M/M title help - clumsy professor - ebook

hello - I hope you can help as my google-fu is failing me.

the basics are this - there is a clumsy professor who works in a university/laboratory, he is really clumsy - but the new head of security makes it his job to look out for him. he has a cat called baby/lady who is looked after during the day by a mentally disabled girl. his mother tries to kill him when she gets out of prison. the local police keep trying to arrest the security guy.

it came with a sequel about them trying to adopt a child.

I thought it might be a kim dare/megan derr type of book but i´ve spent a week searching the store ie ARE, dreamspinner etc

any pointers would be appreciated as i have had a week of no luck.

its an older book - i think between 3-5 years. I think its usa based.
