I've been thinking of getting this book for ages, but its had mixed reviews and I don't know anyone who has read it, so I am wondering... is it worth buying?

I really liked it, but it really depends on what you like.

yes, however, its kinda mind boggling...
NO!! It sucked! Yes it's worth reading if you are stranded on an island with nothing better to do, but in that case you might want to use it for fire.

OMG hell yes it is! It's one of my favorite reads of all time! You have to at least have to give the first book a try!
Don't give it a try it's stupid as hell. Plus the main male role, the (supposedly) bad ass Noah shaw, was anything but enjoyable to read.

Can somebody list reasons why it was good/bad? I'm curious as well, but if you don't say what you liked/didn't like about it its hard to use your opinion to make a decision.
In my opinion it was disappointing. The biggest reason for me being that it starts out good but then the romance takes over. And I didn't like the love interest (Noah) at all, he's like some cliche horrific bad romanticized parody of Draco Malfoy. There's also the cliche blond mean girl that hates the heroine. Also, the book doesn't seem to know what genre it wants to be, and fails at combining them. It does have it's moments though, so I'd just say read it if there's nothing else. I hate to sound overly critical but that's how I feel =/
Definitly, but the second is way better than the first. So if you don't like the first, it gets way better, but the first is still pretty good.
All I can say is I'm glad I didn't read many reviews before reading the book because otherwise I probably wouldn't have given it a chance, and that would be a shame. The biggest complaints everyone seems to have are about the romance side taking over the story but I didn't have a problem with that, I thought the romance stuff tied in really well with all the creepy stuff and it opened up new questions about the accident and about what's happening to Mara. If you watch the book trailers (especially the one for evolution) it's pretty obvious there is a romance aspect to the story so it seems weird that people have a problem with Mara having a love interest (especially one as incredibly sexy and completely perfect as Noah). I loved it and it's now one of my favourite series, it just depends what you like I guess.
Is the romance as prominent as it is in Fallen? That's another book I can think of that tried to mix romance in with a paranormal story, but the romance took over the whole thing.

worth reading? this is another best series I've ever read. :P I'm so not reading reviews again. Had i not read this book couple of days ago, I would never have got that pleasure. :D
This book was AMAZING you must read it!!

I enjoyed this book and will begin reading the sequel very soon.

I liked it because the whole book kept me guessing. One of the few books I picked up and just couldn't put back down because I couldn't figure out what was happening to Mara (is she crazy or sane). Same with Evolution. I read them both in 2 days.

YES. It's the best trilogy EVER. It's so catchy, i started to read it like 1 week ago and now i'm ending the 2nd book. The best of all is that you don't know what is real and what is not. In some chapters i thought that i would pee in my pants. It's sort of mistery, romance, paranormal, funny, it's so ASDFGHJKL.It's so recommendable. (:
P.S.: Some paragraphs are so confusing that you have to read them two or three times.

I didn't like it at all. I got half way through, and had to put it away. I didn't like any of the characters, and hated Noah.

I tried. :( I had that on my kindle forever to read, but I just couldn't get into it. I do love psych ward type novels, but I just couldn't get into this one.

Defiantly read it you wont regret it. You will fall in love with the characters.

I loved it. If you read Fantasy you'll like this book. I can't wait to read the 2nd book. :)

Look there is always that element of risk when you pick up a YA. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is catered towards teenagers so we shouldn't be expecting something like the next Jane Eyre. Nevertheless the story is interesting and the mystery is definitely worth the read. The romance does play a prominent role, but it was all good stuff :)

It depends on what you like, personally this is one of my favorite books along with the sequel! I thought they were AMAZING and I couldn't put them down!
You should read it. I thought it was really good, but the pacing of the last part was what threw most people off. It was so many things happening so quickly that it was difficult to follow through. If the author had slowed down and explained more towards the end, the book would have been a 4 star(at least) for many people.
I wouldn't buy it. Not until you've read it, and decided for yourself. It's mysterious, and can be quite confusing at times. There's romance and it's a tiny bit of a thriller, too. The paranormal aspect is very toned down, and the second book is kind of creepy, but you don't know if you don't try.
