How strange!! If I follow the link it shows as 96c US (which it then makes me go to amazon.com.au which is $1.30).... but Renee is also in Aus. I guess that goes to show they price things depending on the person, not just your location!

Kat | 1198 comments Hehe lol Karen, just for fun I decided to check too and you're right, though I checked the uk site too and it's free there.

Emily Question regarding the rules on poetry books.

I've got a few Ellen Hopkins books I planned to read. One example: Tricks. Her books are written in verse, but I can't find a specific word count. They're all over 500 pages though (Tricks is 627), so I know they meet the 160-page guideline.

Can I use them, even though I don't have a word count? I completely understand if I need to use them as half-point books instead of the usual full point for 500+ page books, but I want to make sure that they can be used at all before I try to claim anything.

Tricks has 77642 words so you're good lengthwise, but because of the word count it would go under 500 pgs. Cut-off for extra point is 125000 words.

I found word count on ARbookfinder and other works are there too.

Works for me! Thanks. I'm good with it not counting for extra points, as long as I can use it for something. :)

Didn't even think to check ARbookfinder. I'll check there for the others when I post. Thanks for your help.

Monica (nutz4reading) I am one of the co-captains on team Xena and I need to be able to update the spreadsheet but I only have view access. Who can I send my email to so I can have access to edit it.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments Hi Kelly I was wondering if I can use The One for the goal Read a book that starts with the letter T

message 65: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Yes, you don't need to ignore the, an or a.

message 66: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments Little help :)

Do you think this one would fit the makeover goal?

Disfigured: A Saudi Woman's Story of Triumph over Violence

message 67: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 1748 comments Another question from Team Varro.

What we consider the title of the book, his original one or the version for the edition read. This point is relevant for different language editions.

I'm assuming that if I read a book for example in Portuguese ( A Luz), the title would be considered beginning with A or L. Although originally the book begins with T or S (The Shining).

Did I make it clear what I want to check?

Definitely Lau

Juliana - we go with the version marked as read for everything else so I'd say it would be the same for title

message 70: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments So sorry, I know I saw this somewhere but can't seem to find the answer for it!

I'm going to start Changes by Jim Butcher this weekend and can't find the Kindle edition on here that corresponds with Amazon. The Kindle edition is listed as 449 pgs on GR (link above), Amazon has it listed as 554 pgs (here), the publisher site has it listed as 560 pgs (but I think that's because they are going by the paperback ed). Use the Amazon pg # right since that's the edition I'm reading? And if you are checking the books, how do I note to disregard the GR count since it is incorrect?

message 71: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16602 comments Mod
I'll look into it Cathy. If I can verify the page count I'll update goodreads. Give me about half an hour

message 72: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16602 comments Mod
Ok, I've updated the kindle edition of Changes to 554 pages as Amazon has it as "contains real page numbers" based on ISBN 0451463471

message 74: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Hi! Quick question. This book I'm reading is listed as 165 pages on Kindle. When I open it on my kindle it says 180 pages. But in the summary on Goodreads, someone wrote "NOTE: This is a short and sweet young adult romance, about 155 pages."

I just wanted to double check that the book would be accepted as being long enough, in spite of that line.

A Bite's Tale (A Furry Fable) by Veronica Blade

Thank you!

message 75: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16602 comments Mod
Strangely, amazon have it listed as 180 pages based on the print edition, but have that "note" in their description too!!
I think based on Amazon's page numbers you are ok and it will count

message 76: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments That's so weird. I was like why did someone go out of their way to write that........ But maybe it's just an across the board thing.

Ah well. Thanks very much, Karen!

message 77: by Teri-K (last edited Aug 08, 2015 07:44AM) (new)

Teri-K | 4 comments Hi. I notice several questions about book length here. It might help to know that according to GR, "The number of pages in a book is meant to include all content except for advertisements and preview chapters for other books."

So the page count on Amazon or some other site might be different than on GR, because "sneak peeks" and excerpts of other books aren't counted here but they are on Amazon. In general GR librarians try to use the actual book or the page numbers from WorldCat instead of Amazon. And they never use the e-book page count. If someone changes the page count they may find it changed back. (Not by me, just it could happen and now you know why.)

You can read more about it here if you're interested: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2...

So for this challenge the mods may need to decide which page count they want to refer to. Many challenges say if you read an e-book or listen to an audio then the most popular mmp, pb or hb will be used for page count instead. But that's up to the mods.

Off to finish my book with "asparagus" in the text... :)

In general we've used the page count for the edition that the person reads unless it's audio (for obvious reasons) or large print.

message 79: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments Would you think this would work for this: Read a book which has the main location (setting) as a bus, train, or other road based vehicle?

Kafka on the Shore

Wiki says this: "He befriends a truck driver named Hoshino, who takes him on as a passenger in his truck and soon becomes very attached to the old man."

message 80: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments We have a goal needing a book that has a title longer than 25 characters. Can we include the subtitle in the counted characters or is it just regular title only?

message 81: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (ladykatala) | 5020 comments Cait wrote: "We have a goal needing a book that has a title longer than 25 characters. Can we include the subtitle in the counted characters or is it just regular title only?"

You may include the subtitle if it's part of the title in Goodreads. (i.e. if you link to the book and it adds that subtitle as a part of it. like Slide: ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations(

It sounds like it's ok. Hard to make a judgement from that amount. We've been going off the statement that at least a few big scenes in the book should take place in the vehicle. So it should be an important part of the story.

message 84: by Emily (new)

Emily Kelsall (emilythebooknerd) | 1388 comments One of our goals for team Commodus is to read a book with a planet, sun, moon, or star on the cover. I was wondering if this book would work: The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Renee Ahdieh . Because the holes are star shaped?

message 85: by Emily (new)

Emily Kelsall (emilythebooknerd) | 1388 comments Actually, sorry mods, never mind on my question. Someone else on our team just finished a book that definitley works for the goal.

message 86: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Hello again! Another question, sorry.

For the goals that include reading a book on an Amazon lists. A lot of the lists include box sets. Could we read one of the books included in that box set and have that count?

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

On the goal: Read a book with a bike on the cover. Since bike is fairly generic, can any type of bike suffice (ex. motorbike)? Or are you looking specifically for a bicycle?

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9626 comments Teri-k wrote: "So how do we go about getting a goal removed?"

What do you mean? Why?

Ok found it :)
I though there was some mistake in spreadsheet.

You can use boon. There is thread in captains group where captains can request boon, and Gods will remove your goal.

message 93: by Monica (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) There's a captains group? I haven't been able to find it.

Our team has a question. We have this goal: Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Spiritual

Can we use any form of the word Spiritual (like Spirituality)?

message 95: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments For the goal "contains the phrase 'cut corners'" would "cutting corners" be okay or does it need to be exactly that tense?

message 99: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16602 comments Mod
It should be "predominantly" that colour, so generally yes more than half the cover

message 100: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 456 comments Hi Mods,

When you say "Remember, only books read in round 2 may be counted towards goals in round 2." what exactly does this mean?

I started a book last night, but won't have it finished until after Round 2 begins - does this mean my books doesn't qualify because I didn't start when Round 2 started?

You also say "Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.)"

So does that mean my book does count?

Thanks for clarifying!
