Roger Kean | 17278 comments I'm all turned-up inside that someone has gone and nominated Gregory's Story as a candidate for Book of the Month for October in M/M Romance Group.

In fact I'm so bespattered, I'll damn well post the same thing under Author Promotions, so there!

Rick | 15794 comments I'll my hair out trying to get all my course work done and I can't find time to play with the "complain department gang."

This weekend: Read The Tamer Tamed; or, The Woman's Prize
Read The Conquistadors
Finish a presentation on the law banning headscarves in French schools
Finish a paper on pre-invasion Latin America
oh it just never ends.

Most author/bloggers rarely write more than 2 or 3 paragraphs in their blogs. Your blog covers much more than the ordinary and feels like a personal conversation with the reader since you don't hold anything back. And stories too.

Sadly it contains no strike outs complaints. >grin<

As a resident of the City of New York I can't help but complain about terrorism on this day—the 12th anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center with the loss of almost 3,000 lives. I keep thinking of the people who knew they had no way of escaping death but had time to call their wives, or husbands, girlfriends, or boyfriends to say their final goodbyes.

Monika | 2175 comments I'm upset and saddened that I watched this as it happened and still see it in my head like it was yesterday. This will be something that I'll never be able to forget.

message 5159: by Karl (new)

Karl | 174 comments It was one of those moments that remains with you forever- I also remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the planes crashed into the towers. I was at work in a hospital in Philadelphia when I saw a patient watching the TV with a shocked expression when I looked over and saw the towers burning. Everyone on the floor just stared transfixed as we couldn't comprehend the horror of what was unfolding...

message 5160: by Roger (new)

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I had just got back to our Thalamus Publishing office after lunch, walked in and there three editors were glued to a Mac screen. I was walking from home when the first plane went in but arrived a few minutes before the second. We did no more work that day… I'm sure few anywhere did, unless in Afghanistan in the AQ HQ.

message 5161: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments I went to work, but everyone was in such a daze I don't think we got much done. I do remember going back again and again to listen to the radio reports, it was just so, so unreal and frightening.

message 5162: by Eric (new)

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 386 comments I still remember my location when I heard of Kennedy's assassination: in a basement theatre in college, rehearsing a play called "The Royal Family." Ditto, 9-11. My partner and I had just moved into our new home, cable had just been hooked up to the new "big" screen (for that time), and though we were in the midst of lifting/hauling/unpacking/moving around, we flipped it on.

We were both in the room at that moment. Everything came to a standstill and except for necessities (potty breaks for us or the animals, food that could be eaten in front of the TV) we stayed there all day. And for the next couple of days very little "moving in" got done while we watched the aftermath unfold.

I hadn't really remembered all that until this thread started.

Let's hope never again.

Eric

Tj (bluesmokey) | 632 comments I was home (I'm "homemaker"). Saw the news after the first plane and thought I was watching a movie. Not long after I figured out it was real the second plane hit while I was watching. Then I talked to hubby who was on detail an hour away and no access to tv. I gave him and the guys with him updates on what I was seeing. It was scary and hard. Hubby was still on reserve status for the military so it was possibly he would go fight. He didn't which I'm grateful for, he was an MP and they have seen a lot of action in the fighting:(

Thanks Tj. Any word on whether or not you will be moving? I would hate to see you separated from your handsome son and glorious grandson.

message 5165: by Tj (new)

Tj (bluesmokey) | 632 comments Not at this time. Luckily for me Hubby's promotional packet, which is what they use for any transfers, isn't up to date and he is waiting to do that until some changes that take effect in February. So luckily no move right now but he is looking to still move north when he can. He is tired of dealing with what he must here, in attitudes and environment. So I have a stay;)

Boyd (boydwalker) | 2304 comments I'm angry that an Amazon Vice President made a statement in an interview to "We look at Goodreads as a customer experience problem."

I'm complaining because I don't know how Goodreads will change now that Amazon has built GR int9 the Kindle as a feature. Here is something from the Paperwhite Kindle ad on Amazon:

"Share with Friends on Goodreads
COMING SOON—Find your next favorite book. Now the world's largest e-reading community can connect with the world's largest community of book lovers. Join over 20 million other readers and see what your friends are reading, share highlights, and rate the books you read with Goodreads on Kindle."

Now that Goodreads is being built into Kindles I think the time has come to expect some changes.

I read an article that didn't sit well with me:

Peter Larsen, vice president of product management at Kindle, walked through the new Paperwhite.

[Goodreads integration] will probably show the synergy between social and shopping. Amazon bought Goodreads earlier this year, but today Goodreads lives in a separate place---a PC or a phone. With the new Kindle software, Goodreads reviews, recommendations, friends and followers are all integrated as you're reading. Larsen's walkthrough showed a deep integration that will be useful.
Amazon has integrated Goodreads as a top menu choice next to home and the shopping cart with a simple G. In other words, you can go from friend recommendation to review to purchase in a few seconds."

