Is it just me, or can Harry Potter fans be kind of obnoxious and over-the-top?

hannah renee. Okay, I love Harry Potter. I really do. I love the aura of the books. The humor, the enchantedness, the message of the story, the story itself, etc.

But I have to admit when thing: the fandom is annoying. It really is. They have to be the most sentimental and the most over-protective fans on the earth. I'm mostly on Pinterest and Goodreads to experience the fandom and Pinterest is mainly where I experience it. Don't get me wrong, I pin my fair share of HP pins, but some of the boards and pins about HP that are pinned on my feed can be really... sappy. HP fans are over-zealous and extremely sentimental. 99% of the headcanons are really silly and well... sentimental; that's really the only way I can explain it. Plus, they're ALWAYS comparing it to Twilight. Twilight is not the best and even I've pinned the comparison pins... but then it gets to be excessive. I think that they can be a little... well, overly noble.

Let's compare this to the LotR fandom (which is personally MY #1 fandom <3). LotR fans can be super obsessive and crazy but there's one difference: it's never super sentimental, nor does it shove itself in other people's faces, something that the HP fandom is guilty of. (Whether you like it or not, ADMIT IT. You KNOW it's true.) LotR fans are very mature about their love for it, even though on the inside, they feel as strongly about their fandom as the HP fans do.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I'll say I'm in this fandom, but I'm not obnoxious or annoying, and I don't appreciate being part of a stereotype and generalization....

Hey. I'm in the fandom. I'm mostly talking about the people that have HP as their main fandom.

The truth about generalizations... are that the general people in the category... are the general ones. The biggest amount. Generalizations are not bad. They're just generalizations. Not everyone is in a generalization; but most are. The fact that (most) women are short is true and yes, it's a generalization. But guess what, the generalization is TRUE! Would you imagine that? No way!

Being generalized is not bad. It's just true.

But again, I'm not generalizing YOU. I am just generalizing the majority... which is the general. lol

shelsel.lh Yeah fadoms are getting a bit out of control. But some posts are awesome and some are unwelcome and over used

Ivy I have to agree. The fierce loyalty they have to their fandom is borderline scary.

hannah renee. Ivy wrote: "I have to agree. The fierce loyalty they have to their fandom is borderline scary."

Yes. Thank you.

message 7: by Nur (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nur Well, lets just say its love and move on? I am also in the HP fandom, but you are right. Sometimes they just exaggerate EVERY SINGLE THING. Like, letters from dead;
Dear Molly;
Thanks for taking care of Harry. Now its my turn with Fred.
Love Lilly.
Okay I get it, its wonderful that Molly Weasley cared for Harry but it is not that big a deal, stop making it seem like a overly-sentimental part of the series which is impotant, 'cause its not.

so my point is you're right :D

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Every fandom has it's crazies.

hannah renee. calla wrote: "Every fandom has it's crazies."

Well, then the majority of the HP fandom is crazy essentially lol.

EXACTLY!!!

Jenna I don't find the fandom annoying, except their incessant need to find meaning in everything.

message 12: by Izzy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Izzy I think Harry is very strong and very intelligent and that all the over-the-top stuff is not what he's trying to do. He's not trying to be over-the-top, he's saving the world and being modest.

hannah renee. Hungergames19 wrote: "I think Harry is very strong and very intelligent and that all the over-the-top stuff is not what he's trying to do. He's not trying to be over-the-top, he's saving the world and being modest."

LOL... I think you misunderstand. I'm not talking about the character of Harry, I'm talking about the fanbase for the books. lol

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean. Same here with me. WAY too much.

message 15: by ally (new)

ally I'm in the fandom, and it really depends on what part of it you're in. It's so diverse, but the fans can be a tad over the top.

(Me personally, I think that the HP fandoms messed up. Either their ships and all. You have the canon ones, and then the messed up non-canon ships. *sigh*)

whoops. yeah totally. I misunderstood and yeah harry potter fans are always over the top

message 17: by Mavy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mavy The thing is, in order to be a "Fan" of anything really, you have to be "over-zealous and extremely sentimental" . It can't be helped, if you love something, a book, a movie, a musical band etc., you just automatically become over-protective or even defensive about it and there's nothing really wrong with it,some people are just really passionate about the things they love. So, even if they are annoying, you can just ignore them and let them do their thing. There's nothing that can be done to tamp down such zeal.
Cheers!

message 18: by Ruby (last edited Jul 11, 2015 12:59PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruby I prefer sentimental posts about Harry Potter in the face of fandoms that judge you and insult you if you don't share the same opinions about the fandom. The Harry Potter fandom is harmless and there are a lot that are worse out there. It may make a big deal over deaths or relationships at times, but I have never felt threatened or insulted because of it. Obnoxious is not the same thing as hurtful, cruel, or mean.

message 19: by ally (new)

ally Summarises the HP fandom pretty well!

1. NEVER LIKE PERCY WEASLEY HES A TRAITOR BECAUSE HE WASNT LIKE THE REST OF HIS FAMILY

2. PETER PETTIGREW WAS NEVER A MARAUDER EVEN IF HIS NAME IS ON THE MARAUDERS MAP

3. YOU HAVE TO SHIP REMUS AND SIRIUS FUCKING EACH OTHER BECAUSE ITS APPARENTLY CANON

4. YOU HAVE TO LOVE HERMIONE DESPITE THE FACT SHES NOTHING SPECIAL

don't you think you're making a fallacious argument? and yes generalizations can be bad they're discriminatory like when racist people condemn a certain group based on opinion instead of facts.

Oh and LOTR fandom vs HP? well did you ever consider that MAYBE its because LOTR has been around for quite sometime and a good number of its fans are already pretty advance on the age spectrum and you have to consider the novels themselves & what sort of readers they attract. Its sad and annoying yes but HP does attract the types who doesn't care much for substance but hunt around for ships and all those other cheesy stuff while LOTR, is i suppose more stoic but well i'm sure there's a fanfic somewhere about Sauron and Frodo.

