@Missy.

Very interesting...i for one am a "cover girl" and that is what grabs my eye. However the video sheds some valuable insight on covers and i for one would like to know if any exist portraying their true period of fashion. Very interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Missy | 1485 comments One of the comments on Facebook mentioned Lucinda Brant's book covers for her Roxton Family series were redesigned to be historically accurate.

Here's the author's blog where she shares that journey and a behind the scene video of the making of the new cover of Midnight Marriage. The ebook is free by the way!

Wow! This was so interesting. It seems to me that the marketers could definitely do a better job in keeping to the actual time periods without endangering sales.

@Missy...I saw that. I read the "before" and quite like the after. I've read quite a few books this year where the covers didn't appeal to me but the books were quite good. Thanks...going to check out the links you posted. 😊

I went to the theatre last night and saw The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Anne Bronte). (I had not read the book) It made think about society in the early half of the 1800's. I obviously read a lot of HR novels set in this era and I do love a book with a rake. In this book/play the effect of the ongoing boozing, hunting, gambling and misogyny are not pretty and I am wondering on my next read of a novel with an almost unredeemable rake I may think slightly differently. I have read that some consider 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' as the first feminist novel and I understand it was not well met at the time. I can certainly understand that.
Has anyone else read this novel?

Lauren | 1425 comments @missy, I hope you enjoy Persuasion. I've heard some bad reviews.

message 875: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments OK, I watched Persuasion last night and OMG, it was so embarrassingly awful! It is like they deliberately missed every one of Austen's messages on purpose.

Aside from the costumes and the settings (which are quite good), the script and dialogue are cringeworthy. Even excellent actors like Richard E. Grant and Dakota Johnson (who did the best she could with such a travesty) couldn't save it!

I am SO disappointed.

message 876: by Debby *BabyDee* (last edited Jul 16, 2022 11:40AM) (new)

Debby *BabyDee* | 812 comments Ditto Lauren..my sentiments exactly. It was awful and so disappointed that I search for the 1995 version that i totally enjoyed. You are right...Dakota Johnson and Richard E. Grant couldnt save it. Not sure of the direction but not a Jane Austen redo I would toot about.

So...So disappointed in this remake ☹️

message 877: by Missy (last edited Jul 16, 2022 11:49AM) (new)

Missy | 1485 comments I haven't read Persuasion so I was able to enjoy the Netflix adaptation. I have seen the other movie adaptations from 1995 and 2007. The Netflix adaptation was lacking in the romance department though. I didn't feel the angst/pining/resentment from Wentworth as much as I did from the other two adaptations but I didn't mind since I enjoyed this version of Anne Elliot and her breaking the 4th wall.

message 878: by Debby *BabyDee* (new)

Debby *BabyDee* | 812 comments I watch Persuasion last night and sooo disappointed and thought it was an awful adaption although Richard E Grant and Dakota Johnson did an good job with no saving. It was lacking for me in the romance and seemed a bit rushed through in places. On the surface ..okay but in depth..did not do it for me.

message 879: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 2701 comments Missy I'm glad you enjoyed, but I just couldn't get into it. I watched about the first 3/4 hour this morning and decided to give up and abandon it. Very disappointing. Way too modern but oddly at the same time had elements that seemed to be trying to be period appropriate. A strange mish-mash that wasn't working for me.

I didn't like the character of Anne (up to the point I watched anyway). She didn't feel much like the Anne I remember from the book. (It's a while since I read it tho.) OK for film makers to make changes of course, but if you change too much from the original, what's the point of using that material?

message 880: by Merry (last edited Jul 17, 2022 10:15AM) (new)

Merry (jewelhound) | 857 comments I have not read the book so I thought it would be fun to watch the movie. Well.....I watched abut 15 min and it was a bit jarring and didn't grab my interest. I may go back and try again. Seems to be trying for a Bridgerton type set.

message 881: by Lauren (last edited Jul 17, 2022 10:09AM) (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments Glad you were able to enjoy it, Missy.

There were some elements I enjoyed such as the diverse cast and the settings and wardrobe.

I agree, however, the romance that is such a huge part of the book and the other adaptations is totally missing. The chemistry and intensity that is so much a part of Anne and Frederick's relationship is lacking and Anne comes across as self-absorbed and immature rather than sweet and loving.

The scene that really encapsulated Anne and Frederick for me is (view spoiler)*sigh*

How exciting! Have a wonderful time!
Aside from London and the usual haunts, you should try to go to Bath (Jane Austen museum is lovely).

Are you also going to Scotland?

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments We have some lovely historical towns and lovely country villages. The north of England is a nice place to visit.
I could recommend some places, if you let me know where you are visiting, and what you are interested in.

Lauren | 1425 comments Topastro, if you go to Stonehenge just drive by. It's way overpriced and overcrowded. You can see the same view for free off the side of the road.

Personally, I've always wanted to see the the Isle Of Wright.

🐝 Shaz 🐝 | 1240 comments I agree with you Lauren. I took my sister when she came from Australia. It was a Total Rip-Off . Chatsworth and Kedleston Hall have both been used in TV and films, both in the Peak District Derbyshire.
Yorkshire Dales have some lovely villages Bronte county, Howarth, were the parsonage the Bronte grew up. Skipton, Halifax, Hebden Bridge, these are just a few that come to mind.

While reading some of these new books. I have to check I am reading a historical history story, as they tend to read like a modern story.
Also I find some of the covers can be mistaken for being a modern day book. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I completely agree. I've even written in a review or two or three that the book could easily have been set in contemporary times as there are virtually no historical elements aside from a date indicating the year 🧐

Hello all!

The voting form for the 2023 themes is available here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FA...

Please vote by Nov. 25

Since the nomination time for January is coming up too soon, we will be using the "overlooked heroine" theme for January. This is one that was a popular option when narrowing the themes last year and was not one we did in the last year.

I will post this in multiple threads so it catches more members.