"We look at Goodreads as a customer experience problem to solve. People love Goodreads, but today it's in two different places," said Larsen. Goodreads continues to run independently like Zappos, but the integration makes reading much more social."

It's too soon to know if the changes will be beneficial or detrimental so I can't get too concerned right at the moment… but the future?

Preston | 20148 comments Here is part of an illustration from Boys of Disco City Boys of Disco City by Zack .

This is just a cut out of the top of a drawing in the book. I cannot show the bottom of the drawing because the Rules say pictures of guys who are naked below the waist can't be posted, but here's a hint: they're making love or at least lust.

Tomorrow Sept 16th is the LAST DAY for entries to our contest to win a softcover book of Boys of Disco City. See our Contest section on the Complaint Department homepage.

Eric Westfall (eawestfall) | 386 comments Great Lousy idea for a contest as far as I'm concerned. You carefully waited to do it until I'd already bought all four books. Though I can't read the last three yet (they're still in their virginal (cough, choke) shipping covers since AMZ didn't have the first one, and I had to buy it from a bookstore somewhere in the wilds of the Midwest. It's on its way to me via Turtle Shipping. >sigh<

Hilary Evans (hilevans83) | 121 comments Lol....that's a common occurrence around here. One of my friend's husbands just got promoted, and she only calls when she needs a babysitter or to borrow money. A group of random people I barely know and only met at one group dinner decided they don't like me for some reason and got bitchy on Facebook. And most everyone else I avoid if I can....but the main crap going on is one of the sailor's faults. My best friend's (and one of only friends) husband kicked her out of their house, cut off her access to their accounts, has been cheating on her, and she's five months pregnant with their second kid and on bed rest. It's been nuts around here. I need less drama and more sleep. :-/

Tj (bluesmokey) | 632 comments Waiting to see how the military will treat my brother in law. He had abrasion surgery for his uncontrollable heartbeat and flutter. Military doesn't always care for it's soldiers like it should. He is enlisted to retirement but they can still medically discharge him. We have to wait and see. I feel horrible for my sister having gone through this stress with her husband's health and now his job. He isn't very old either. Their kids have been reacting too. I guess I should be happy he is at one of the military's better hospitals. The military is very difficult!

Jennifer (desdinova) I need to complain about people who say something offensive and when you call them on it they turn on around and blame you. And when you try to be nice and offer an apology for offending them they accept it and don't offer an apology to you, the person who was truly offended in the first place! And that no one else is standing up and saying they were just as offended as me!

And to TJ, I hope your brother in law can get what he needs. My father and fiancee are both Veterans and the medical services they get are very shoddy.

Preston | 20148 comments Zack wrote: "I feel sorry for you, Gabbo… but then, I suppose, you asked for it!"

Yes Gabbo, Zack is right (because Zack is always right!)

After you read Zack's Boys of Vice City, Boys of Disco City, Boys of Two Cities, and Boys of the Fast Lane the long awaited fifth book might be ready for you since rumor has it Zack is working on it now.

Zack (aka Oliver Frey) has had his great output of fantastic artwork documented by a fellow by the name of Roger Kean who published The Fantasy Art Of Oliver Frey so you'll need that. After your buy these your collection will be missing a huge treasure if you don't order Zack the Art and the most amazing scifi full-color 50 page historic achievement in comics The Terminal Man and then complete your collection with Blood and Lust, Raw Recruits and The Warrior's Boy.

By this time your copies of the finest, sexiest gay comics ever produced: Bike Boy, Bike Boy Rides Again and Hot For Boys: The Sexy Adventures Of Rogue will be getting well worn from constant reading and you need to buy new copies.

We addict you. The first one is free then once you are hooked on Zack you must buy them all or go through a hellish withdrawal from the worldwide celebrated artist who has become a living legend!

We are so proud and honored that Zack is a member of the Complaint Department .

ps: Once again I remind everyone to take a look at this magnificent website: http://www.zack-art.com Ages 18 and over only please.

All I did was go searching for compact toilets to fit the soon-to-be-rebuilt utility range of my house. Now, wherever I go, even on Goodreads, all I see are advertisements for sodding chunder-boxes. Uh, lost in translation here.

This all has a scifi/fantasy sound to it, but it's beyond my comprehension.

Gregory's Story is an exciting historical adventure with a fast moving plot and the love story of two young men who grew up together but are of different cultures. They go from friends to lovers to life partners during a time when it was almost impossible to live as a gay couple, 1890 during the British Mahdist Wars in North Africa. There are many surprises and most definitely a happily every after.
