Loved this book the first time I read it and I just bought it on my Nook for $1.99 and plan on reading again on that.

Brandy Thomas (brandythomas) | 5 comments So, went ahead & bought the Kindle version. Too good of a deal to pass up...and now I can read on the go without lugging around the paperback. :)

message 653: by Lee (new)

Lee Gunter (leegunter) It's been a while since I read this one, but I loved it and wanted to drop the endorsement into the appropriate place: here. I just finished one of the Bachman books and thought it was awful, so felt a need to swing over to the thread of a book I enjoyed and remark so. Anyone who enjoys King, or intriguing story concepts or good character development would probably enjoy 'Dome'. Just my 2 cents for the odd person who wanders in here unsure.

Stephen King and Steven Spielberg's adaptation of "Under the Dome" will premiere on CBS at 10 p.m. on Monday, June 24, the network announced Saturday...

April | 13 comments I just saw a preview for the movie...or a blurb. Do we really have to wait until June?

Joyce Oxfeld (jreadr) | 65 comments I saw that Under the Dome has a Movie on the way. I have a sample of the book on my Nook. I'm now thinking, should I or shouldn't I. Not all SK novels translate well to movies.

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1115 comments You should definitly read the book, its really very good.

message 660: by Liza (last edited Feb 11, 2013 11:55AM) (new)

Liza (lizamauldin) I agree with message 653 by Brandon that the ending was sub-par. I enjoyed the book until the end, feeling disappointed at the climax.

Ryan wrote: "I never really understood why the town was so scared of Big Jim...."

I see what you're saying about Big Jim. While reading, I took it as King relaying a real life bully personality type that's meant to grow into a villain in the confines of the Dome.

Big Jim ain't got $h!+ on The Walking Dude...

Benjamin Stahl (lukeneely) Angie wrote: "I find it strange King has not seen the Simpsons movie. "

It is strange, because King has often appeared on the show and I think he must be a fan. Not to mention he played in a band with Matt Groening

message 664: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Stahl (lukeneely) The concept of this story was very exciting, but when I finally read it, I found the whole thing much too long and lacking of any real sense of character. The only interesting characters were the evil ones, which us often the case King's not-so-impressive efforts.

message 665: by Bondama (last edited Feb 20, 2013 06:09AM) (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments I did not care for the novel - "Under the Dome" is a very pedestrian story, with none of the superb twists and turns and red herrings that King usually stuffs into his "big ones!"

Oh, and BTW, I'm sure that King has seen the Simpsons movie by now --- he didn't see it before because "Under the Dome" was published a few short weeks or months after the movie was released.

message 666: by Linda (new)

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1115 comments I really enjoyed under the dome, I thougt it was one of his better works.

message 667: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 6 comments I have to admit that I had a hard time finishing this book...and that NEVER happens to me when it comes to King's books. I've read, and re-read, most if not all of his novels...but this one lost me.

message 668: by Trent (new)

Trent (stephenkingaddiction) | 152 comments Just finished it started out fairly decent then towards the middle got slow but loved the back half of the book would give it a 3.7 overall or a B

message 669: by Squire (new)

Squire (srboone) | 92 comments A looong, but never boring book. I thought the resolution was disappointingly unimaginative for King; and I wish the two storylines had climaxed together, but a mroe than solid outing. In my top 20 Kings.

message 670: by Jason (new)

Jason Pereira Under the dome took over my life I am happy to say, it's the King novel that brought back my love for his writing. I know it may have been a bit far fetched, and made me remember the Simpsons Movie, but that wasn't the point of it all. I was lost in Chesters Mill from start to finish. I thought I would have a difficult time keeping track of all the characters considering it is one his more high numbered character books, but i didn't; each individual I thought was given their fair share of the lime light, even the dead ones. It made me hate and love small towns, which then made me look at mine with narrow eyes. lol

Kathy Geiser (kathygeiser) | 3 comments Really liked the book. Waiting for the TV preview. Always disappointed with them. Just so much that can't be transferred from the book, but still really want to see. Starts June 24, CBS.

message 672: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 7 comments As soon as I started reading, I knew I wouldn't be able to put this down, and I finished it in a few days. For me, it is among SK's best books, even if the ending wasn't as good as I was hoping for after so many pages.

This is one of those where he tones down the supernatural/strange to a certain extent and focuses on the personalities of so many interesting characters, almost to the point where the finale is irrelevant as you have enjoyed so many subplots along the way.

Kathy wrote: "Really liked the book. Waiting for the TV preview. Always disappointed with them. Just so much that can't be transferred from the book, but still really want to see. Starts June 24, CBS."

