I'll just make sure I don't purchase them at Wal-Mart.

I must admit I will keep shopping at Walmart... I am not working now and need every penny I can save. Like I said before though it is only groceries I get there. I don't even know where a mom and pop store is here in Colorado Springs? Is Safeway, or King Soopers? No they are just as big. So I don't even know where to go to be honest! Restaurants are much easier to find mom and pops rather then chains.

Of course. I never said anyone should stop shopping there, just that they should be able to decide based on the information available. :)

Bonita (NMBonita) Yeah, it's a catch-22 but what are you gonna do? I'm tired of worrying about it. The problems with super stores are bigger than me.

Is anyone planning on purchasing the collectors Under the Dome? Do you think it would be worth the high price?

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments We've all gotten off on the Walmart "evil corporation" that we seem to have forgotten what brought them in on the thread in the first place: censorship. Someone mentioned that they were afraid to buy "Under the Dome" at Walmart for fear the book may have been censored by them in some way. Of all the evils mentioned in this entire discussion, that's what bothers me more than anything else. To take a work of art, whether it be book or CD, and have the audacity to "clean out the dirty bits" goes beyond ANY retailer's rights. If they feel that they have to censor something before they carry it, why carry the book or the CD in the first place? - and the answer is ding...ding....ding ---PROFIT, me loves, the lord god almighty PROFIT.

I have somewhat mixed feelings on the censorship aspect.

First of all, I hate censorship. I would never buy a book or movie or CD for myself that I knew was cut or censored. I rarely will watch a movie that is shown on non-cable television, as it has been "edited for content."

But that's just me.

My step-son just got the new Five Finger Death Punch cd. He already came by with the first one, and I listened to it. That's some awesome music. Anyway, he is 15 and gets the edited versions at Wal-Mart. Now, I know he would also prefer the uncut ones. But they aren't supposed to let him buy those. He loves the music and Wal-Mart provides him with an option where he can listen to it and enjoy it, without the worst of the cuss words.

In this case, parents can get him the cd without being torn on whether the language is appropriate or not. It will also reduce the amount of trouble he would get into if he took it to school and someone heard it.

With that said, the censored/clean versions of these things MUST be clearly labeled. I do not want to buy something that is not what I think it is. I am always very careful buying cd's at Wal-Mart for fear that I am getting the cut copy. If they are clearly marked and I as a consumer have the choice, I don't have a problem with them existing.

The artists and record companies still make money on the sale, so they are not screwed. As long as the consumer knows what they are getting, they're ok too.

message 158: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I agree with you Chris - I'm also against censorship as a general principle, but I think that people have a right to choose for themselves, as with everything.

I'm sure that you guys have all seen my rants (elsewhere) about the 4 copies of Count of Monte Cristo that I had to go through (by "go through" I mean bought, not read") before I found one that was unabridged.

B&N let me down, with their B&N Classics edition, which was abridged but didn't show anything on the cover or the back at all, and I didn't think to open the book and flip through all the intro pages to get to the title page of the book proper to see that it was indeed abridged. >:(

I won't buy CDs or movies there because of their censorship. Did you know Blockbuster Video's movies are edited?

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Angie - I most certainly did not!!! - Wow .... fortunately, I belong to Netflix, but I do realize that that's a luxury not everyone can afford. I wonder just how many other corporation censor books or music without informing their customers? I thought that only happened in Utah!!! (Please don't hit me, Utah readers!!!);-)

message 162: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I didn't know that either! O_O
We have Netflix too, but I rarely watch movies these days. Thomas is the TV/movie watcher here. :)

Back to Under the Dome... I have noticed a lot of people asking why it isn't our November read. The reason is because I think it comes out Nov. 11 so I wanted everyone to get a chance to get it.. and since we couldn't start the discussion Nov 1st I thought it would be better to read it in December... of course that's if it gets picked (I would be surprised if it's not picked).

I lived in Utah for a few years... my parents are still there. I felt a lot is censored there.. even the liquor!

message 166: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) A few years ago, I lived in a town in Virginia where the ONLY liquor store within 45 minutes of me opened at noon, closed at 6pm, and was closed on Sundays. Alcoholics really had to plan... there was no bar within 30 miles of winding country roads. They did sell beer in the grocery stores, but there was a limit of 1 six-pack per customer.

Imagine my shock after coming from a place where the liquor stores were either open 24 hours or closed at 2am, you could buy beer and liquor in grocery stores with no limit and you could walk into any convenience store and buy beer by the case.

