Amanda Pearce | 3 comments I read this book in 1993-1994. It was a kids chapter book. There was a girl who would not eat broccoli because it was dead, or had been alive, or something like that. Her aunt was staying at her house while her parents were away somewhere. She wanted to know why you had to wash the backs of plates when you only eat off of the fronts.

Here is a snippet of the description:
It's not fair, Emma thinks, for her parents to go away (for five whole days) and leave her with an aunt and uncle she hardly knows. What if they don't like children? But Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Eliot like Emma and her brother, Zachary, just fine. They also like rules. Rules about: Eating. Sleeping. Cleaning up. Messing up. Emma doesn't believe in rules. Not unless they're hers: Eating no broccoli, dead or alive.

I agree it's the right book. Amazon inside shows:

"You don't eat off the backs of the plates, either," said Uncle Elliot. "But we wash them."
