They can change procedures but they can't stop family dynamics. Who does a parent go when they can't get their computer working right: a $100/hour technician or their 12 year old kid? To the child of course.

"Sorry dad I can't fix it because I'm not the account holder so I don't know your secret password." "Honey, what's the administrator's password for this thing anyways?" "It's Donna Does Denver or Peggy Pegs Peter one of the porn videos by the DVD play in our bedroom. I wonder if that nice Linda Lovelace has any grandchildren by now?"

"Get real babe, who would marry a slut like that?. Okay son the administrator's password is peggypegspeter." Sure dad, I'll take care of it."

The kid had probably long ago changed the password to DaddyPeterPegsPeterJr but if not, he now has the adult password he needs to watch all the porn he wants.

(His favorite is the porn movie version of the Zack's sexual graphic comic book Bike Boy Rides Again where there is lots of noncon sex with big brawny guys raping sweet little boys.)

So they can change the technology, change the law, change the process but they can't change the fact that 12 year olds are already as Roger put it, a "master race of IT professionals intimately conversant with every intricacy of VPNs and web proxies..."

Preston | 20148 comments Regretfully I must announce that the FREE EBOOK CONTEST is over.

Congraulations to Eric Alan Westfall who was the winner of a free ebook of Eric Alan Westfall's The Song Roger Kean's 145,000 word novel Gregory's Story which is the companion novel to his epic story of love and war A Life Apart.

While is is not necessary to read A Life Apart first, it is recommended because it will provide more enjoyment and depth knowing some of the common characters in these stories and no doubt both would be useful as background to the third book in the series which is still a work in progress.

The Complaint Department thanks Roger for donating the e-copy of his book Gregory's Story which is another masterpiece of love and hardship during the British Mahdist Wars in North Africa. There are many tender moments but also some very scary stuff our two lovers must face in carrying out Gregory's military duties and solving the mystery of his father's fate during the Mahdist Wars a decade prior.

The book is available on http://www.smashword.com and Amazon.

Once again congratulations Eric.

Roger Kean | 17278 comments Congratulations Oh, bad luck, Eric! I hope you enjoy it. :)

message 4957: by Eric (new)

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 386 comments Wow! What a great surprise! Geez, what kinda rotten luck is this, winning a prize that requires me to spend money before I can enjoy it? Kind of like those "free" offers on TV and elsewhere that "only" require you to pay USD $37.50 (Euro 28.25)for shipping and handling.

I realize now that this was all just a sneaky ploy on Roger's part to increase his retirement fund, or help pay for the next vacation to Gstaad or wherever. But I just do what I'm told, and I was told I had to read A Life Apart first or I couldn't possibly understand, much less enjoy Gregory's Story. So Roger now has a wee tad more royalties from Amazon.

Oh...and this is the first thing I can recall winning since roughly 1975ish, when I was at the old Eagle bar in Washington, D.C., and won a silver (at least in color) eagle's-head belt buckle. Hmmm. I also have a vivid memory of "winning" Jon, 6'3", blond, blue-eyed, muscles for days, who loved to be...ah, but that's another story.

Okay, how do I actually claim the book? I clicked the Smashword link and it took me to the main page, and a search found the story at $4.99. What did I miss?

Again, thanks.

Eric

You must order the book. Normally ordering a book requires you to pay money but during the ordering process it will show a place for a coupon code so instead of using money use the code I sent you in a PM. If you use a Kindle download the book in .mobi format. Other formats like ePub are also available.

It is enjoyable but not necessary to read A Life Apart since Gregory's Story is a complete novel on it's own.

Preston,

I hope you didn't take all of that stuff about "having" to buy/read A Life Apart seriously...I was just trying to be humorous. It made no sense to me not to read the first of the series before the second, even though they are standalone books.

And thanks for the heads up about the PM. My gmail is on all the time and so I see when something comes in, but I have to remember to manually go check for PMs...and it didn't even occur to me to do so.

Mea culpa.

Thanks again.

Eric

Preston | 20148 comments Eric Alan wrote: "...I was just trying to be humorous..."

And you succeeded as usual. I always enjoy your creative comic twists :-) Pointing out that it can be read as a stand-alone was more to let folks who weren't aware of it know. The people from the first book do show up in the new story so readers can catch up with their lives but as the title makes clear, this is Gregory's Story.

There are many great reasons to read A Life Apart. You learn what a zareba is and all sorts of true and detailed historical knowledge and research that went into the story. Which brings to mind that some people read the book and then find out there is a glossary at the back of the book while it might be wise to consult the glossary first or as needed.

Also the beginning not only sets up the plot but the shows the genteel and oh so proper home and schooling of the Rainbow "brothers"which makes a great contrast to the story of Edward and Richard heroically fighting in the Mahdist wars.