Where I live now, in order to buy beer in anything other than a 40oz container, you have to go to an authorized beer distributor. Even six-packs! The liquor stores here close at 9pm, 10p during the holiday season. LOL

message 173: by Lonnie (new)

Lonnie Bondama, I think you are referencing my Walmartyred statement when you said someone was afraid to buy "Under the Dome" at Walmart for fear the book may have been censored by them in some way. Actually, I didn’t mean it in the form of true censorship as much as little things missing that would be included in a full priced version. Stuff like the overly hyped dust cover jacket or maybe an introduction. Something to make it cheaper, not censored. However, after I made that statement is when I discovered there was a price war going on. Now, I do not feel that this will be the case.
Becky, your liquor store comment hit home with me as well. I live in “The Wettest Dry County in America”. Okay, that is more of a joke than a fact but it sure seems true. We have to drive either to a different county (12 miles) or out of the state (9 miles) if we want to purchase alcohol to bring back to our homes. However, many, many restaurants serve alcohol. You can easily go out for pizza and get a pitcher of beer, a bottle of wine with your steak, or hard liquor w/ your Buffalo Wings, etc. I was surprised when I was traveling for business in your neck of the woods that I had to go into a PA owned and operated store to get a bottle of whisky. However, after my meeting I understood that it was state law and that’s just how it is. The other place that blew my mind was that I could not find any place in Milwaukee to get a beer after 10PM on a Sunday night when I was there. Milwaukee! Home of beer (well at least on Laverne and Shirley). I couldn’t believe it. I think I was told I could go to a bar and be served but I wanted to just have a drink while I watched the news and go to bed.
Someone else earlier (sorry, I don’t usually look at the boards much on the weekends) had mentioned Walmart and their shoplifting policies. That is one policy they have that I think needs looked into a little closer, in my opinion. I know a kid who was caught shoplifting and detained while they called the parents. The kid was banned from entering Walmart for two years unless he was within arms reach of his parents at all times. (I’m fine with that). However, while the terrified kid and ticked off parents were in the back room with Loss Prevention the parents were given the ultimatum; either we call the cops or you agree to pay $150 in restitution for loss of wages and security measures. (Something along those lines). Well of course, the parents had about 30 seconds to decide if they wanted their kid to have a criminal record or pay the $150, so they agreed to pay. Now, I don’t want to throw out the term extortion to loosely but…

message 174: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, that was me too Lonnie, regarding the loss prevention. The worst part is that I've heard stories that they get people to agree to their "negotiation" in order to avoid police involvement, and then report the people anyway.

Not that it's not within their right to report a theft, but if they're going to report it anyway, that's what they should do from the start, if this is true. I mean, they wouldn't have lost the merchandise, as they caught the person. It seems like, again if this is true, they think that they can keep the merchandise, make a couple bucks off of some unwitting person, and then prosecute them anyway. Win/win/win for WM, with no repercussions. What could the thief do in that situation?

I'm trying to be careful about saying that I don't know the truth behind that, because nobody I know personally has stolen anything from WM (or at least not been caught if they did), so I can't claim to know that for a fact.

...But I wouldn't put it past them either.

message 175: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments My husband works at Home Depot, in the back offices. Thier policy regarding theft is to never prosecute, they DO however, try to scare the pants off anyone they catch. Many times my husband will be called in to the LPS office to just stand againt the wall with his arms crossed. He's pretty big and can look scary, but I just can't imagine a company making an ultimatum like you desribed. That is completely horrid. I see no problem with putting a little fear in someone, but that? That's just waaaaaaay too much.

message 179: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments Me too. I'm glad he at least thinks of the smaller books stores. I remember when The Green Mile was released in serials, he was very angry with the price points and marketing. There were articles and interviews everywhere. He felt the public was being bamboozled into paying $24 ($3.99x6) for a book they would have been able to release all at once for about $15. (at the time) That's when he did his disastrous E-Book The Plant. It was a failed experiment, but I loved the idea of it!

message 180: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Boo (betsyboo) | 195 comments I have to say that if there were an indie bookstore in my area I would only purchase from them. Unfortunately, there are none unless you count the used bookstores. They've ALL been run out of business. Here's my take...once upon a time I was really poor. I loved SK, but I couldn't afford to buy his books in HC when they came out. So, I either waited for the paperback or told all my relatives that I wanted it for Christmas. I don't mean to sound judgemental here, but buying books from Wal-Mart or Target is something I would'nt do. They don't love books...they are purely in the biz to make a profit.

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Angie - you and Becky are both right -- I was so starved for some SK that I DID read the excerpt -- it's like giving one drop of wine to a raving alcoholic!!! --- it was NOT a good idea to publish the excerpt, I think -- All of his Constant Readers know the character types - the bad power-grabbing mayor, his son (with a TERRIBLE secret, etc.....) so I don't really think that ANYTHING was accomplished by the publication. I can't figure out why on earth SK would agree to do it. I'd love to ask him in one of our emails, but one of our "unwritten rules" is no truly personal questions, like "why in the world was the excerpt published?" So, if you get a chance - skip it!!
