Please keep all discussion and speculation to the events of Part 1.

No spoiler tags required. Though it would be highly appreciated if you Uncheck Add to my Update Feed to avoid accidentally spoiling this for your good read friends.

Please do not discuss events from later chapters. Referring back to events from a previous section/book is fine.

Liam Johnstone (hadaad) | 383 comments I'm trying so hard to remember all these characters. I don't remember Alucius at all.

Bill | 1596 comments He is the brother of the guy king Janus ordered Vaelin to kill in book 1. Vaelin trained him in sword fighting during the cumbraelin campaign. His father is Al Haestian(? On the spelling) who led the army against the alpiran empire. He was living with Vaelin's sister when he got back to the realm.

Haha. That's totally the first thing from my notes! Only my spelling was waaay different.

Woo Bill and his reread!

So the following are Notes from the whole section. If you're just starting you'll probably want to wait until you finish this part to read them. They are pretty scattered and I have no idea what chapters they are from.

Last Warning..

I don’t remember what happened to Frentis. Lyrna says she killed him, but obviously he’s not dead. It seem like Dovoka is now with him? I don’t remember how/why that happened. Did they escape the city together after the King was killed/fire?

Caenis appears to be going alone with Lyrna’s law change with regard to the Dark Arts, though neither he nor the practitioners appear to be happy about one another. It also seems like he’s about to tell her about the 7th order.

Apparently Caenis has the ability to force others to take action against their will. Scary.

It’s only by the end that I vaguely recall who Elusisus is now. I remember the part of Vaelin training him now that it’s brought up again. I guess he showed bravery in the end. I wonder if there will be a new POV in part 2 to replace him.

The reunion between Frentis and Vaelin is what I had hoped for. I’ll be curious to see what happens going forward, both between those two and when Lyrna gets to him. She seems set on vengeance.

Bill | 1596 comments So Lyrna threw the poisoned dagger into Frentis's side so she assumed she killed him before fleeing on fire. Frentis was actually just freed from Elvira ( woman controlling him) and killed her. He then went on to meet up with Dovoka and fleeing the city.

The reread helped so much. This is the first series that I have read/reread in order all at once in a long time. That being said I did it all in audio so my spelling will probably be brutal.

Bill | 1596 comments I'm glad the different groups have now come together as it should help wrap up some loose threads.

Sad fate for Alucius. He was one of the more interesting characters for me.

Is the assumption that Caenis was a member of the 7th order before joining the 6th? If so I wonder how young they recruit them since he joined the 6th around 10.

Ah OK. That sounds familiar now. It also makes some stuff later in the book a lot clearer. lol.

I think so. They all seem to have been embedded in other orders.

I wonder when the gift presents itself? Most series use puberty. Obviously not here if they recruited him at 10.

Or maybe they got lucky and he was already in the order and presented with a gift and then was recruited into the 7th?

That seems less likely though.

Robyn | 150 comments One thing that I was wondering about is why Vaelin was never inducted into the 7th Order. Is the Blood Song not the same thing as being Gifted? (I suspect there may have been an explanation in the last book that I have forgotten.)

Hmm. Good Question Robyn.

Tammy the story of Frentis is such a good one, I hope Brother Sollis and Vaelin will support him once they realize what happened to him. I was sorry of Alucius's demise he had a great storyline going. It was interesting to learn more of how you can achieve immortality by drinking the blood of the gifted. I suspect the seventh order knows this and protects them to stop the dark? I was glad Darnel died though!

Your comment made me think of the part in Blood Song I think it is after the test of the wild when Caenis asks Vaelin what really happened and he lies to him then says something like "if only I had told Caenis the truth how different things would have been."

Maybe nobody in the seventh order recognized Vaelin's gift and if he had told Caenis the truth Caanis would have helped bring him into the seventh.

So glad Darnel died. He never really worked for me as the bad guy. He was just such a tool.

Meanwhile I didn't really remember Darnel from the previous books, so I was sort of whatever on the whole thing. lol.

Interesting thought on the Blood Song and the 7th order. That would seem to make sense to me.

Mark | 482 comments read the first part, enjoyed it but it felt rushed, like wanted it over with.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I agree with most of the above comments. I'm glad I listened to the last book about a month ago because I still have a hard time remembering a few of the characters.
I started liking Lyrna towards the end of the last book, but I'm not too sure of her at this point. Sending (I don't remember the name) Valin's "girlfriend" away by royal decree is sketchy. Lyrna said it isn't because of jealousy, but whatever. And it seems like her view of the dark arts is to use as tools, without regard for the people. Anyway, I don't trust her.

David Sven (gorro) | 316 comments Just finished this part. It started off as a bit of a slog as I was trying to reconnect with the plot. It ended well.

I have mixed feelings about Vaelin without his blood song. He was probably overpowered as a character before.

I'm assuming Frentis "beloved" now has Vaelins blood song?

So the Volarians really see the realm as a source of dark blood for drinking. A bit like vampires that way

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Yeah. I can buy lack of trust of Lyrna.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Hmmm...yes she does have a blood song now but wow how did she get it, if it is indeed Vaelins. I agree that it made him overpowered, but I'm really missing him having it.

Oh I liked the part with the wolf and Frentis.

Liam Johnstone (hadaad) | 383 comments I'm just glad he got his sword-fighting mojo back. That was almost depressing.

Justine (justine_ao) I thought maybe one of the reasons Vaelin wasn't inducted into the seventh was because of his mothers objections...she and aspect Elera were close and maybe she just wanted to keep her sons gift hidden.

Not a bad theory.
