Wren | 3 comments So I remember reading this young adult/middle-grade book in 2010.
It was in a series of possibly 4 or more (or maybe 3?) books and I think I read all of them.
The crux of it is about this boy was sent away from his natural world/Kingdom when he was born to make sure he would never read this magical book otherwise a dark prophecy would come true or something.

The first book begins with this teenage boy who thinks he is an orphan and is close to this wizard man (he might be an apprentice to him?). Anyway, one day he comes across these people offering a prize or something for people able to open/read this book/scroll/map...
The queue of people lining up to try is vey long but he manages to have a go himself and ends up succeeding.

Later on I think we find out that the wizard guy was actually his Father? He takes him back to a different magic world/Kingdom - the boy turns out to be a prince who was sent away by his mother and father due to a dark prophecy made when he was born which suggests he is a danger to the kingdom/magic world he belongs in. His mother and father who I think are the king and queen thought it would be best to exile him off out of the kingdom/magic world to save everyone from the prophecy coming true. He was never meant to set eyes on the magical book he read.
I remember that he has an icy relationship with his mother when he meets her against as she resents him and the Father for bringing him back. He also mistrusts his father for lying to him all these years.

The rest of the book(s) detail quests/unraveling the prophecy/ the boy coming to terms with who he is. In the last book everyone comes together to save the world or something when the situation is looking very dire.

I specifically remember a scene from one of the books where the boy watches a time loop of a little girl playing blocks happily - she has been under this spell for many years, he promises to the little girls (sister?, mother?) that he will stop the time loop and save her. Time travel may have been involved at some point or at least lots of magic. :)
