(view spoiler)[ I can't believe it...I really can't. After reading my first book this month, I was put in a reading slump. I was really scared that this book would be disappointing but I can't believe how much I'm loving this book. Lately, I've been judging books more harshly. Not because I want to hate them but because I've read so many that my expectations for every story has been higher than before. But this...has everything! I love the writing. I've suddenly become a fan of Renee Ahdieh just by her writing. The story is gripping for every chapter and so far, I love all the characters especially Shazi and Despina. Shazi is simply amazing and what I want for a heroine. She's driven but careful and calculating. I love how she doesn't let her temper or urges get the better of her. I love her humor too. She says whatever she wants even if it's an insult and finds a way to make it funny. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Well I finally found a character I didn't like: General al-Khoury. I don't like his threats to Shazi and is it just me or was did he seem to want Shazi dead that second night? I'm worried about Jahandar too. That book is definitely bad news. Jalal was cute and I hope he becomes Shazi's ally. I actually enjoyed Agib's story. I can't wait to hear more of the Aladdin story! I love Despina and I love Shazi even more after every chapter! (hide spoiler)]

Pg 101 to Pg 167
(view spoiler)[ Things are definitely getting more intense. I was kind of confused on the Silk Cord chapter. So the soldiers came to kill her in the morning. Then Khalid and Jalal came to stop them and rescue Shazi. But then why did Shazi say that Khalid tried to have her killed that morning? What do you guys think of Tariq and what happening on his side of the story? I admire them for wanting to save Shazi. But they're sacrificing so much, even Reza. Shazi's probably going to fall for Khalid. What happens then? Tariq would have sacrificed so much and fought her but what if she chooses Khalid? This is going to get really messy. What do you guys think was wrong with Despina before Shazi was poisoned? Do you guys think she tried to poison Shazi or was it General al-Khoury? I really like Musa! What do you guys think are her unique abilities? Omg! Is that a magic carpet?! Soo...who's fault do you guys think got them really in trouble at that market? I can't believe Shazi said that but I was very proud of her for saying it. Ha! And my goodness those last two pages from 166-167. I completely melted reading those two pages. It's soo hard not to read on! Btw, I wrote a lot. I just kinda kept writing whatever popped up in my mind.

Tariq is rash and irresponsible, he completely disregards the consequences of his actions, he doesn't really see or listen then he makes wild assumpitions and dives in headfirst without thinking. He may be acting out of love, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous for himself and everyone around him. I hope one day he gets badly burned by this attitude.
Khalid isn't really doing anything to make himself likeable. What is with acting like he was backstabbed and pretending an apology when she asked what I think is a pretty legitimate question? She didn't even ask in a particularly accusatory way. There'd better be something in this curse that forces everyone to act like an ass whenever the dead girls are mentioned (hide spoiler)]

I admit that such an ending is in keeping with the theme, but since I'm not Khalid, I'll not get the sequel just because of that (hide spoiler)]

Ok! I'm up to The Old Man and the Well (view spoiler)[ I'm enjoying this a lot so far! I like that Shazi seems to be sassy while we also know that she's scared she's gonna die. She's brave but cautious and I like that she's trying to learn things about the caliph that will help her in her endeavour.

HOWEVER, I am very excited to find out what is going on behind the scenes. We/Shazi/the public are clearly given a very basic reason/view of the caliph. He's been killing wives every morning, but WHY?
And there's magic, shown by Shazi's dad, yet we didn't hear about it again for like 10 chapters when Musa is all like, "girl, you have the gift, but I'm not gonna tell you anything about it okbyee".

AND the prologue! WHAT IS MAKING THE CALIPH KILL THE GIRLS. Is he cursed? Does it have something to do with the way his mom was killed? WHAT IS HAPPENING!!??! (hide spoiler)]

65% done (view spoiler)[ I really like this, but I also feel like a little something's off for me. I feel like the different plot points belong in totally separate books, tbh, and although I do like Shazi and some of the other characters in her plot line, but I feel like I need more character development. I like to start out with knowing more about why someone is the way they are and then learning how they change and what they go through to get to their final form. We don't really know anything about Shazi's upbringing, so where did she get her sass from? I feel like she seems to be slightly less well-off than Tariq, yet she seems like she is able to do snob really easily ("How dare you order me around" and all the times she says basically the same thing as this with different words), but who knows because all we know about her dad right now is that he's a librarian doing some pretty questionable things with magic he clearly shouldn't be playing with.

That being said, I'm still just over halfway done, so I'm going to keep my final opinions until the end of the book, obviously. :P (hide spoiler)]

Finished (view spoiler)[ Ok, that last bit of the book there was intense and I'm glad we finally found out what the heck was going on! I sort of guessed that there was a curse, but it bothered me that we didn't find out for sure until the end.

Also, I with Tariq would just listen to Shazi. I found it so annoying that he was like, "Ohhh she must have Stockholm Syndrome, she can't have possibly learned to like this guy, I have to rescue her even though she legit went there to kill him, and something must have changed her mind, but I don't care, nooo, she's not smart enough to know her own mind." I think he was my least favorite character. (hide spoiler)]

I wish the magic system had been explained better, and that the story arcs had been more connected/developed. We mainly saw Shazi, then when it switched to the others, and way more time had passed but nothing was really explained all that much. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't totally live up to the hype (for me), but I did enjoy it! (hide spoiler)]

Okay, I'm a bit confused. I think I had such high expectations for this. The world confuses me a little but it's still early, my hopes are still high! I don't really like the king? This plan seems a bit silly for Shazi but doesn't it seem a little rapey? I know she's letting him but - still, she's kind of doing it to survive vs because she wants to.
