Hello,

Has anyone found themselves enjoying a genre or writing style that they never thought they'd enjoy?

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 211 comments As a young adult I always loathed non-fiction. Which is weird, because I love to learn. But any time I tried to learn through reading non-fiction I found myself distracted, bored and even occasionally falling asleep. Then I discovered several non-fiction books that were told in story format and I fell in love! Non-fiction does not have to be boring! So why do so many authors make it so?

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Oh yes,LOL. Being a guy I never thought I would enjoy paranormal romance or any kind of romance books. Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries just really hooked me. Normally I am not into fiction much unless it is one of the great classics. Oliver Twist, Ben Hur, Typee,Jules Verne or Conan Doyale anything. Hemingway. Or historic fiction like Robert Graves,I Cluadivs. The 50'/60's beat writters like Thomas Wolfe,Hunter Thompson, William Burroughs, and scifi like Dune. Mostly I like history books, that are well written, and not just a recording of events. Julius Caesars Campaigns in Gaul, Wintson Churchills The River War, Dispatches by Michael Herr or My War Gone By Antony Lloyd which are history written in a very hip poetic style. Truth is a like anything that is well written & interesting. I have always like vampire storis since I read Carmilla. Which is a Romance actually. Old School Vampire I dig the most. : )

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Romance of any kind. I was one of those "I would never read a romance ever" snobs. Until my husband was on deployment and I was bored and lonely and wandering around the book aisle in KMart. A cover caught my eye, and then the book grabbed me and I've been hooked ever since even after divorcing the guy I was missing at the time. I started reading romances about 7 or 8 years ago.

Samm (ashmanrose) Contemporary... I didn't like mysteries, light romance, or most books set in "modern times" and then I found Jason F. Wright and have tried to branch out from there. I was surprised at how much I like the contemporary fiction that use actual events and base the stories off of there. I'm still not into the mysteries or books like Nicholas Sparks writes, but I've surprisingly found more books that I do like in contemporary than I ever would have dreamed of. I've even begun to read biographies of people who are actually still living.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 23 comments It used to be that I just could not get into biographies. I read everything else pretty much, but only within the last year or so have I found biographies that I read and enjoyed.

Nicky (raggamuffin) | 93 comments This is a tough one. I usually like things I never thought I would like...So I've learned to give lots of things a chance. But I can't really say it's very genre/author specific.

This makes it very easy (or hard, depending on how you look at it) to pick books... But has led to some great unexpected discoveries in the past!

Karen M I never thought I would enjoy steampunk but I've read two so far and they were good.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) The first romance book I ever read was: The Maid of Lorne (Harlequin Historical, #786) by Terri Brisbin .

I was hooked from the book's tag line of "wed or dead before midnight".

I absolutely despised Fantasy for a long time - then I found A Song Of Ice And Fire, The Wheel Of Time and His Dark Materials.

Great responses!

I must admit, I am surprised by the love for steampunk here! I am not very familiar with the genre, but what I have seen of it so far it is quite exciting.

Donna Galanti (donnagalanti) | 33 comments This is such a timely question for me! As an author, I lost my love of reading for a bit and felt like I had ADD as I couldn't concentrate on a book. Very bothersome indeed! However, I am thrilled to discover that it's because my tastes have vastly changed. I couldn't read the kind of books I used to read as they don't appeal to me now. I have fallen in love with non-fiction and YA completely like:
NonFiction Dispatches from the Edge A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival by Anderson Cooper
YA The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
YA Sparrow Road by Sheila O'Connor
