After a long day of working again, Sam was finally able to relax. He sat down on grass and leaned against the pole. He took off his gloves and put them beside him but then he caught a glimpse of his knuckles. He lifted his hands up into view. Sam stared at both of his hands and then he looked at the palm of his hands. He didn't even realize how scarred his knuckles were. But then again, he rarely looked at his hands and always focused on the task. It was almost scary how much he was oblivious to the littlest things, rather things on him. He is the type of person that wouldn't know a pimple was on him unless someone pointed it out to him. He was also the type that wouldn't even notice if he was bleeding if he had other things on his mind.
Sam slowly put his hands down. One was next to his side and his other reached to grab his water canteen. He drank quite a bit in one sip, almost half of the water canteen to be exact. He barely drank anything today, even in the hot sun. He was pretty lucky that he didn't suffer hypothermia and dehydration but as most would say, he is one interesting kid.

Wild blonde hair loose and flowing, Adelle stormed out of the Map Making room, lips pursed. She was sick of all of them. Sick of the Maze. Sick of being nothing but a brain to be picked to get out of this Hell Hole. Who even knew if there was a way out. Maybe they were all just searching in vain, doomed to perish here as they turned so old that their hair was either grey or falling out and they couldn't walk. Or perhaps they would have been put out of their misery by then.
Suddenly, her eyes caught on a figure and she squinted through the light to see who it was. Oh. Sam. Adelle froze and her cheeks flamed. Part of her wanted to go over there and say hi, to talk to him, while another part of her wanted to run away. To hide like she had last time they met. When he saved her. Slowly, she took a hesitant step towards him, wondering if he had seen her or not.

Sam looked over from the corner of his eye and saw Adelle looking at him. Almost immediately, a faint smile formed on his face. He noticed from the way she looked that she was hesitant. "Don't worry," he said to her. "I don't bite." He didn't know if she could hear him with all of the people talking, the sound of the animals, and the clanks of pot and pans in the kitchen nearby. Maybe she could read his lips...
He didn't loose his gaze from her and patiently waited for her to get close. He didn't move or get up because maybe it would just make her more nervous. He just watched her and waited for her to decide.

Adelle couldn't help feeling a little happy when he gave her a faint smile. At least that meant he didn't hate her for running off last time. After all, she had just needed to get away. The tree incident had scared her more than she had let on. Plus, it felt weird having someone in the Glade be nice to her and want to save her. Most of them thought she was just a silly little girl. Adelle smiled a tiny bit at his words and then began to walk over to him slowly. She kept his gaze for a bit, before looking away. She weaved skilfully in and out of people before she came to be standing next to Sam.
Hesitantly, she lowered to the ground next to him, crossing her legs underneath her. She knew the position would make her legs go numb, but that didn't matter. She actually quite liked the feeling. "Hey," Adelle murmured quietly, playing with her sleeve. She tucked her hair behind her ear, looking down at the ground in front of her rather than at Sam.

Sam was actually pretty happy when she walked over to him. The thought crossed his mind that maybe the tree incident made her even more hesitant to talk to him. Unlike most boys who thought of her as a 'silly little girl' he looked at her differently. He felt like they were the same. Like she was holding something in her that she couldn't remember. Or maybe she knew exactly what she was hiding.
Sam watched as she sat down beside him. "Hey," he said to her. "Did you just get out of a meeting?" Sam asked her, trying to make conversation. He often wondered what those meetings were like, if they were just people discussing the maze or if there was more to it.

Adelle kept staring at the ground, not wanting to make eye contact with him or anything. She felt unbelievably shy for some reason. She felt scared that he just thought she was more stupid because of her almost falling out of the tree. She was sure he would be just like the other Gladers, if she got attached. She wanted to try not to develop a friendship with him, just in case he turned out to be horrible.
Adelle let out an annoyed snort when he asked if they had a meeting and nodded with a grimace. She glanced up at him, before back at her feet quickly. She thought he may tell the other map makers what she was saying about them. Oh well, she just couldn't hold it any longer. "They treat me like a child!" Adelle exploded, hands tight little fists as they pulled up grass in anger. "Like I'm not as good as them just because I'm younger and- and a girl," Adelle explained, face screwed up.

Sam frowned and nodded slowly, "They shouldn't treat you like that. It shouldn't matter if you are a girl or boy and it shouldn't matter how old you are. If you understand what is going on then they should just keep their mouths shut," he said to her. He knew in the back of his head that it was harder for girls to fit in because their were so many boys here but treating girls like they were an outsider?
Sam looked down at the ground, silence brewed between them. His eyes were fixated on the ground with thoughts racing throughout his mind. He looked back up at her, "I'm sorry they are doing that to you."

Adelle looked back to Sam, genuinely surprised. He wasn't like the other boys who seemed to make fun of her. She smiled a little, obviously grateful. She didn't say anything, but her expression showed that she was very pleased with what he has said. It was almost like him standing up for her. Adelle liked that.
Enjoying the peaceful silence, she glanced up at him as he spoke. She smiled softly at his words, which made her look a lot prettier and kinder. "Thank you," Adelle told him, voice gentle and sweeter. She hadn't smiled and spoke like that since she got to the Glade.

Sam's faded smile turned into something a little more obvious. "It's the truth," he said with a shrug. Sam felt a shiver go down his spine when they locked eyes. He wasn't sure why but it almost felt as if he knew her his is entire life. He looked away at the ground.
"How long have you been here?" Sam asked out of nowhere. He had seen her around but he hadn't known how long she had been here. He was fairly new himself and had only been around for a couple of months.

