Nicholes | 2 comments I read this book in the late 90s that I need help finding.

The story started off with a male protagonist who lived in a present day city. Pretty early into the book he wanders into some building and witnesses some sort of ritual being performed by evil cultists. They transport him away to a different dimension or world. He then journeys through each world searching for each worlds single portal that would send him to another place hoping to find the portal that would lead him back home. In his travels he befriends a girl who has a mutation where she can extend and stretch her arm out really far. He also befriends some pirates.

Some point during the story he makes it back to his home world but finds out that a lot of time has gone by and that his parents have already passed away. Some little kid tells the protagonist that the people who lived in that home (his parents) were devastated when their son ran away from home. I don't think the protagonist has aged much or at all during his travels.

Near the end the protagonist teams up with a bunch of good people and try to stop the evil cultists from doing something bad. There was this weird feature in the last battle where each hero would be allowed to defeat a single villain without retaliation but if they were to defeat more than one the cultists would be able to fight back until the number was balanced back to the one person per. I remember something about the pirates fighting the cultists with their ship and taking out more than one per person breaking the rules so the cultists were allowed to fight back.

At the very end the heroes discover that they need to have one person become the new guardian of the portals to prevent the evil cultists from taking over again. The protagonist decides to become the guardian and stays behind. There's a bit where the mutant girl he befriends visits him every now and then and he sees how she is aging but he doesn't.

Thank you for reading. I've been trying to find this book for years so any help is appreciated.

Oh my gosh. You are fantastic. Thank you so much. That's the book I've been looking for. I should have asked this question months ago ^ ^
