Ruth | 682 comments Got this on Kindle.

Ruth | 682 comments So far this is an adventurous read. I'm interested in it's focus on the 7 tribes.

Wouldn't this festival be fun to attend!

Ruth | 682 comments Oops - just realized this is a teen saga, not usually my favorite, but I'll keep reading. Perhaps I should have known from the book cover.

Ruth | 682 comments This book reads a lot like a video game with spells cast, etc. The characters even imagine icons in their heads for different powers they want to use. Using their powers costs them strength. Sometimes I feel like I am watching my brother play his games rather than reading a book.

Having said that it is creative and I have enjoyed reading it. The name of the main tribe seems to be slightly modified version of an actual tribe. He also uses traditional Filipino villains which I hope to look do more research on.

The book definitely needs an editor. I am undecided whether the author speaks English as a 2nd language, or perhaps this is a Filipino vernacular?

The male/female pronouns are incorrent maybe 40% of the time. Also in/on and other small words are often mixed up. It could be confusing, but generally I am able to discern from the context who is speaking. It is distracting and draws some attention away from the story.

On the other hand - 2 thumbs up to anyone who writes a book in a 2nd language! I am enjoying the unpolished raw feeling of the emerging author reads much more than I had anticipated. I also feel that reading the unpolished versions helps me think of way that I could improve my writing. I notice that the emerging authors have a tendency to dive right into the action and could perhaps spend more time developing the characters and scene.

Ruth | 682 comments These are the names of the 7 actual ethnic tribes in the Philippine province of Bukidnon -- the Matigsalug, Tigwahanun, Higaunu, Umayamnun, Manobo, Bukidnon, and Talaandig.

I'm curious how much of the story is influenced by the legends or lives of these real tribes.
