Since Merrain killed the guards, I'm not sure what that was about, but is she not wanting Locke and Jean to come back and be used as pawns. Is she the one who has hired people to kill them. Totally love the part where Locke realizes that he forgot the cats, it was like a "Oh shit" moment.
When Caldris dies from a heart attack I was thinking they are so screwed. Oh man my heart was beating hard when he died.
As I continue reading, I'm thinking they are not poisoned, just lead to believe they are, but I could be wrong.

I usually don't like seafaring bits in my reads but this had been really fun so far. Plus the educative bits really helped this landlubber too.
