Jenni | 39 comments my book is not yet finished, I have written and published factual books but am aiming for a fiction.
I am trying to write 2 chapters a month, sometimes the story goes off the rails a bit , never know whether to just discard the bits I'm not sure about or save them somewhere. What do you do?

Carole Gill | 2 comments I write darkest gothic horror with some romance.

Here's a recent quote about my writing:

"In the attempt to find the just measure of horror and terror, I came upon the writing of Carole Gill whose work revealed a whole new dimension to me. The figure of the gothic child was there. Stoker's horror was there. Along with the romance! At the heart of her writing one stumbles upon a genuine search for that darkness we lost with the loss of Stoker."

I am writing the four-novel series The Blackstone Vampires

Book 1 The House on Blackstone Moor is on sale.

Jenni | 39 comments Before you publish who reads your manuscript? How many people would you recommend comment on it before publishing?

message 6: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Torbeck | 42 comments Mod
Me personally, I let the story tell itself. Every writer is going to be different, though. If I stick to an outline and don't allow myself to deviate from it, I end up with something I'm not happy with. Some authors change their outline as they go along to match the story, some-myself included-just let the story unfold as I go along. But I'd be interested in hearing what other authors have to suggest!

Carole Gill | 2 comments I think this whole publishing thing is a learning game!
I love being indie. You know where you are all the time. Being with an unsatisfactory publisher is awful and I am glad to be free and in control.

Ashley, I just tweet (selectively and not too many)
i do believe firmly in blogging and in making posts as interesting as possible.
as for any serious marketing--i just try stuff and see if anything works!

thanks for the invite!

Determining what works best for your life is a bit trifling. You have to learn to compromise. I gave up television in 2012 and still in 2013. I allow myself a specific time to catch up on my fav's via hulu and netflix, but only after I get my writing goals completed. Maybe getting up an hour earlier or staying up an hour later just to write is more your thing. If you feel good about 2 chapters a month...don't let others goals misdirect your own. Find what works best for you. Cheers! Michala w/www.bitemybook.com

Michala Tyann (michalatyann) Jenni wrote: "Before you publish who reads your manuscript? How many people would you recommend comment on it before publishing?"

It's best to find two (or even 3) people who are close to you but honest enough to tell you whats good and bad about your story. Then take their critiques with a grain of salt. Sometimes they will say something that will improve your novel and other times you will shrug it off. If you can't find someone near you...find a network such as here and ask someone, maybe trade services. Others may charge. Cheers-Michala w/www.bitemybook.com

Lee Roberts | 3 comments Hi Everyone,
I've been writing for a long time just for fun but only recently published a trilogy of 3 novels about a latina accountant who practices Santeria. The stories are all funny paranormal mysteries with a touch of romance. My web site also has links to my books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble (www.loroberts.com). I'm currently writing a book about teenagers who solve mysteries. I like the writing part but I haven't been able to sell anything so I just give them away. Any ideas on how to get a book signing? I think I've been rejected by every store in North Carolina. Hard to get attention as an indie.

How far would you go for revenge? FREE promotion this weekend!

My new novel EXODUS: A REQUIEM FOR JACOB FORLORN is now available for the Kindle and is part of a FREE promotion this weekend 2/15 thru 2/17!

From the writer of the heartwarming and inspirational ebook "The Little Boy and the Sea", comes a dark and haunting novel for the Kindle and print with "Exodus: A Requiem for Jacob Forlorn".

A tale of love, lust, betrayal and vengeance. What happens when everything you've worked for and sacrificed for is suddenly taken away from you? What happens when the greatest love you've ever known isn't what it seems? What happens when your most loyal childhood friends and family pass away? What happens when one man takes a fateful journey between love and hate, light and darkness...Heaven and Hell?

