Janice (jamasc) | 59919 comments I'm starting a new book (Among Others) and I'm not sure how many tippling opportunities in it, but I shall start out with coke. It's a bit early yet to break out the port.

Mariab | 3059 comments The Heart of Darkness has so many drink opportunities, that I cannot possibly cope with all them (for one, they are always on the way...). So I decided to drink only one glass Drambuie (not wanted to change my first choice) for all the reading.
(Also is work week and i must stay stable)

Heart of Darkness is a heavy book, Mariab. Glad you have some good tippling supplies to make the journey smoother. (Licks lips!) Portion control is a good thing during the work week. : )

Oh!, Connie. All people say it is a hard book, and because of that, I almost didn't pick it. But I'm enjoying it quite a lot...
I think many people find it heavy because all the descriptions (not much action), but I don't miss action at all (dont mind a book without it), besides the descriptions are made in such a beautiful prose, and the landscape is so vivid represented, than -especially the river- is a character per se in the story

Are the books as good as the show? I can't wait for season 3 to be available on dvd for my library to purchase (I will be hounding them for it!).

I really liked Among Others. There's definitely injuries and cars, so you'll have some opportunities :)

Yes, I think it is a fascinating book. Sounds like the book has clicked for you.

message 263: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Finished A Little Princess
I am having tea.

The only tippling opportunities in this book involve teas, cakes, and buns. Just not a drinking book.

I read Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir for humor. I should have gotten the vodka out and had a big drink just for plowing through this book. I did not find anything humorous in this book, and I thought it would never end. Obviously, I am in the minority because this book has won all sorts of awards. Maybe I just don't get this kind of humor.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I just finished Cocaine Blues. Wow. So many drinks! Cars, taxis, tea, cocktails, fights, etc. The tea, coffee and water got a great work out today.

Just started Faceless Killers which will be interesting to see what pops up there, and whether I can imagine it without Kenneth Branagh.

And I just heard Lexx pop a champagne cork...

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Just finished The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I have been having a healthy afternoon with green tea.

Not a lot of drinking material here but a great story.

The White Witch is a vicious woman with a vindictive, destructive streak. She kills Aslan with a knife in a brutal way.
Mr. Beaver drinks beer, and the White Witch gives Edmund a creamy, frothy drink that is the best he has ever drunk. Edmund also gobbles up Turkish Delight. Lucy has tea with Mr. Tumas, who serves a lovely cake. The Beavers have sticky marmalade rolls.

I am reading The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, so I may have to bring out the wine soon.

Sounds like a perfect ending for Phryne Fisher :)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm listening to A Year in the Merde for a humorous book. There are already several laugh out loud moments, but I am getting a little tired of his thinking he get to have sex with practically every woman he meets. I realize that's a fantasy for a lot of men, but I want more of his adjustment to being in a foreign country (from London, now in Paris for a year).

Janice - The intro to the book is from Three Men in a Boat.

message 268: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments There is a lot of whisky drinking in my current book A Hidden Fire. I'm pleased we don't have to match like for like otherwise I'd have fallen in the canal by now. Also some eating of lemon cake (that's more like it). I've been on the tea and juice for all of this. I must get hold of another bottle of wine for tomorrow night's tippling.

message 269: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I finished A Year in the Merde and ended up really enjoying it. Thank goodness I had lots of water at work. There must have been drinking on every page and many out loud laughing moments, plus some car and train rides and an injury from a marine's fists.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Some tippling in Mr. Mercedes. Just a few beers. A lot of traveling in cars, tho. And murders... does murder using a car as the weapon count? Wish I could drink at home, but hubby doesn't allow alcohol in the house. So, I have my drinks with my sister or at a party, and occasionally when out to dinner. Sipped lots of water. Boring, I know!

I must have drank several gallons of water this week. I don't drink much alcohol because of some of the meds I take, so I'm really boring :~D I love hearing what drinks you and Almeta are having.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm listening to Love Among the Chickens and can't help thinking of Rusalka and her girls :) There's train riding, whiskey and quite a few laughing moments. Lots more water - at least I'm staying hydrated, and my body is getting used to it so I'm not in the bathroom every hour.

message 273: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I drank two bottles of beer but there was no reading involved. The sun was out so it had to be done. Been reading Invasion of the Body Snatchers since then.

message 274: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Thompson | 60 comments So I stopped by Costco and picked up a bottle of mango flavored moscato and got ready to tipple with my book called The Zone of Interest. Not knowing what the book was about when I started reading it I found that the first chance to take a drink was when the Jews showed up on a train to one of the concentration camps! I decided I wasn't drinking to that.

message 275: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jun 19, 2015 05:16PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics had only a fair amount of tippling amount of tippling opportunities. The guys traveled by train a good bit and, of course, car travel was common. Hitler had a black Mercedes limo, and the Germans loved their beer. The Americans drank whiskey and beer. The French drank wine. There were too many deserts to name. I drank to all of them.
I was drinking wine for this one.

Finished Treasure Island : The pirates drink grog and rum. (actually, they swill it)
Pirates and sailors are killed and injured by gunfire, sabers, knives, and cutlasses. There is a threat of keelhauling, but, fortunately, the pirates don't follow through with the threat.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Cat on a Hot Tin Roof--lots of drinking in the play, so I followed suit and have been drinking the most delicious Bloody Mary! or two!

message 279: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Mariab - yes it's for the academy award task. before starting I was worried I wouldn't like it what with it being a classic and my track record with them but it's very good.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to drink to the atrocities of the holocaust, but if you manage to read the book you'll probably need that bottle of moscato when you finish.

With the deadline looming, I had to quit tippling last night and get serious about finishing the books I had started the first part of the week. It certainly isn't as much fun when I can't tipple during the toppler! : )

message 286: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59919 comments I kind of gave up on the tippling. There were so many modes of travel and characters drinking in the books that I read that I couldn't keep up. It was a detriment to either my kidneys or my liver, or maybe both! :)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I ended up being a Teetotaler this Toppler. A nasty sinus infection had me with a fever for 10 days, but it's finally over. Tea and sparkling water were all I drank. I'll have to make up my Tippling for the next Toppler!

message 288: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11460 comments I tried to keep track, but there were so many opportunities, that I just kept up a steady stream (in both senses).

May come back later with some of my notes.