Most importantly it is a great and unique plot and story that should be savored and enjoyed for the adventure and loves it portrays. Then when characters in the first book briefly appear or keep popping up you'll know who they are and which guys they had sex with which is always fun. That includes Harry "Smarmy" Vane who will have his own story in Roger's work-in-progress Haary's Great Trek. Yes Haary not Harry because those Pathans have such strange ideas about pronouncing English names. I'm excited about that book and it hasn't even been written yet.

As for the PM, you wouldn't give me your email let alone invite me over for a friendly spot of tea and crumpets so how else could I give you the top secret coupon code for the free ebook copy of

Boyd (boydwalker) | 2304 comments It's a terrible shame that the funny but heartwarming movie of a family of Italian immigrants in Canada who have a gay son and come to be proud of him isn't seen by more people. The movie is called Mambo Italiano and the full movie is on Youtube at this link:

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments I must complain that I have seen bits and pieces of this unbearably cute movie on Logo a few times (back when they were actually showing something other than Urban Legend and horror flicks ...).

I would also like to recommend (though it's the middle of summer [i.e. it's not the Yuletide right now] and will cost money) the sweet movie Make the Yuletide Gay , because the parents are a hoot, don't ya know.

Nasty thing that page ordering. It was the only one sent to you but maybe publisher Bruno Gmünder ought to check that it's not in any copies they intend to sell. A very unhappy thought. It's a very expressive cover that international legend Zack has drawn for this exciting, action packed book.

I am horrified to think I may not be able to get a copy of one these rare hard-to-find jigsaw puzzle collector's-item editions of the Zack's Blood and Lust. ;)

message 4982: by Eric (new)

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 386 comments Has anyone checked the ebook versions to see if the same/similar screwup happened? While it's true that the paperback issue may just be an "assembling the pages before binding" issue. But...maybe not.

Just a thought.

Eric

message 4983: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I'm sure the ebook versions will be fine, and this is a printer error, although technically a strange one. Normally, if a pagination error occurs, it should affect all the print run, but that isn't the case (they're already checking warehouse stock in Berlin to be sure, but all HQ copies are fine).

message 4984: by Roger (last edited Aug 01, 2013 08:42AM) (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments The ebook version, however, will be missing Zack's illustrations, thanks to Apple and possibly Amazon refusing them with drawings in. Print is okay, just not in the ebooks…??

Rick | 15794 comments Roger wrote: "The ebook version, however, will be missing Zack's illustrations, thanks to Apple and possibly Amazon refusing them with drawings in. Print is okay, just not in the ebooks…??"

AND another reason why I prefer a printed copy. They also can't take the physical book away from when the laws change some crazy fundamentalist decides that Blood and Lust is offending them so no one should be able to even know it existed to begin with.

I'm annoyed to ask whether it's because some of us are too busy being annoyed to have time to complain about it? This week has inhaled to the extreme, though I think things have calmed down, I'm still a little stressed.

Screaming is a therapeutic way to deal with stress, true, but I found a nice walk over to the main library helpful too and I found an Eleventh Doctor book by David Llewellyn in the library bookstore for $2 so I'm a happy camper right now!

Roger Kean | 17278 comments Due to a stupid bird building a nest in a gutter-gully and causing a biblical flow in the wall of the house, creating seeping damp, an insurance claim, men to remove all furnishings and fittings (millions of books and DVDs as well), men to remove wall paper and blown plaster, and fit giant dehumidifiers and fans… can't use the surround sound amp for lack of speakers, so only satellite TV works… and there's never anything on worth watching. Ah, wait. Brainwave. Ever heard of HDMI? Yes! DVD (BluRay) player has an HDMI out (to the amp) and TV has and HDMI in (from the amp). Connect DVD player direct to TV with HDMI cable (supplied). DVD works! Yay!

No surround sound, though, and very echoey in a room emptied of everything but a comfortable orange box to sit on.

Preston | 20148 comments I am enraged that the Russian have stated that during the Olympics they will enforce their new laws about being gay or being a straight person advocating the rights of their LGBT family, friends, co-wokers and neighbors or Olympians.

They are arresting people already having jailed a Dutch film crew for documenting the impact of the Putin-nazi new antigay laws.

Even straight people who sympathize with gays can be arrested.

Even gay athletes and spectators at the Olympics will be jailed for being born gay or for supporting a gay Olympian or any gay people individually or as a whole.

See this video from CNN for more depth on this development at:
http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/vid...

message 4998: by Boyd, Hunk of hunky burning passion (new)

Boyd (boydwalker) | 2304 comments I also am enraged about these laws that are not just for people practicing gay sex but just for being born gay even if celibate plus antigay laws for gays or straights even mentioning and subject of gay people in public or where children may hear it.

They have already quite violently arrested Russians for advocacy and/or being be gay.

See: this video from CNN of the arrests:
