The answer to this question becomes more complicated as I age. For example, The Brothers Karamozov, by Dostoevsky, was one of my favorite books when I was 21, and maybe it still is, but I'm afraid to go back and see because I'll be terribly disappointed if it isn't.

I'm going to go with It by Stephen King. Aside from being a great story he demonstrates such great character development that you feel like you are part of the children's group. Second on my list would be Crime and Punishment by the already mentioned Dostoevsky.
