Tanya I am kind of curious to see what others thought of the ending. I am usually ok with an ending that leaves you hanging a bit, but not like this one. I found it ended with way to many unanswered questions. What do you think she decided in the end - to shoot Anna? Surrender? Something else?

Cheryl I'm not sure what she did. I don't think she surrendered. Not to the police. She knew that her life, as she knows it, is over. I think she definitely pulled the trigger again. Maybe she shot Anna. Maybe she shot herself. Maybe she shot Anna and then herself. I didn't find Julia to be a particularly stable or likeable character so I'm kind of leaning toward her ultimately using the gun on herself. And that could explain the lack of closure in the narrative.

Tanya I would tend to agree with you Cheryl. I didn't like the idea of that because, as unstable as she was, her son was there watching. It was such a sad ending, even without any real closure. I couldn't help but be disappointed.

Zardoz I'm actually wondering if she didn't shoot Anna and then herself. To be honest I didn't like this book very much.
She was to much of a victim for my taste.
Also, if she would have just given up Anna would go to jail as well. Her connection in all of this would not go unnoticed.

I totally agree. Anna definitely would've went to jail. This book was very disappointing. I am usually ok with an ending that leaves you hanging a little bit, but this was just too much.

Pat Harris Frankly, I thought the ending was a cop-out. The author couldn't decide how to end the book, so he used the cowardly "I'll leave it to the readers to decide". I'd rather an author step over that white line and make a commitment to the ending, even if it's a big pile of shite, rather that leaving the ending vacant like this book. There really wasn't an ending IMHO.

miteypen To be honest, by the time I got to the end of the book, I didn't really care how it ended.

Cheryl LOL! I know how you feel. You just wanted to yell, "Enough already!"

Rima Same here. I hated this book and the main character so much that I totaly don't care how it ends.

Andrea I listened to the audiobook while walking and I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes and muttered to myself with annoyance at the silliness of it all. Finally, today, I decided to skip forward. Oh man, what a useless end! I am glad some people here share my sentiments about this book. Waste of time, waste of money, waste of patience.

Cheryle Godden I have been enjoying the book, but unfortunately my puppy chewed the last few pages so don't know how it ends !

Your puppy did you a favor!

Shona Oh my goodness...just finished this book and was cursing incredibly loudly at the end - there was just no answer and it infuriated me. Sadly from a non-writers view it seemed like a cop out....sigh.....

I think she definitely shot herself.

Maria I am giving S.J. Watson major stink eye over the ending.
I feel like he didn't do his job.
This wasn't an "oh, how interesting and clever, I get to choose the ending!" feeling.
It was a "What the ...? How am I supposed to know? These people are all crazy! The last two chapters were a whiplash of unrealistic revelations. Get back here now and finish this!"

Yeah, Mr. Watson ... stink eye coming your way.

Bill Stephens The book is an easy book to read, so thankfully getting to page 402 is not time-consuming. That being said, many pages before that, one begins wondering how this will end, and I liked the setting of the end, and was ready to accept whatever ending was given, but this book's ending was puzzling, too puzzling, and I was left disappointed.
