Rebecca | 5 comments I've read a TON of PNR books and have gotten a little bored with the predictable plot lines. Don't get me wrong, I love a HEA, but after a while they all start to look the same. So I'm looking for an urban fantasy series with some romance, or something along those lines. I'm a big fan of Patricia Briggs, the Jane True series, the charley davidson series, and the dark fever series. I've read sherrilyn kenyon, black dagger brotherhood, ascension series, night huntress, merry gentry, sookie stackhouse, jane jameson, the Chicagoland vampire series, Pepper Martin, Cat and Bones, and many more only to eventually grow bored with them. I want something with some magic and romance that I can actually sink my teeth into. However, I'm not necessarily looking for the typical 'magical being who works in some type of law enforcement' bit, unless it's really good. ;) Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Rebecca | 5 comments Oh, I also loved Sabina Kane, Ilona Andrews Edge series, and have been recently (somewhat) entertained by Rebecca Zanetti.

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I cant recommend Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series enough. There is something about Kate that is just easy to read, but it has a great storyline, and never fails to keep me interested. I'm up to the 7th book, and desperately putting it off, until I have a safety book in the chamber, lol. You will love it, guaranteed. That's a big call, I know, but I would 100% guarantee it. :))

Rachel | 192 comments You might consider A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness . Definitely no "supernatural in law enforcement" in this series! I thought the first book in the trilogy was the best.

Sara | 1 comments Blood SlavesI love her characters and strong women and she has humor with it as well. N.L. Hoffmann has a different take on the paranormal world.

Nicola White | 23 comments I recently discovered the Southern Witch series and loved it. I can't remember which was number 1, but this cover is from the series and will put you on the right track. There is a love triangle in the series that is really well done - usually I'm not a fan of love triangles but this really caught my attention.

Casually Cursed (Southern Witch, #5) by Kimberly Frost

Penny Well Reads (pennywellreads) | 11 comments Hi Rebecca. I have read most of the series that you wrote in your comment and I know what you mean by starting to get bored. I think you should give a try to trh Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead. I found the books somewhat different from the others. The series is definitely worth it, I encourage you to give it a try and know that the first one is the weaker since as always it sets the premise for the rest of the books but you won't regret reading them.

Yes, yes, yes! Read the Kate Daniels series!! It's the best. It's one of those series where you can't stop reading and you go bonkers when you don't have the next book available :D

You could also read "Burn For Me" (the title and cover are a bit misleading, so don't let that put you off), the first book in the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews. It was awesome as well!

As you can see, they're my favourite authors :)

message 13: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 5 comments AHHH you guys are awesome, thank you so much! Ive REALLY been in the mood for a story with some real meat to it, and this helped so mich! There are some great books on here that I hadn't heard of. I'll have to give Kate Daniels a try! I've always heard great things about it, and somehow just hadn't read it yet.

Maddy Barone (maddybarone) | 74 comments I heartily second ANYTHING by Ilona Andrews. If you also enjoy fantasy romance you may want to look up Grace Draven. I really enjoyed Radiance (Wraith Kings, #1) by Grace Draven

A.N. | 12 comments H.P. Mallory has two good series that I've read, the Dulcie O'Niel Series To Kill A Warlock
and Jolie Wilkins Fire Burn and Cauldron BubbleShe has a fantastic sense of humor that is conveyed in her books, and they're a fast read.

I've also just started reading the Others series by Christine Warren and it's really good so far. A friend of mine loves them and rereads them all the time. One Bite With A Stranger

Best of luck finding your new series read :)

Lisa I was keen to look at blood slaves, but it's not available from Kobo in Australia yet., :(.

Thanks Leonie, I've been looking at that book, to be honest the cover really put me off. It makes it look trashy, and that's sooooo not how they write. I look forward to starting that then!!

message 17: by Nayab (new)

Nayab The Parasol Protectorate Series by Gail Carriger is amazing! I finished the entire series in a week. So Good!

