Is it just me, or can Harry Potter fans be kind of obnoxious and over-the-top?

Ummmm....... Bilbo has killer sarcasm. And nobody was being rude. Just unimpressed.

Well Harry has glasses. And glasses are cool.

(Get the reference?)

Also, not to argue, calling someone of having the maturity of an elementary and juvenile kid is if not rude, plain mean.

Gabi Made a joke about Slytherins being evil. Never joke about Slytherins being evil with these people. They will persecute you.

It's not. Sure sometimes we do get a bit obsessed but what gives us the fierce loyalty is the fact that people generalize us as a bunch of idiots who have sworn themselves to the Harry Potter fandom. We love the whole plot and the magic and the language and not to mention the characters. Comparing it with Twilight is plain stupidity but yes, we do love Harry Potter. I realized my love for books through Harry Potter, so it has a huge part in what I am now. But what you say does have a point for some people who really are a bunch of idiots who have sworn themselves to Harry Potter.

Zinilili In my opinion:

Pros:

Creativity (Music Videos, Fanfictions, Art)

Long Disscusions over unnecessary stuff

Obsession over Hogwarts Houses (#ravenclawrules)

Cons:

Too many ships (drapple, seriously?!?)

Comparison and disregard for other books

Also I disagree that Generalization is a good thing. It isn't always true and true doesn't always = good.

Well, LotR is much older than the Harry Potter series, so the fandom has had a while to die out. And most of the fans are older people since LotR isn't generally a childrens' series. This isn't the case with the Harry Potter series. Even if we were given time, the fandom probably wouldn't die out as much as the one for LotR has. There are new additions to the HP fandom daily in whatever form and we love the series so much we can't help but fangirl or fanboy over it. Also, there are a lot of young Harry Potter fans unlike the LotR fandom and younger people tend to be more enthusiastic, so you shouldn't be surprised if we're obsessive.

Annoying is an opinion word, so I don't have to admit anything. I disagree. I don't think the fandom is annoying, but maybe you just feel that way because you're not a strong Harry Potter fan. Someone with LotR as their '#1 fandom' will obviously dislike the fact that Harry Potter is the #1 fandom for several times as many people. I can't take your argument seriously because you have too many opinions and not enough evidence. You need to elaborate when you say 'sappy.' Just calling an entire fandom sappy without backing it up more isn't a very wise thing to do at all.

Give me more evidence and reasons and then I'll take you seriously and I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way.

Suzi!!! IAmBroke wrote: "God forbid you say something negative about HP the ravenous fanboys will descend upon you in milliseconds.

You're right. In most cases, when you say something like what you've said about the Harry Potter series, the fandom will fight you. Just, next time, don't forget about the fangirls.

I don't think there's anything wrong about wanting to purchase fandom merchandise. Excuse me if you disagree, but most of us, while reading the HP series, have felt like no or few other series have ever caused us to felt. You can't blame us for wanting to at least be reminded of those feelings in such a world like today. It's no one's fault if we wanted to be reminded of one of the things that bring us such happiness.

And if there are people benefiting from our purchases, so be it. There are people benefiting from almost everything, but we don't let it stop us from feeling happiness. I can say that manufacturers use fandoms, HP in particular, to their gain and that they often take advantage of us, but I speak for myself when I say we don't regret it at the end of the day.

Suzi!!! Ivy wrote: "I have to agree. The fierce loyalty they have to their fandom is borderline scary."

Does it scare you when we defend our favorite characters and the things that brought us childhood joy? Does it scare you when we defend our love of the series and find more ways to indulge it? Do our numerous posts and memes and theories and merchandise scare you?

Suzi!!! Jenna wrote: "I don't find the fandom annoying, except their incessant need to find meaning in everything."

Can you blame us for being thoughtful?

What do you mean, 'what part of it you're in'? Be a bit more specific.

Where are you getting your Harry Potter fandom info from? It's inaccurate. That might be the reason you 'hate it'. I hate how you and so many other people judge a fandom without looking past the surface.

I can agree with that, but it's mostly just because LotR is old and so are most of its fans. There's also not as much material to fangirl over.

I agree with you about fanfic. Most of it is just immature or inappropriate or, no offense to anyone, not worth reading.

Also, the reason most of the HP characters probably ended up with their childhood loves is because they went through a lot of traumatic events. People are more likely to bond closely than not after going through traumatic events. I think nearly being killed by the Dark Lord counts as a traumatic event.

Suzi!!! ally wrote: "Summarises the HP fandom pretty well!

I disagree. There's more to it than that. I dare you to look past the first things you see. We can make this many jokes about the series because our thoughts about it are deeper. You would know this if you looked past the surface.

Actually, every Fandom has it's repetitive and/or annoying areas. Ever heard of the 'one does not simply' meme? Or the 'but today is not that day!' one? Also, lots of Lord of the Rings fans are older than Harry Potter fans, since HP was targeted toward a younger audience.
I'm not saying there are no older fans (I know quite a few) but.. have you met a 8 year old that's not a prodigy who's read Lord of the Rings? (Having it read to them does not count)

You said Hunger games and Divergent are much quieter. But have you considered that lots of Hunger games and Divergent fans are also Harry Potter fans? And that's their main fandom?

About Harry Potter always being compared to Twilight? As far as I've seen, nearly EVERYTHING is compared to Twilight. Percy Jackson. Even Lord of the Rings!

(Reply to Bookworm 54) Why did they all marry their gf/bf or best friend from their childhood? They didn't. Take Draco Malfoy or Luna Lovegood for example. However, sometimes it does seem a little like that. But probably because you know someone a lot better if you go through seven years of schooling with them, rather than switching classes very year. (Or schools)

So yeah, what I'm basically saying is HP fans are commonly less mature than LOTR fans, most everyone supports Harry Potter, and everything is compared to Twilight. And you know someone better if you go through seven years with them rather than one. Or two.

My apologies for being so emotional (but not obnoxious or over-the-top).

I'm what my best friend calls the "Ultimate Fangirl" (HP, Star Wars, Hamilton) so I have no room to talk, but yes, Harry Potter can become a ridiculous obsession for some people. There's a balance between being in love and being unhealthily IN LOVE.

Grace Staying out of this convo because it got angry pretty fast but just saying this one thing.
I'm 13 and LOTR is one of my main fandoms. A lot of people about my age actually really like it so I don't think the fandom is dying at all....
