I liked Balin the best. He was the only one to believe in Bilbo and kind of acted like a bodyguard for the poor little hobbit.

Angie, is Gandoloph's character pretty similar to his character in LOTR? I can't really remember... it seems like yes, but then it's two very different issues he's faced with.
I really like Bard, because he both reminds me of the nobility of greater races of men but at the same time comes from a humbler background. I also like Gandalf - in answer to your question, Ann, he is similar but you can see differences in the character between the two. He struck me as a little more of a sort of humorous token in the Hobbit, whereas he has more of the weight of the world on his shoulders in LOTR. He has a habit of showing up to save the day in both, but he's more of a constant guide in LOTR.
Good points, Judith. In that sense, I suppose Gandalf is rather representative of the two stories... since, in LOTR the issues really do effect the whole land, it makes sense Gandalf would feel that weight and responsibility more...
I liked Bilbo the best! He seems much more brave than all the dwarves. I also liked Beorn, though!

I think Smaug is a great literary dragon.
The brown Wizard! They even did a good job portraying him in the movie.
Bilbo because I love the laid back and easy going personalities of hobbits and Radagast (He's just awesome especially in the movies as well as the book.)
I like Gandolph because he is so so so amazing
I always loved Gandalf. but strangely enough, I've always had a soft spot for Gollum...... lol
My all-time favorite is Smaug. I've always loved dragons.
