Ashley, that is my favorite of the "strong woman" trilogies. It reminds me (somewhat) of urban fantasy. I really liked it.I have suggested to others to read the first book. Watch the movie with Sub-titles. Then watch the American version later.
I agree that Simon Vance did a great job with the series.
Cursed
] Benedict JackaThis is the second in the Alex Verus series. The series is urban fantasy so for SF/F fans, I give this series a thumbs up. It is the closest to that feeling of the Dresden Files which may be why Jim Butcher recommends it to his fan.
For those that might have an interest in this series, the first book is "Fated" and the kindle edition is $1.99 right now with only 3.49 to add the audible whispersync. So you can start the series for less than a credit.
I just did the Whispersync deal for the 3rd book for "Taken" which is the third in the series. It was $5.48 for the Kindle and then add audible for $3.48. Still a good deal.
I bought a number of old children's classics in a sale a little while back. Tonight I read The Boxcar Children. The Actress Phyllis Newman did the narration but was only meh.

I've been enjoying them, and I love the narration...I don't think she's tried to do any male voices, it's all just in the one voice (which I prefer).
I finished If You Could Be Mine & The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Storyon audiobook and I read Rose of Sarajevo in Kindle this past weeks. I am still struggling to read The Siege in prints for the past two week, and today after reading 140 pages I finally gave up on it. I couldn't get into it at all and didn't care about any of the characters thus far.I began Stoner and hope to finish it tomorrow.
Wrapped up The Secret Life of Bees- what a wonderful book. Wonder if the movie is any good...Started Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography. He starts with his birth and I had to rewind to be sure I heard it right...wait, June 15th? That's today! How funny I started this book on his birthday. I don't usually read autobiographies; so far this is crazy fun.
The Thing Around Your Neck was my first Adichie and I was blown away by her stories and also by Adjoa Andoh's narration. She also narrates Americanah and I think she does a fantastic job. Kristie wrote: "Killing Floor was a decent action thriller. Dick Hill is a competent narrator, but I just never felt like he was a good match for Jack Reacher. Her writing is fantastic. I agree about Andoh's narration of this and Americanah. I also loved Half of a Yellow Sun, narrated by Robin Miles.
Started Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography. He starts w..."I really enjoyed Harris' autobiography. If I'd read it in a book, I would have read it straight through so as not to miss the NPH awesomeness, so the audiobook was just fine with me in terms of format. And listening to NPH narrate...well that was just a treat. :)
Just finished The Knockoff: A Novel. As a baby boomer struggling to hold on in this high technical world, this was right in my wheel house. I laughed my way through a solo six hour road trip yesterday to sadly finish. The narration was perfection. I actually think it being audio made it an even better read. I even got a giggle out of someone verbalizing emoticons to me, “hashtag too funny, smiley face, shrug, hashtag don’t knock it till you’ve tried it, hamster face.”
The book that I had loaded and ready to go afterwards was also a blind pick and is equally enjoyable. I've been wearing my earbuds the entire day because I can't leave it alone. A coming of age story with a bit of a mystery.. The Truth According to Us
Wish they all came this easy.....
Catherine wrote: "Wrapped up The Secret Life of Bees- what a wonderful book. Wonder if the movie is any good..."I also just finished the book and then watched the film straight after. The film follows the book quite closely and I enjoyed it, I thought Dakota Fanning was perfect for the lead role.
oooh I'll have to look for NPH's autobiography on audio, especially since he narrates. LOVE him.Started listening to Tim Curry narrate Lirael, the second book in the Abhorsen trilogy. I'm still debating whether to continue on with Clariel, etc. after I finish the original trilogy (because apparently Nix has decided to continue the series with at least five or six books total).
I haven't been around much the last few days. I've finished Wolves of the Calla (awesome), The Hot Rock (entertaining) and have a couple of hours left of Wallbanger (silly). All very different.
I finished A Case of Redemption by Adam Mitzner. A halfway decent legal thriller. Now I'm starting up Catch-22. I had a debate about starting Ulysses because today is June 16th and the entire 800 pages revolves around Leopold Bloom and his walk around Dublin on June 16th, 1904. Just not ready to dive in just yet, but to anyone celebrating the book today, and I understand there are celebrations around the world - Cheers!
Just started listening to Finders Keepers by Stephen King. Will Patton is the perfect match for a reader for this series!
Today I bought and then listened to Two Tales of the Iron Druid chronicles by Kevin Hearne and read by the fabulous Luke Daniels. One tale is a prequel to the first book in the series while the second happens during the time of Hammered when Gronuale is beginning her training as a druid. Enjoyed both. It only whet my appetite for more. Anyone know when the next full novel will be released?
I finished Eleanor and Park and surprisingly loved it! 5* I was expecting it to be a cheesy YA romance but it wasn't. The language was a bit abrasive mostly in the beginning with one particular character. It does fit the character and the timeframe (80's).

