Do you know if the book may also have been a cartoon or TV show?
Did they dig for coal, goal, diamonds, something else?

I'm not honestly sure what they were digging for, and I am unaware of an associated cartoon.
(I know, there's not really much here to go on.)
Are there any human or animal characters - or just the miner-creatures?
Is this a picture book or a chapter book with a few illustrations?

MissLoveReadingBooks: Sadly, this book is about twenty to thirty years removed from the Goosebumps book you mentioned. The artwork doesn't look right either.
If I recall correctly, I'd say the artwork had a "watercolor" look to it.
I'm trying to source a children's book, with lots of purple-colored pages and illustrations, that takes place entirely underground. It's about a group of miner-creatures, one of whom may have been named "lumpy." I think one gets split off from the group, but I cannot be sure about this.
I read this around 1979-1982.
The book was likely British--not a variant on "The Wombles," though. It is possible, though less likely, that the book could be American.
This was, obviously, a paper-book. I'm not sure if it had a stiff cover or not, and I'm not sure if it was a Little Golden book (I doubt it) or a Ladybird book (I doubt it). The illustrations strike my memory as looking like they'd been done via watercolors.
Oh, and I also remember "oof" and "bump" coming up frequently. Mining is tough business, even for adorable non-human characters.