Stasia Morineaux (stasiamorineaux) | 3 comments Hi! Would you like to try my book for FREE? It's a dark urban paranormal fantasy romance mashup. Getting lots of 5 star reviews on Amazon! Some reviewers are saying its a love child of High Celtic Fantasy and Chick Lit!
Contact me at Stasia.morineaux.chats@gmail.com and I'll send you a coupon code for Smashwords...all I ask is that if you enjoy it, to pass on the word to friends, leave a review, or let me know if anyone you know might like a review copy. =)

Sonya (icedsnowberry) | 4 comments Try The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams. It's a trilogy. Also Touch the Dark by Karen Chance. It does have a bit of a love triangle going on but very enjoyable read.

Hi, Stasia! What's the name of your book? It sounds like it's right up my alley...

Sonya, thanks so much for this rec! I LOVED the Shadow Reader but forgot to continue it.

Art (aka Whistler Reads) (art-whistlerreads) | 30 comments I just "finished revisiting/catching up with her new ones" The Julia Mills "Dragon Guards" serieshttps://www.goodreads.com/series/1174...
They started off Rough, but along about the 3rd or 4th book, everything tightened up, and they got better and better. There is a novella which has not been listed in the series yet in a new-at this date collection. Happy Reading...

message 23: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (lonnonie) | 7 comments Lisa, I've just started reading blood slaves. You can follow my reading progress if you want. Not to sure about it yet, though. Ilona Andrews has made me raise my expectations in the world building and character development department (witty banter of course included :D)..

Yeah, I hate covers like the one from burn for me, too. Apparently, they couldn't do anything about it (see one of their blog posts), and they weren't toooooo happy with it either. But the book is amazing. Great characters, unique world. Funny as always. Love it!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) Rebecca wrote: "m not necessarily looking for the typical 'magical being who works in some type of law enforcement' bit ..."

Oh boy do I hear that ... I've tried one too many series that sounded almost like someone couldn't get the book (particularly if a plebeian contemporary romance with lots of tropes and characters either too whine-y or too kick-ass to be believable) sold so just shoehorned in a supernatural working in law enforcement.

I'm assuming by not wanting law enforcement you also wouldn't want the other side of law enforcement with criminals, assassins, refugees from law enforcement, militia group ...?

I'm looking for a new series myself now that The Hollows ended (yeah, I know, supernatural being initially in law enforcement but not all of those were boring or annoying).

Ones I found different: Discount Armageddon (more humorous than some) cocktail waitress with some "different" than usual cast of supernaturals, Ill Wind I was on the fence about just because too much road tripping but definitely not the same old same old, Stormwalker not law enforcement and a few twists but not that far from what you'd expect from uf/pnr set in southwest, Kitty and the Midnight Hour radio talk show hostess caught up in the "coming out" of the supernatural -- hey, it's an involuntary werewolf named Kitty; bit on the chick lit side initially and you want to kick her to get a backbone but she she does get one and series takes off; Girl's Guide to Witchcraft is a librarian and definitely on chick lit side; ditto for Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs with a librarian unexpectedly turned vampire -- small town humor tossed in but is one of the few books I can honestly say just read the book synopsis and you'll know right away if you'll want to read it or not.

Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1) by Seanan McGuire Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville #1) by Carrie Vaughn Girl's Guide to Witchcraft (Jane Madison Series) by Mindy Klasky Stormwalker (Stormwalker, #1) by Allyson James Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) It helps me to take a look at fictfact.com series pages because they recommend other series you might like at the bottom of page. For some reason most site's individual book recommendations never help me much but entire series seems to work well.

message 26: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thanks Leonie I will.

Of all the paranormal, urban fantasy I've read, I would say Kate Daniels is the best. Sounds weird but the characters are more real to me that so many other books. And I laugh out loud at some of the banter. Kate smacking curran on the nose, while he is growling, like he is an errant child. It cracked me up. But I will definitely try Burned. The cover is a shocker, and I will follow that up on their site. I would be disappointed to.

Thanks for the friend invite, and will follow you on Blood Slaves. Next on my list, after Harry Potter, is Master of Crows, Grace Draven. It had great reviews. Night for now, :))

Pat (daschsielady) | 1 comments One of my favorite series is the "Vampires in America" by D.B. Reynolds.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (ffxprincess) My Familiar Stranger and the rest of the series is fantastic. Highly recommend. And it's free, so you didn't lose anything if you don't like it!