Letting her smile get a bit bigger, Adelle licked her lips and shrugged as well. "Still, you seem to be the only one who understands that," Adelle added. "So thank you," Adelle told him again. Stomach fluttering a little in a way she didn't really understand, Adelle kept his gaze for a little longer before she looked away with slightly flushed cheeks.
Adelle thought for a little while about the question, trying to calculate. She looked up in the air, biting her lip, before looking back to Sam. "Five... months?" Adelle guessed, shrugging. She wasn't certain. "You have been here about two, three right?" Adelle asked without thinking.

Sam looked back up at her. He was a little shocked that he was the only one that understood but he didn't push to know why she thought that. "You're welcome," he said softly. For a second, his eyes bounced across the site, looking at everyone passing by. He almost felt like he was pulled into a fantasy and that everyone else didn't exist for that short time.
Sam nodded and when she asked if he had been here two or three months, he nodded again. "I have been here for around two months. I am going on three next week," he told her. Although he had been here for almost three months, it still felt like just yesterday the boys pulled him out of the awful box like crate that he came in.

Adelle didn't have a response to what he said, so she just smiled at him slightly. Looking away from Sam, she stared down at her feet, wondering if she was actually making a friend in this godforsaken place. The thought was strange but slightly compelling. As she thought, her wide eyes wandered back to Sam's figure, staring at the boy shamelessly and without really noticing she was doing it.
Adelle's light pink lips curled up into a mischievous grin. "Greenie," Adelle teased, biting her lip to try to calm her spreading smile. "Sam is almost like a greenie, only here for two months," Adelle taunted gently, having a bit of fun for once. She reached out and pushed his shoulder playfully.

Sam started to chuckle, "Well, you could say that but I think you missed the cut off date." As he said this, he smiled widely and winked teasingly. As they teased each other and like Adelle, he was actually starting to have fun instead of worrying about working in the garden and collecting food for the people in the Glade.
"You know, talking to you actually makes me feel at home. Somewhere that isn't here if you know what I mean," he said to her. He knew it was random but he couldn't help it. He felt this weird connection to her. When he mentioned that she felt like home, he hoped she knew what he meant. Although he couldn't remember anything about his past, he felt like their was a place long ago that was warm and cozy. Most of all, it felt like it was surrounded by love.

Adelle grinned as he chuckled, glad he seemed amused. Adelle laughed again at his words, but her cheeks lightly coloured as he winked at her. She looked down, suddenly feeling shy again. She didn't really understand why. She kept getting these almost stabbing pains in her stomach whenever Sam smiled like that or winked. It was strange.
However, she looked up in surprise when Sam said his next words, looking a little confused. Her cheeks darkened just a little, but she hoped it would seem like the sun. She couldn't understand why Sam was making her act like this. He was just another boy from the Glade. "W- what do you mean by that?" Adelle asked, internally screaming at herself for stammering and seeming nervous.

Sam adjusted a little. "Do you have that feeling where you know you came from somewhere but all you can remember is this place? Like that place where you were your whole life and you didn't have a care in the world?" He asked her. He waited for her to respond. Maybe she didn't get that feeling, but he got it all the time. It was a place he missed that he would keep forever in his heart.

Adelle nodded, since she did get that feeling sometimes. However, she also got a feeling of loss and sadness, which she didn't understand. She was itching to ask him why she reminded him of that, since when she felt like that she felt almost love. The thought of Sam associating her with that made her blush and look down in embarrassment.
"Why... why do I make you think of that?" Adelle asked quietly, refusing to look up at Sam from shyness.

Sam rubbed the back of his neck. "I am not sure actually but something about you makes me feel like I have known you forever," he said to her. Sam looked away and at the ground. He almost felt embarrassed telling her all of this but it also felt natural to him.
Like Adelle, he had a feeling of loss and sadness. That feeling plagued him almost everyday and he had no idea why. Maybe it was something that he couldn't remember. He wished that he knew and it frustrated him that he couldn't think of what happened.

Adelle blushed at his words, refusing to look at Sam from embarrassment. She didn't know what to say. Adelle slowly brought her knees up to her chest, biting her lip. "That's..." Adelle murmured, not sure what to say. Slowly, she scrambled to her feet. "I should probably go," Adelle told him quickly, cheeks very red. "Like I should help them with the maps again," Adelle bluffed, obviously lying. She didn't move to leave after standing up, wondering if Sam would try to stop her.

Sam got up with her, "Wait, Adelle-" he chewed at his lower lip. He knew she was lying and of course, he was making her nervous when he was trying to be her friend. You can't blame him though, he hasn't really talked to girls his age. Actually, he really hasn't talked to any girls. "I'm sorry if I embarrassed you," he said looking down. "Do you, uh, want to hang out tomorrow?" Sam asked her as he looked up with his blue eyes glowing a little.

Adelle stopped and looked at him when he got up and spoke, eyes wide and nervous. He was making her feel awkward and shy for some reason that she didn't really get. Normally she felt angry and feisty around the boys. At her words, she blushed deeper and nodded just a tad. "I... Okay," Adelle whispered, playing with her shirt sleeves. She gave him a quick smile, before hurrying off, heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know where she was going. Maybe into the woods.