I finished How to Start a Fire and liked it; I'm a sucker for quirky characters and dysfunctional families, and this book had some of each.Started my first Richard Russo book Nobody's Fool; I was going to try listening at a faster speed but the slow narration just seems to fit the small town narrative, so sticking with 1x for now :)

I really like Richard Russo and haven't read/listened to Nobody's Fool. How is the narrator?
Just finished reading The Shell Seekers and thoroughly enjoyed it - gave it 5* which I rarely do. I was bummed that Audible only had it in Abridged, though.
Janice wrote: "I'm starting Among Others."I really liked it, and I thought Katherine Kellgren as always was fabulous. It's sort of about how books really can save someone's life.
Janice wrote: "I'm starting Among Others."I really enjoyed that, read the print and then listened to it.
Thanks. I'm enjoying it so far. I slowed the speed from 1.25 to 1 to absorb the Welsh accent Katherine Kellgren is using. I may speed it back up once I'm used to it.

I loved The Secret Life of Bees too. Others you might like could be Looking for Me and Saving CeeCee Honeycutt and also Moon Over Manifest.
I finished Son of No One, the most recent in the Dark Hunters series by Sherilyn Kenyon. This one was a miss for me. It had potential with a few cool characters and unique situations that added up to... a bit of a mess. I keep on with this series to see how a few storylines will end up, but it just keeps getting messier and I feel less satisfied at the end. A book or two more like this last one and I may give up.

I like the narration;Ron McLarty isn't familiar to me but I see lots of his books on Audible. His voice is a good fit for the small town feel of the story and he's managing many characters with distinct voices, none of which are grating to me!

I'll have to check out those other Russo books; it's funny that he's most famous for Empire Falls but it seems like his other books are the ones people mention as favorites.
I loved Eleanor and Park, too, as well as Fangirl, also narrated by Rebecca Lowman. I was surprised to love both so much as well, as I'm not typically a YA reader! I haven't read her adult books yet, though. I worry I may not like them as much for some reason.Heidi (Yup. I love Richard Russo, too. You might also enjoy Andre Dubus who writes about similar themes - academics and townies living, loving, and sometimes self-destructing in small New England towns. Alina wrote: I could so picture this one as a romantic comedy movie..."This is SO true - I can totally see this as a movie. It's making me chuckle. Just what I needed.

I'm adding Looking for Me and Moon over Manifest to my to-read list. Both look great.
My daughter (rising high school sophomore) finally has a "good" book to read for summer reading - The Secret Life of Bees. For once, reading won't be torture!
I'm adding Lonesome Dove series to my list as well. The TV mini series is one of my all time favorites. I never realized there were more books than just that one.

I have not read "Nobody's Fool" yet, but I enjoyed his Pulitzer winning book "Empire Falls" a lot. He is a great storyteller.
I am wrapping up Stoner today. Such a great writing and narrative; even though, the story is so bleak. Next in line is The Woman Upstairswhich has many mixed reviews. some people loved it and most people hated it. I just have to give it a try since this is the first time I am reading Claire Messoud, the author.
Janice wrote: "Thanks. I'm enjoying it so far. I slowed the speed from 1.25 to 1 to absorb the Welsh accent Katherine Kellgren is using. I may speed it back up once I'm used to it."I loved it too though none of my friends did. Glad to hear you're enjoying it.
Stoner was great. I forget who the narrator was, but I thought he did a great job. I'll be curious to hear what you think about The Woman Upstairs. I was not able to get through The Emperor's Children (in print) so I've been reluctant to try another of her books. Sara wrote: "I am wrapping up Stoner today. Finished Dead Line by Chris Ewan narrated by Simon Vance....This book was confusing and not as good as this authors other books. I kept hoping it would start to make more sense and the story would come together for me but it never did. I should have DNF’d. Simon Vance’s narration was wonderful as always!I will probably start again on Wild Wood
Sue wrote: "Stoner was great. I forget who the narrator was, but I thought he did a great job. I'll be curious to hear what you think about The Woman Upstairs. I was not able to get through The Emperor's Child..."The narrator of Stoner was "Robin Field" and he did a great job. I just began "The woman Upstairs" and so far (about 2 chapters) it really slow going and very negative self portrait. Hopefully, it will be more uplifting as the story continues :0)
I finished Agatha Raisin and the Deadly Dance. I hadn't been in the mood for Agatha and so read most of it a chapter every-other night. I got in the mood to finish about three chapters from the end. I like Beaton's storytelling but Agatha requires the right reader attitude to be appreciated.
I finished Clockwork by Philip Pullman, narrated by Anton Lesser. It was pretty good, but not even in the same stratosphere as His Dark Materials or even Sally Lockhart. I'm so impatient for The Book of Dust I could explode. And the short story The Collectors released earlier this year did nothing but make me even more excited. I love Bill Nighy and hope he narrates more titles in the future!
Robin wrote: "Finished The Cuckoo's Calling, loved it, and I think I would have appreciated it just as much if I hadn't known Galbraith was a pseudonym. I really liked Strike and his assistant (d..."The British author, best known for her iconic Harry Potter series, is returning with a new book in the Cormoran Strike crime & mystery series. Like the other Cormoran Strike novels, the new book will be published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. This is the third book in the series.
The new book is titled Career of Evil, and it will hit bookstores on October 20 in the U.S. and October 22 in the U.K.
Finished Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography and really enjoyed it overall, very entertaining, humor and serious stuff mixed. Now on to 1984 which I haven't read since '82, my sophomore year in high school. Our English teacher thought it was a hoot we were the class of 1984 so he felt required to assign the book to us.

I'm listening to Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies, it's interesting, but a little dry.
