It is nice to see a task that is about awareness of disabilities. I am vision impaired. It has taken me a long time to become independent and all I have achieved.
This is a cool coincidence...I just finished Cinnamon and Gunpowder today, and one of my favorite characters was Joshua the cabin boy who is deaf. :D Great task btw!
Thanks, Jayme & Megan! I'm excited about it, too. And Morgan, I checked the description and it does mention the deaf character, so I will add it to the approved list!
Deafening actually fits both Options One and Two. Plus it looks like a great book. This one is definitely going on my TBR pile.
Thank you for creating this task! I checked out Deafening from the library last month but haven't read it yet. There is also a sequel titled Tell, which looks really good!
Awesome Task. I have just finished reading The Stand and was having a hard time finding a task for it but this fits in perfectly as one of the main protagonists is a deaf mute.
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter also has a main character who is a deaf-muteAlmost any biography of Helen Keller would work as well.
In This Sign sounds like the novel I read back in the late '70s or early '80s ... but I seem to remember a different title. Anyway it's about a deaf couple with a hearing child.
Please confirm Moon Awakening for option 1. The secondary character, Abigail, is deaf according to ShelfariShe is also the heroine in the 2nd book Moon Craving where the GR description clear states that she is deaf.
Thanks.
Any biography of Beethoven would work for option 1. As would this novel: Conversations with Beethoven
I liked Deafening a lot when I read it several years ago. A good memoir is Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love.Last month I read an interesting historical fiction Conversations with Beethoven which should fit about the last six months of Beethoven's life. (oops, I should have read Book Concierge's comments first.)
Now I just have to find a book for me.
I would like to read Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love. In Deaf culture, CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults) are very much a bridge to the hearing world for their parents.
Book Concierge wrote: "Any biography of Beethoven would work for option 1. As would this novel: Conversations with Beethoven"I second Conversations with Beethoven - it reads fairly quick and has an interesting structure.
BriKie wrote: "Lauren, Moon Awakening & Moon Craving are approved for Option One. Happy werewolf reading!"Thanks BriKie. I hope I will :0)
Can you look at It Happened at the Fair for option 1?The female MC is a teacher of deaf children & teaches lip reading & some signs to the male MC, who has partial hearing loss which gets worse over the course of the novel.
Thanks!
Melanie, I looked up some outside sources and confirmed that the male MC does indeed become deaf throughout the course of the novel. It Happened at the Fair is approved.Nicole, Burn Down the Ground: A Memoir looks perfect for the task.
Can I get Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece approved for option 1? The goodreads description says she was born deaf.
So since The Stand is allowed, is the Graphic novel version also allowed? > This one: The Stand: Captain Trips
Yes, Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece features a deaf character and is just fine.I believe The Stand: Captain Trips will work. It includes Nick, the character that is deaf, and has more than 100 pages.

awesome thanks :)
hi BriKie - is a link to a review on GR stating that a character is deaf enough of verification? I started reading Mouth To Mouth where the main female character is deaf and have found several reviews ( among my friends) that address this - I can easily link the review in my post
Hi Dee, I can clearly determine from various GR reviews that there is a deaf character. Mouth To Mouth is approved.

I am deaf and have been since shortly after birth. Being deaf has shaped my identity and my everyday life. It's something I'm fiercely proud of, and sometimes simultaneously frustrated with. My task is all about deafness.
Read ONE book from the following options.
**Note: Books with the genre children or kids may NOT be used for this task.**
Books with genres “Graphic Novel,” “Sequential Art,” “Comics,” and “Manga” that conform to all other SRC rules may be used.
Requirement: Identify which option you chose when you post.
1) Read a book that has a deaf character, or is written by a deaf author, or is about deaf experience. The book can be fiction or non-fiction.
Required: If information is not available in the GR data to justify your choice of book, you must provide an outside link that confirms the book's suitability for the task.
2) Read a book that has the word, "deaf" in the title or subtitle. Variations of the word are okay, as long as the root word remains intact.
3) Choose and read a book found on Stories about Individuals with Disabilities.
Required: Identify on which page of the list your book can be found when you post.