I agree. I can't wait for the show. I have prepared myself for it being different, like they usually are. I just don't want to be disappointed.

message 674: by Maura (new)

Maura Lorenz | 7 comments They are filming it here in Wilmington. I can't wait for it either, I absolutely loved the book!

message 675: by Ben (new)

Ben | 5 comments Has anybody noticed the reference to Jack Reacher within the book. It came up twice through the first 800 pages of the book and appears to be the same Army cop character that was played by Tom Cruise in the movie "Jack Reacher". Any one know anything further?

message 676: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 747 comments I remember the reference, too, Ben. Wonder if there is something to it or not.

message 677: by Bondama (last edited May 27, 2013 07:42AM) (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Kathryn - the "something to it" is an old habit of King's and quite a few other authors. Stephen King is a big fan of the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. He's just giving a "shout out" to a writer he likes.

When John D. McDonald was still alive, they took these shout outs to new levels -- In each new book by McDonald, a King book would figure in it. When a new King came out, John D. would be mentioned (or one of his characters)

message 678: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Not only that, but I believe that King read a lot of the Jack Reacher books while writing UTD.

So for me this is my first audio book. Today I was on a long road trip and listened to the audio for 9 hours. It's crazy but I haven't even put a dent in the number of disks that come with the audio. It comes with 30 disks and I am probably in the middle of disk 7.

I don't know what to think of audio books. For one thing... it sure did make the trip seem like it was only a couple hours rather then 9 hours!! Loved that. I did have to pay close attention though and listen. My mind wandered a couple times and I had to rewind the CD. Oh ... and I got pulled over. No I didn't get a ticket... I got pulled over going 74 in a 70... REALLY? I got a warning for that. Ummm... yea wow... so I had to pause the disk for that stupid incident. Back to the audio... I liked the narrator who is Raul Esparza . I did think when he tried to do a woman's voice it was kind of funny but what was he supposed to sound like... he is a man after all. He did really well with mixing a ton of characters voices but allowing us to be able to tell who is who. I mean Under the Dome has a TON of characters. I'll update again when I listen to more disks this weekend!!

message 680: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 293 comments I have that problem with audio books too Angie. My mind wanders, and I'm constantly having to rewind them. I do like them for long, tedious drives though.

message 681: by Donald (new)

Donald Scott (writeondon) I hate audio books; find my attention wavering the few times I tried one, and since childhood having someone else read to me has always made me sleepy - and I just can't focus like I can when reading myself. Am currently reading UTD (page 355 or so, I think), and cannot even IMAGINE trying it on audio - kudos to you, Angie! - but yeah, the couple of times I've tried an audio book, I found myself getting distracted, and having to back things up and listen again to fully grasp what I was hearing. No, thanks.

Regarding UTD itself, the more I read about the series the more I sort of dread it; even with King's permission, to change the ending in the hopes of continuing the series more than the 13 episodes, if it's a hit, is WRONG - and that's just one of a ton of changes they've made to story, character, etc. Heck, just read online, this morning, that the miniseries opens with Barbie burying a body in the woods, then getting stuck by the Dome before he has a chance to get out of town (!) - and that is NOT the Barbie I am reading about in the novel!! Insane!

message 682: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 36 comments Bondama wrote: "now this is one I KNOW King agreed with -- they changed the ending. King has received quite a bit of negative criticism about the "aliens" - and this miniseries gave him a second chance -- Let's hope he came up with a better one than that in the book! "

its there one thing that could improve this book, and a few others of kings, is by letting someone else do the ending or come up with a better one himself.

off the top of my head i much preferred the endings to The Mist and The Shining in movie format than what king wrote in the books.

message 683: by Novia (new)

Novia (novroz) | 76 comments @Bondama They change the ending? COOL. I really like Under The Dome, except for the ending

message 684: by Novia (new)

Pickle | 36 comments novia wrote: "@Pickle I dont mind they changed The Mist...But I really like the shining as the book more...even the ending"

i thought the ending in The Shining book was actually silly... a massive let down after a good book but i generally feel that about King. Dont get me wrong i love his books and get absorbed in the story but really don't like some of his endings. (It, UtD, The Stand, Shining and a few others)

They changed more than three things; in the series (it's not a mini-series; quite the contrary, if ratings are good CBS wants to extend to a second season - and extend the time the dome covers Chester's Mill - for more episodes; this is just a shorter season, like you see on cable), episode one now opens with Barbie burying the evidence (a body) after committing murder, and have made Julia Shumway's character a combo of Julia and (I think) Linda from the novel. Also the timeframe the dome covers the town is longer in the series, and in the series you cannot hear, through the dome, what's going on/being said on the other side. There are other things, but those come to mind right off.

