Odette (odettebs) I am blessed to have a great group of people that I work with who love to read. We have a "community" shelf in our office where we all donate books that we have bought and want to share. We have lots of different tastes, so we get exposed to lots of different genres. It's a great way to find something new to read!

Liriope Hmmm well I usually find an author I like and then work on reading all the books of their's that I can find. I also read authors who influenced them or were influenced by them.

The community shelf sounds neat though :D

We used to do that in our lunchroom when I was working at UBC; what a variety of books, and it was (usually) the quietest room in the building... except when we started talking about books. I'm now retired. But my reading isn't.

Jennifer Defoy | 21 comments Unless I have a review deadline to meet I just read whatever I pick out of my pile. I usually have multiple books going at a time.

message 5: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Jennifer, it's the same with me, although mostly I've had review books this month and I'm also reading on Pick-a-Shelf (this month's challenge was to read something of the philosophy shelf), a way of trying genres I wouldn't have thought of. But with all this going on I haven't had time to read any of my own books lately, having to go to the library for a book from the shelf pick!

Jennifer Defoy | 21 comments I've been lucky that most of the review books I've gotten recently have been ones that I've wanted to read, so it kind of worked out good for me. But I have a few that I almost quit reading because there was absolutely no redeeming quality to the book whatsoever.

message 7: by Betty (new)

Betty (nightreader) Having given it more thought, I think my reading pattern is determined by what book I have just finished. If my last was "heavy" reading, then I try to do something light next, if it was uplifting, I'll got to perhaps something forensic or a thriller... and so on. I try to switch genres although with review books sometimes I don't have that option, you never know when they are going to arrive and a couple of months ago I read 3 entirely different books taking place in the Amazon one after the other! This also happened with 3 war books in a row.

Shirley | 47 comments When I find a book I really love, I hate for it to end. I think that is why I like big books and series. That way they can go on and on... I try to mix genres and like Betty, if I've just read a heavy book I will try for something lighter for my next read. But I usually have books waiting to be read, so often, its the luck of the draw. I am really excited to see that Dan Brown's new book will be released in Sept. It has been a long wait.

Angie I know that's it's sort of commercial but I love getting the Amazon and Barnes and Noble newsletters. I've found a lot of cool books that way. Other ways I find books to read is WOM and of course people's recommendations from here (Good Reads). :) I think Betty you have a great thought about alternating the types of books to read. I'm going to put more thought into it that way. I tend to be rather implusive in my selections.

message 10: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia | 359 comments Depends on the mood I'm in. I have LOTS of books waiting to be read. I just hope I live long enough to finish them all...actually, there's no way. Probably everyone would agree with that thought.

message 11: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 47 comments I completely agree with Cecilia - I think it would take another whole lifetime to read all the books I want to read. And then you have the problem that the list would keep growing......So, I guess we'll just have to keep coming back for more!

message 12: by Dottie (new)

Dottie | 27 comments I have not method of picking the next book that I read. Sometimes books pass my way and I read those. Everyonce in awhile I come across a book that is traveling under the Bookcrossing web. Check it out.

message 13: by Angela (new)

Angela (asands) I like to read a contemporary and then read a classic. I find that there are so amny classics that I have not read that this is the best way to do it. I do find that I am getting so many ideas on new authors since I joined Goodreads that my list of 'to read' is getting completely out of control :D

I'm with you on that one - can't wait for the new Dan Brown book

message 15: by Chasidy (new)

Chasidy For me it's a gut feeling. It's actually a little weird. I browse through my pile looking at the cover and which ever book gives me that little zing in my tummy, is the book I read.

message 16: by Roberta (new)

Roberta (wwwgoodreadscomrooonuma) The G-Free Book, among other things.