Jacob Forlorn is a beleaguered everyman escaping from the shadows of a bitter and broken past to find his place in life when he meets Miranda, a beautiful and mysterious woman with a past of her own. Drawn by love at first sight, a whirlwind romance brimming with intense passion ensues, culminating in the birth of a beautiful child. But all is not well in paradise. Against the remains of a hidden past, something dark and deadly emerges, threatening to either warn Jacob or rob him of both his heart and his sanity. Jealousy, resentment and deception emerge, soon forming a deadly web of intrigue, lust and secrecy which all have repercussions far beyond anything he ever imagined.

As dark visions and nightmares haunt him repeatedly, Jacob soon begins to walk a very fine line between right and wrong, against a backdrop of misery and death that pushes him to the limits of his faith in God. Someone...or something is after him. The secrets of the past begin to destroy him both physically and spiritually, forcing him to make a dangerous choice.

Love. Lust. Betrayal. Vengeance. It all comes to an end and something has to give. The journey to Hell and back has now begun.

Exodus: A Requiem for Jacob Forlorn

I am working on an idea. I have found a person to write about who has been deceased for over 100 years. This story was a newpaper article from that time. I want to use basic facts of the person's life like date of birth. How do I cite my sources in a fiction book? Is it ok to write about someone who has passed?

I hope everyone is doing well, reaching out to one another, sharing, collaborating, the whole nine yards! I personally am planning to start reaching out to folks by the end of next week to get you on my blog. I'm also going to be hitting up bloggers very soon to schedule a new blog tour for late spring. Carla, was the problem with Twitter due to ratio's? Twitter has an anti spam ratio. So for instance once you follow 2000 followers it only allows you to follow more once your followers reach around 1950 or so. Then it tells you it's a no no or yes. However if you know this and it was a just another Twit mess up apologise for butting in.

Followed by the way :)

message 40: by Carla (new)

Carla Chadwick (ccwordplay) | 5 comments No problem, Ian. You're not butting in. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. :-)

I'm not really sure why they got upset. I think it's because I followed a lot of people each day over the course of several days. They banned the account, but told me they would reinstate it if I "changed my behavior." Ha! So I guess I did, because it's back up. Whatever.

Thanks for the follow. I followed you back. :-)

1-3 really good people who are honest, good at cutting out the "dead wood" & who care about you are great. OH - and if 1 of those is published and maybe has won an award or 2, even better, because they've proven their metal.

If you make it open season, you run the risk of wannabes dickering over commas rather than substance.

Once you're "finished" or mostly so, opening it up for some proofing help & comments from the peanut gallery can be very helpful.

Follow your bliss!

I'm always open to reading and helping out a bit. I tend to reply more towards the story specifics over sentence structure anyway. I can commit to 3 chapters and if the story holds my interest I would feel comfortable giving honest advice. If it doesnt' hold my interest I'm a firm believer my advice wouldn't help. LOL

Ella Quinn (ellaquinnauthor) | 9 comments Jenni wrote: "Before you publish who reads your manuscript? How many people would you recommend comment on it before publishing?"

I'd recommend having a critique group, or at the very least, 3-4 people to critique. After those revisions, I send it to 3-4 beta readers, then a content editor for the few chapter because that's where I have the most problems. Becuase I have an agent and a editor at a publishing house. If I was self-publishing, I'd have the whole MS reviewd by a content editor. I still send my MS to a copy editor.

IMO, if you're self-publishing and want to be taken seriously, you have to have editors review your books.

I heartily agree with Ella. I am an Indie author. When I complete my first draft of a novel, I send it to several beta readers. That results in a revision. Then I send that revision to another group of beta readers. When I believe it's as good as I can make it, I send it to a professional content and copy editor. If there are major changes, I send it back. Finally, there's the proofing group. I send it to several people for proofing.

I wouldn't completely discard anything until you're certain you're entirely finished. I've had stories grow out of themselves. Sometimes it's for the better, sometimes not, so it's good to be able to go back and recapture your previous work if necessary.