Oh, and as someone who is just over page 400 of the novel, I would have truly appreciated a spoiler alert before you gave away the novel's ending. Thanks, loads.

Chris Freeman (chrisfreeman) | 30 comments Has anyone else seen this page from the CBS website?

http://www.cbs.com/shows/under-the-do...

It's a list of bios of the characters in the upcoming show. I'm one that usually just rolls with the changes in tv/film adaptions of King's work but, in reading these bios, I'm dismayed. Did you know that Junior stayed in Chester's Mill despite a college football scholarship because he couldn't stand to leave the love of his life, his high school sweetheart Angie? And that Big Jim is the only elected official left in Chesters Mill? Seriously. Read them all. I think there was something wrong in every single bio. Except the one about the character that wasn't even in the book.

message 689: by Squire (new)

Squire (srboone) | 92 comments One aspect of King that I've always admired is his willingness to explore new media and adapt his works to fit them. He has always been on the forefront of technology and wishes to move away from the printed book format whenever he can. He says that mass printed material is here to stay for a long while yet because the big publishing companies have too much invested in it and are unwilling to move quickly in new directions.

I JUST read this same page, and was about to get on here and post about it when I saw yours; I will so NOT be watching the series now, the characters are so far removed from the novel, it'd be too disheartening to watch. I just saw this on FB, under the "Under the Dome" page, and even commented there that CBS truly screwed things up; if the source material was good enough to make into a freaking SERIES, why change so darn much of it - especially the characters themselves, because lovers of fiction read fiction BECAUSE THEY CARE FOR THE CHARACTERS?!? ARGH, am so mad at those morons!

Finally finished this.... I listened to the audio for 30 hours! There were four more to go when I finished my road trip so I just read the rest. Looking through this thread and reading everything I am so glad that now goodreads allows up to mark a spoiler with html. What a mess for people trying to avoid spoilers before this was allowed.

So here we go..
(view spoiler)

going to check out the bio page for the Under the Dome show now!

message 699: by Donald (new)

Donald Scott (writeondon) SERIES: Dale Barbara's character starts off the series burying a body of a man he supposedly killed, then getting in his car with his gun and trying to haul it out of town but misses when the dome comes down. NOVEL: There is no murder, Barbie is set up as the hero of the show, and he doesn't even have a car or own a gun.

SERIES: Linda and the female cop character from the novel have been combined into one person, a lady cop whose boyfriend Rusty is a firefighter trapped on the other side of the dome. NOVEL - Linda is a sort of volunteer deputy married to medical assistant Rusty, who becomes the best medical expert in town pretty quickly. They have two little girls. Linda is friends with the female deputy, whom she works with.

SERIES: Junior Rennie and Angie are hot and heavy in bed, but Angie wants nothing to do with Junior long-term. Junior, not well mentally, ends up taking her hostage and tucking her away for himself. NOVEL: Angie is only in the very beginning of the book, as something "happens" to her (no spoilers here), you only see her and Junior together very briefly.

SERIES: Phil Bushey is the DJ of the only radio station in Chester's Mill, a rock station. He's good-looking and seems very cool. Dodee is his gofer/assistant at the station. NOVEL: Phil Bushey is an emaciated, completely wasted drug maker/dealer who maintains the only radio station in Chester's Mill, which is an all-religious station that plays heavily into the story. Dodee, like Angie (and for the same reason as Angie), is not in the book very much past the opening chapters, and never worked at the radio station.

SERIES: You cannot hear anyone or anything through the dome, so no one can communicate from either side with the other. NOVEL: There is no problem hearing through the dome.

SERIES: Julia Shumway has a missing husband (or so I've read). NOVEL: She is single.

SERIES: Joe McAlister is a tall, gangly kid of about 15-16 or so, and Angie's brother. NOVEL: Joe is a very tall, gangly 13-year-old kid, very smart for his age, and is not related to Angie AT ALL.

SERIES: Big Jim Rennie is a stocky guy, good-looking and charismatic. NOVEL: Big Jim Rennie is a very overweight, out of shape reptile who holds many, many people in town in check with his power and temper.

Just the initial differences that come to mind, and why I am not watching the series.

Kathy Geiser (kathygeiser) | 3 comments After the first episode of Under the Dome, it is very obvious that the mini series had been twisted all around. This always happens with SK novels. I always like to read a book before the movie but with his I may change my MO. Maybe I would enjoy the movie more this way. I really like that Barber was a hero with honor and above normal sense of morality in the novel. Then in the first scene in the movie he is burying a body. I have loved other king movie adaptions that where totally different from the novels. I just think of them as two separate entities and not really even connected. I still have high hopes for the mini series. Guess we'll see.
