place on the Doctor Who discussion thread. But I'm more than happy to have the good Doctor popping up willy-nilly on every discussion board.

Yes, it is interesting how "lost" becomes the acceptable term for purposely destroyed/recorded over/replaced because of the economics involved. Still, as Lori points out, "lost" signifies that those episodes no longer exist as videos that can be viewed.

That being said I am THRILLED that some of those episodes that I feared I might never get to see may surface in the near future. It will likely take months/years to determine what it available, make sure it is salvageable and get it either broadcast (which will probably happen) and then released on DVD. But it is still extremely exciting that some (maybe even ALL [he thinks while stupidly crossing his fingers and toes]) of those "lost" episodes can be seen again.

I'm annoyed that the gods of Mt. Olympus are fickle and unpredictable so you can't count on them to force your father to get you the cards. If the Greek god of war Ares won't order your father to buy the gift card, perhaps the Roman god of war Mars will. Give Mars a try and see.

I'm filing a complaint that these books are so predictable that I can tell you right now what happens in Boiz of the West End. Since it's the West End which is London's theatre district, I'm sure Mike gets a job as a chorus boy in a big musical but one day the star of the show is killed by aliens refueling their UFO and the director chooses Mike to play the lead which he does so well that he become a rich and famous overnight sensation.

However one night he sees a cute young blond boy in the audience and instantly Mike realizes he is gay and it's love at first sight with the blond who is of course Gil. He throws away his theatrical career in order to live with Gil in a unheated, 4th floor walk-up, one-room flat in a run down tenement in the gay ghetto. They get a meager income from hustling because their pimp, a fellow named Rose Rosen takes 99 percent of their earnings as his cut. Rose is producing a porno film in Italy and forces both boys to become unpaid fluffers for the film which stars Jimmy Seville.

Just your typical formulaic love story.

So I bet I guessed predicted the plot exactly and now Zack will have to rewrite the book to discredit my intuitive nature.

B.D. you are such a trouble maker. You of all people are so very much aware of the how un-manscaped the character is that Daniel will portray:

ALLEN GINSBERG:

I would go even further than prohibiting manscaping the actor. I believe if he is truly going to genuinely portray Allen Ginsberg he needs to get his uncut cock to a mohel and go through a bris. I suggest you lead the growing movement demanding to Circumcise Daniel Radcliffe so he can properly play Ginsberg.
