It's a YA/literary fiction/coming of age/family/dark romance/family/mystery/suspense/psychological/horror/thriller/multiracial/multilingual/multicultural/several intricate plot twists and so much more. I need someone to read and see if my novel holds interest and has a good hook.

Stephen Matthews (sdmn624) | 10 comments Hello,
I know there are a lot of people that are good editors. How does one really find a good one. I don't want continue to put out money for less than good work but I don't want to break the bank. I have joined this group in hopes to find one. There are many offers for certain prices but how does the one who is editing know that it is perfect when someone else can find their mistakes. Does the editor offer a refund/discount is there are over a certain amount of mistakes still found? Is there a level of errors that is acceptable? Is there a such thing a perfect editing? I know I have a lot of questions being a newbie but I just want to understand better and save myself some time and money. All information is helpful.

Thanks in advance.
Stephen

message 21: by Lea (new)

Lea (leagalanter) | 5 comments First you have to decide what kind of editor you need -- do you need a developmental editor or a copy editor (two different things)? After advertising for an editor with experience with your type of manuscript, and receiving a million responses, check out the editors' background via their resumes and website. Select a few who sound like they may fit with you. My next suggestion is to ask any prospective editor to provide a sample edit. This can vary from editor to editor, but normally it's no more than an hour's worth of work. I will copy edit three to five pages for an author so they can see how I edit, the types of comments and queries I make, and how I phrase those queries. (You want an editor who respects you as the author.) The editor also gets a chance to assess the writing level -- perhaps the editor can tell that the manuscript isn't quite ready for an editor. The author-editor relationship is important for both parties, and it is a true relationship; you really are producing a "baby"!

Hope this helps!
Lea

Stephen Matthews (sdmn624) | 10 comments Thank you to all who has responded. This is most helpful and needful now that I am on a track of trying to put out several projects. I am very new to this full process. I want quality work. If an average reader can pick up a book and spot an error immediately after spending thousands to edit, then what is the purpose?

Should I spend 1000 spread across ten people?
Should I spend the same 1000 spread across two different people?
Should I give it all to just one?

I am not writing a lot but still want the work to be good.
Thanks again to all.
Stephen

message 24: by HKelleyB (last edited Nov 09, 2015 12:52PM) (new)

HKelleyB (hkelleyb-editor) | 40 comments I believe every manuscript needs (in hire order):

1. beta readers
2. editor
3. proofreader

If I only had $1,000 to spend, I would use free beta readers, a paid editor, and a paid proofreader.

Proofreading is cheaper than editing; so, the bulk of your money should probably go to an experienced, professional editor.

message 25: by Lea (new)

Lea (leagalanter) | 5 comments I don't know anything about hiring (?) beta readers. Many authors I work with belong to a writing group, and the other authors in the writing group provide story feedback as the manuscript is written and grows. So there's no expense there except time. There's no replacement for a good editor. I'm a firm believer that the proofreader and the editor should be two separate people. One caution, though: a proofreader is NOT the editor and should only make obvious changes to incorrect spelling or formatting. The proofreader should always query the editor about anything else, including factual errors, commas, and other style changes. (I've been hearing recently where proofreaders are making wholesale -- and incorrect -- style changes to a manuscript, and the editor finds out only after the book is published.) One other possible expense when self-publishing is possibly hiring a e-book formatter/designer.

Hello Stephen,

I am an editor and my advice is similar to Lea. Whoever you choose, definitely get a sample before agreeing to work with them. The sample is usually very small but it tells you how the editor works and whether they will be a good fit for your work while at the same time they can tell you what type of edit you require.
I would also suggest getting a couple of samples done by different editors so you can compare.
There are plenty of free beta readers out there or, if willing, you can hire one but I can't recommend enough hiring a developmental editor. They can really help you streamline your work and a good one should be more than willing to discuss plot points, structure, characters, etc with you, ironing out any details. They are your silent partner, willing to help you but never take over. Are you confident of the different types of edits available because I do have a word doco which outlines the edits I do and explains how they work. Usually I send it to potential clients but feel free to PM me or send me an email on dontgrumblegiveawhistle@gmail.com and I'll send it to you as a reference. I can also help you out any time of you have any other questions about editing.
Thanks and good luck,
Katie-bree.

Stephen Matthews (sdmn624) | 10 comments Thanks to all who responded to my post. I know as an editor/proofreader it is not easy working with us writers :). I understand the relationship can also be rewarding. I want to be fair to the editor, myself and my pocket while producing great work.

I'm looking for an African-American female editor. (Not because I'm racist or something, but I would just feel comfortable given my subject matter is for African American women by and African American woman)

How long would it take you to review about 50 pages? Because I really want it done within a week so I can upload it by New years. I also have a second book which hopefully i can get done by next week (also about 50 pages)

Mimi Marten | 1 comments I found Helen on Goodreads. She offered me a free sampler and I was very happy with her corrections.
My manuscript required a thorough line-edit and she was very reasonably priced.
Helen worked on my 80K manuscript for four weeks. She did a thorough edit with many notes and corrections.
She provided me with additional editorial sheet and grammar sources. She also gave me her honest opinion and some valuable points.

Since you can see the dates on the track changes, you will be able to see how much and how often she worked on the manuscript, as well that she went through it twice.
I implemented most of her changes/corrections and I learned a lot. Her critique is very constructive, you’ll definitely improve your skills and hone your craft. What more can you ask for?
I was very happy with HKelleyB’s Editorial Services and I’ll definitely recommend it to my friends.
