How do I do things on Goodreads?
Okay...I think that I am having a blond moment. For some reason I cannot figure out how to put in the challenge the books I have read and have it count toward the tally bar listed. I am new to this site and a little confuzzled. Would anyone be able to tell me how to do this?
Nicole, once you mark the book as read, it should automatically count. The trick, though, is that you first have to mark it as "Currently Reading" then "Read" (either by changing the tag or clicking the "I'm finished" button when you update your status). If you've already marked a book as "Read," then you can go to that shelf and click "Edit." Then you'll need to update "Date I finished this book" to a date in 2013 for it to count.
Hope that helps!

I had to delete the book, mark it as Currently Reading, and then mark it as Finished.
At first I thought there was a delay, but it simply never took, and I made certain I'd put in the correct date. My guess is that it was a glitch.
I'm confused......bold, italicize, underline or strikeout text?
For each of these, replace the []s with <>s
Bold: text
Italicize: text
Underline: text
Strikeout: [s]text[/s]
If I am replacing the []s with <>s, why even have the []? I know I must be translating this incorrectly :)
Melissa, the [] are there just to show you where you need to put the <> because if you use the <>, it won't show you the code, it'll just show you your text with whatever effect is in the <>in other words, I'll type out the bold example for you using both ways. first with the [] that you'd need to replace with the <>
you can either see text and
then the words using the <>
or text

Thank you so much! I got it :)
We will very shortly be changing the name of this group to 2013/2014 Reading Challenge and start opening folders, etc. for everyone to set up for 2014. On January 1st, we'll drop the 2013 and be just the 2014 Reading Challenge.:)

You can click "add book/author" above the comment box and search for the book you would like to add:
I have a message with members names and the page where hey are listing individual challenges. How do I hyperlink each name so that by clicking on it, I will be taken to that individual page. I know it has to do with the words some HTML but don't know what to do with this information.
Nancy, you'll need the link to the member's page which you can find in the address bar of your browser. Copy it. Then paste it like this:[a href="PASTE LINK HERE"]Text You Want to Display[/a]
But you'll need to replace the []s with <>s.
This may be silly but I have looked all over where to set my reading goal for 2014 and I don't see anywhere to do that! Please help! :)
I'm just putting everyone into their personal challenge sections. Depending on your goal you would add a topic under "2014 Personal Challenge" 1-50 or 51-100 or 101+. If you are doing 50 or less let me know so I can add it for you.
I think that's what she meant Jackie! Haha (: I forgot they always wait like until the morning to put it up or something.
They must be new (:It's the same thing when you add a book at midnight or close to it. It'll register as being read the day before.
How do I see the list of books/book covers of books read in 2013 for the 2013 challenge?
Hi Jen, the easiest way is to click on "My Books" (the top, horizontal menu), then "stats" (on the top, right-hand side of the screen), then next to "2013," you can click "details" to see the bookcovers or "view books from 2013" to see the list. You can also click here to go straight to yours.
Do you know how to make a check mark? I saw it once on another group site and don't remember where I found it. I thought it would be a nice way to check off books I read in my lists. Happy NEW YEAR!!!

Above the comment box on the right side is a link that says add book/author, click on it. A box pops up. On the lower left side of the box are two choices: add link or add cover. Click on add cover. In the search box, search for your book and click add.

Thanks! Is there a way to get a pic to share of that, like a jpg or a linkable to goodreads, etc.?
Thanks! Is there a way to get a pic to share of that, like a jpg or a linkable to goodreads, etc.?
Jen, I don't believe so but will double check when I get in front of a computer. There's a workaround, though. Take a screenshot, load it to a picture hosting site (or your goodreads profile), then turn the picture into a link with HTML. (If you don't need the JPEG to be a link, skip the last step.)
There's an easier way! There's a widget. Go here and scroll to "Grid Widget": https://www.goodreads.com/user/edit?f...Select Shelf: ideally, you have a shelf for the books you read in 2013; if you don't, you may need to create one
Select sort: Your preference here
Select number of books: put the number of books you read in 2013
Is it better to access the site and group thru the actual full site? I'm guessing some things are not available in the mobile app?
That's correct, Amanda. The mobile app isn't perfect. You can't delete or edit posts and see comments on polls or lists. I think those are the two biggest differences. I'm probably about 50/50 between the app and the site.
Is there anyplace to keep a "subscription" to our posts? On our own home page it will show recent posts but is there a way to get to our member corner easily on our home page? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!
Kara wrote: "That's a great question, Melissa, and unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to do that."Thanks for responding Kara :) Too bad :(

In my Member Corner, I have links that take me directly to my challenges, too. I hope this helps.
P.S. If this is not clear, let me know and I'll post a step-by-step instruction.
Hi, I was wondering how to make stars...or is it something that just gets copied and pasted? Thanks :)

GROUPS
...stop getting notifications for EVERY new post in a group?
Under “my account” (click here), go to the “emails” tab. Near the bottom, you should be able to see a list of all of your groups under “Group Email Preferences. Click “none.” See the next topic to choose to receive individual topics.
...choose to get notifications for certain threads?
On a thread you would like to follow, click the “email me when people comment” link at the bottom of the page above the place you would add your own comment.
You will now receive emails when people post. To just receive notifications, click “edit” after “You are following this discussion (instant)” and choose “Notification Only.” To turn off notifications altogether, choose “None.”
...invite a friend to join a group?
On the group homepage, click the “invite people” link.
On the “friends” tab, select the people you would like to invite.
...remove myself from a group?
On the group homepage, click “Edit” next to “You are a member” under the group description.
POSTING
...add a book or author to my post?
Above the post, click “add book/author.”
Type in the book’s title (the search only works for full words) or author’s name (the search works first name last name and will not search if you just put in the author’s last name). Tip: An easier way to add an author is to use the “book” tab and type in one of the author’s books, clicking “search,” then moving over to the author tab.
...delete a post?
At the bottom of the post you would like to delete, click “delete.” Please note that it’s considered bad form to delete a post that someone has responded to.
...bold, italicize, underline or strikeout text?
For each of these, replace the []s with <>s
Bold: text
Italicize: text
Underline: text
Strikeout: [s]text[/s]
...mark spoilers?
Same as above, except use
text
and replace []s with <>s.
...add an image?
, replacing []s with <>s
To get a link name:
If the image is hosted online, right-click the image you would like to use, and copy the image location (this is slightly different for each browser)
If the image is not hosted online, you will need to use some kind of image hosting website (like imageshack) or you can upload it to your goodreads profile, and then use the image link.
FRIENDS/BLOCKING
...add someone as a friend?
Go to their profile, and click "add as friend" button under their details box. You can choose to just follow their reviews until they accept your friendship. Note: Friendship is a two-way thing where both members can see each other's posts. Following is a one-way thing where you can see theirs, but yours will not pop up on their feed.
...remove someone as a friend?
Click here to see your friends list. Click "edit friends." If you uncheck the box next to a friend's name, you will no longer be friends.
...block a user?
At the very, very bottom of a user's profile, you will see a light grey note that reads, "block this member (?)" Click that.
...report behavior that goes against Goodreads Terms of Service (TOS)?
Every post has a "flag *" link you can click, and this function is also available for messages you receive. You can also contact Goodreads directly at support@goodreads.com. If you're flagging a message, do not delete the message before Goodreads staff can review it.
