Gavin had just finished with a map makers meeting and was now at central camp. He had a glass in his hand filled halfway with water. It had been full, but Gavin had drained half in one gulp a few moments earlier. His throat had felt raw from talking so much, and he hadn't had anything to drink the whole day. He was seated on the ground, back against a log. There was a fire going because it was late. The doors had already closed for the night, which meant all the runners were back as well. Gavin threw a piece of wood into the flames, watching them rise again as they devoured the wood. He ran a hand through his hair and took another sip of water, listening absentmindedly to the talk of the girl gladers. He was one of only a few boys here and, although he was used to it, he still didn't really understand why he was often sitting by himself in the evenings. He really should try to make some more friends.

Gavin looked up when someone sat down beside him. Realizing it was Ava, he smiled at her. He had exchanged a few words with her before. He didn't know much about her, but she seemed pretty nice and laid back. "Hey, Ava." He greeted her, nodding to her. He shrugged. "I had a meeting. Those can get pretty intense." He explained. The map meetings tended to get out of hand, with the map makers and the runners all arguing on what their next move should be. Gavin tended to try and just listen to the suggestions and look over his maps, but somehow he was always pulled in. They lasted a while too. "You look pretty worn out. How's the garden?"

Gavin nodded at her words. The garden seemed like a pain to keep up. It was the lifeline of the gladers though, so there was a lot of pressure on the track-hoes. That's probably why Ava was so tired. He sighed at her question, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know. I feel like every meeting we have, we end up hitting a new wall." He said with a groan. It was frustrating that a way out hadn't been found. "It does seem like that though." He agreed. Meetings had been running longer lately. "That's mostly due to all the arguing. The runners are trying to try different tactics. I know a few of them swapped sectors for a day to see if the other had missed something. Nothing new was found." It sort of sucked, knowing almost everything about the routes in the maze but having no idea how to get out.

Gavin nodded in agreement, though said nothing. The runners were trying almost everything, but nothing ever worked. But there had to be a way out. If there wasn't, why would they be here? He tapped his fingers in the dirt, letting silence develop between them for a few moments. "Have you ever thought about what might happen if the box quit coming?" He asked Ava quietly. It was an idea that had been bugging him the whole time he had been there. If they didn't have supplies, they would be dead. Unless, the runners found the way out.

Gavin noticed Ava stiffen up and he wished he hadn't asked that question. Even after being in the glade for a few months, he still asked dumb questions. "Right sorry..." He trailed off, frowning. "I just..." He looked over at her with his eyebrows furrowed. "What if it did. We wouldn't be prepared for that." He said in a low voice, glancing at the other girls in the area. "I hate to be a downer, but if it stopped working tomorrow, what then?"

Gavin let Ava yell at him. He probably deserved it. She had been here much longer than him, and the box had always come up. It was probably going to continue to do so. He shook his head. "No, I don't want you to say that, because I know it's not true. Nobody knows what will happen." He said, watching the flames in the fire. It wasn't good enough for him though. Everyone was asking how . They all wanted to know how they were going to get out, that they overlooked the simple things that were keeping them alive.

Gavin shrugged and sighed at her question. He turned his gaze away from the fire and back to Ava. "I don't know I'm just..." He paused. "I'm just worried. Everyone is focusing their attention on the maze, and I'm worried what might happen if something as simpke as the electricity went out. I'm just-" He cut himself off. What was he going to say, scared? Worried? He didn't even know. He wouldn't tell Ava that he was scared. That would just make him look bad.

Gavin frowned at her words. She didn't know how hard it was for him to not think ahead. He was a map maker. He was constantly searching for what the next step would be, trying to think ahead, trying to anticipate what came next. He kaughed at her words. "Inspirational speech, Ava." He nodded to her, grinning. "I get what you're saying, and I really do try to focus on what's happening now."

Gavin laughed. "You're welcome." He joked, smiling. He nodded seriously, filling her words in his brain. He needed to start acting more like that. He laughed again when Ava said a lot of the other guys are jerks. "Well, I'm glad I'm not one of the guys everyone hates." He said with a smile. He was pretty sure there were some girls that hated him. "I don't know. It's really weird, just because all the girls aren't used to it either. I still get weird looks thrown at me." It was bad enough he was one of the newer gladers, but he also didn't fit in just because of his gender.

Gavin listened to her words, not really sure how he should feel. He didn't exactly want to look invisible around the glade, but it would be nice to have the strange looks stop. He nodded. "Yeah. I'm still relatively new because I've only been here for a few months." He said with a shrug. At her question, Gavin pushed himself off the ground and to his feet, nodding. "Sure, I could eat. I didn't have any lunch because of that meeting."