The thing is FANdom, its basically the synonym for over-the-top, drooling maniacs (of sorts) and yes obnoxious to a point. If you really can't stand it then quit pinterest & goodreads cause they'll never go away and it'll just stress you out or learn to ignore.

Uummmmmm. I would say otherwise. HP is compared to Twilight ALL THE TIME and it gets to be extremely obnoxious. Plus, they always seem to shove it in people's faces that their fandom is the best and act like blubbering babies about every single silly canon there is. IT IS ANNOYING.

message 24: by ally (new)

I don't get it.

That is true. I myself am zealous for my top fandom, Lord of the Rings. But I'm not to the point of obsessing over silly, overly sentimental canons. The HP fans are so justice oriented also. You can't like Snape because he hated Lily's son. He was a horrible person blah blah blah. I just personally hate that. I hate it and it's annoying because I get it on my Pinterest feed quite a bit--though recently I've stopped following the Potter fans.

hannah renee. To state my case, other fandoms, such as Hunger Games or Divergent are not nearly as obnoxious either. They're actually pretty silent. They're not in your face and they're pretty recent.

message 27: by ally (new)

ally Regarding the HP fandom, I feel like they twist canon for their own belief.

They're pains in the ass to some degree. Take it fork someone whose in it.

message 28: by Bree (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bree I haven't experienced the HP fandom (whatever adjective of choice)... I joined The Immortal Instruments fan club, and left it soon after for similar reasons pertaining to the topic of this discussion.
I think Lord Of The Rings fandom has a more mature following.

Bookworm54 I haven't really experienced a ton of annoyingness in the HP fandom, so maybe that means I am the annoying one, I don't know. I don't know how I could be, really, because this is my only "social media." I don't know, I just think there are definitely worse fandoms. Specifically on Youtube. I also have never gotten into shipping in anything really, so maybe that's part of it.

message 30: by ally (new)

ally The YouTube fandoms... Phan right?? (Never saw the point of it, but it's one of those big name ships like Destiel, Johnlock, Merarthur, Wolfstar etc) Bleugh. I'm on a lot of social media, you can't escape those ships...

Bookworm54 Yeah, I mean Phan. I went through a phase a few weeks long where I shipped them, but then I started seeing the Phandom everywhere, and they are kind of terrifying. Shipping just isn't my thing, plus, fan fiction can be even scarier than any fandom's takeover of the internet.

Bookworm54 P.S. PJ's content is way better than Dan and Phil's. I still like Dan and Phil to an extent, but PJ is my favorite. There is a line that can be crossed

Bookworm54 I honestly think there are even book/franchise fandoms that can be worse as well. (getting a little off topic, trying to bring it back in)

message 34: by ally (new)

ally They never really got my attention, to be honest. But yeah. Fanfic is the web version of books really, and as a writer of it, I totally agree. (Btw, good fanfic is very hard to find if you're really annoyed by certain common pairings and tropes. Which is why I wrote my own.)

Bookworm54 "Fanfic is the web version of books really, and as a writer of it, I totally agree. (Btw, good fanfic is very hard to find if you're really annoyed by certain common pairings and tropes. Which is why I wrote my own.)"

I have read one good fanfic in my life, but I don't want to have to dig through all the layers of smut to find it. If that's what you write, don't take it personally, I just don't want to spend my time reading that.

Certain pairings really do get on my nerves. ESPECIALLY in HP. Why did they all marry their gf/bf, friend, or best friend from their childhood? For me, that would just be weird... And Ronmione, it doesn't seem like it would work. Don't get me wrong, Harry with Hermione would be way too cliche, I don't like either of them

hannah renee. Oh my goodness I agree with you (Bookworm54) on everything! Going through smut is not enjoyable and not worth it. But trust me, if you were on more social media you'd see the over-zealousness of the HP fandom. I also agree with you on Dan and Phil. I love them... but sometimes the things they talk about are a little... too... tmi? mature? I don't know.

I could do without quite so much 'shipping, and a bit more analysis of the texts. And I wonder why the vast majority of Potterheads seem to be teenage girls. Most people seem to be sane enough, though.

Julia Is it just me, or can PEOPLE be kind of obnoxious and over-the-top?

Why, yes, they can. Especially the outspoken ones that speak up more often.

Theodora Giovannelli I feel the same way girl, preach.

message 44: by [deleted user] (last edited May 31, 2016 08:19AM) (new)

I enjoy many aspects of the Harry Potter fan community- they're fun to discuss and get creative with- but a big reason why I could never enjoy the series the way most people did was because of the "fandom". HP was getting to its highest point of popularity when I was much younger (the sixth book was seeing its midnight release), and my older siblings were literary buffs very much into the series. It was their (and several other people's) recommendation for me to delve into the books, but for whatever reason I found them difficult to immerse myself in. Even after reading the entire series later and finding myself appreciative for what it accomplished, I still felt it was overrated, and in a way still feel so now. When I think about rereading an HP book, it's the kind of fandom that surrounds HP as a whole that comes to mind and asks me to reconsider.

I feel the world "feelings" hasn't been felt in quite some time, being replaced by its shortened term "feels".

Food for thought. :)

message 47: by Theodora (new)

Theodora Giovannelli I couldn't agree with you more! I love HP myself too but the fandom is over the top and the commercialization is over the top too. Personally I prefer LOTR and find it better than HP in every way.

Idk I said the firs thing that came to mind. I wasn't trying to pick an argument, just trying to have a sense of humor. You don't always have to be rude to people you know. Excuse me for trying to be funny and not insult others. My bad.
