Karen (karenkkay) | 3 comments Hi, this book was a children's chapter fiction book, read between 1980 and 1984. It is about a group of families in wagons that are trying to get through a mountain pass before winter. They are attacked by Indians who scalp and kill all of the parents. The oldest of the children is about 14, who has to take care of all of the children, including a newborn sibling. They end up living in a cave. The baby dies. Another group of Indians show up, bury the adults and take the children to a nearby fort.

Unfortunately, I don't remember any of the cover art or the author's name.

Thank you for your help!!!

Karen (karenkkay) | 3 comments I read the book synopsis on google. The book I read had several families in it, Seven Alone had 1 family.

Amy (Other Amy) | 198 comments I am wondering if we are looking for the same book. (Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it either.) In the book I am thinking of, the POV is that of the oldest boy (about 14), and (view spoiler). The other chief detail I remember is that when they get to the fort, they try pemmican and the boy is the only one who likes it. (view spoiler) Also, he may have met Kit Carson at the fort, but I can't remember for sure. I know the parents die, but I don't remember how, and I don't remember the part about the baby. Is this the same book as the one you are looking for?

Karen (karenkkay) | 3 comments I don't think it is. The oldest child is a girl because she commented in the book it would have been easier with the baby if her mother would have survived as the mom was breast feeding still, and the girl didn't know what to do to get that to happen. I don't remember Kit Carson. The only thing I remember about the fort is that the commanding officer was a friend of her dad's.
