Hey everyone! Hope your first day of summer is going well. I will be posting in response to my first book as I read, not just at the end. You can do whichever you please. The ultimate goal is for you to read this summer and enjoy reading! Fill me in on what you are reading if you get a chance. Hopefully we all get some great book ideas from each other!
By the way, I could post a pic of the book I'm reading by clicking on the "add book/author" link right above the comment box. Then you don't have to type your book title and author.
I'll be posting my first response soon!

Kimberlee Chowning | 9 comments Bunheads by Sophie Flack

Yay! First book done for the start of my summer break! I really did find this book too interesting to put down even for a snack break.
Bunheads by Sophie Flack.
However, this story revolves around the life of a 'ballerina'. Well, the main character, Hannah Ward, doesn't even want to be called that. She claims that "Ballerinas are the stars of the company," whereas she is "a dancer in the corps de ballet, just one of the dozen girls who dance in graceful union each night." Hannah is solely devoted to her life in the Manhattan Ballet Company, yet when she meets Jacob...Her mind is thrown to the wind, where she must figure out if she wants to stay confined to her ballet or live a normal teenage life in the world she pays little attention to. As the cover states, "How do you choose between your first love and your first solo?"
The author had actually spent 9 years in the New York City Ballet and this happens to be her first novel. She writes from a first person point of view and separates the book by the performance seasons. This story gives you a true look into the life of a performer. You can see the struggle of weight loss and body image, the rigorous rehearsals, and the competition between the dancers for solo spots. I really loved this book and can't wait to see more from Sophie Flack. If you're interested in slight romance and wanting a look into the life of a dancer, give this book a go.

First book review for the summer...Hope that was a good start to this! Now to make a dent into my stack of books that are on my floor since I ran out of room in my bookshelf. :D

Just finished Murder in Baker Street. A good one to help me get to the new Sherlocks on PBS. This is a collection of short stories based on the Sherlock character but by various authors. I love mysteries.

Im really liking this book so far! It is about a guy named Lincoln whose job consists of monitoring company emails and sending out warnings to be sure all emails remain appropriate. There are also two girls, Beth and Jennifer, who we get to know through their emails back and forth. They don't know Lincoln, and Lincoln doesn't know them, until he starts reading and becoming intrigued by their emails. This book goes back and forth in POV: one chapter will be emails back and forth between the two girls. The next chapter will be in third person focusing on Lincoln's thoughts, job, and life in general.

The emails between Beth and Jennifer have made me laugh out loud multiple times. These two girls are hilarious! So far, Jennifer reminds me of myself (no, I'm not trying to say that I'm exceptionally funny) because of the way she thinks and worries so much. I have pasted an excerpt below from one of Jennifer's emails to Beth as an example of how well Rowell uses language to develop her characters:

“Speaking of my mother, I foolishly told her last weekend that Mitch and I had been fighting about having a baby. And she sighed—have you heard her sigh? It’s like a balloon dying—and said, “That’s how it starts. You better watch yourself.”
“It,” of course, is divorce. Which she’s sure I inherited along with her straight teeth and her evil apologies. She’s just waiting. She keeps poking my marriage with a toothpick. Almost done!”

Excerpt From: Rowell, Rainbow. “Attachments.” Penguin, 2014-12-16. iBooks.

I'm wondering if Lincoln is going to fall for one of these girls...

Cheyenne Brown | 6 comments The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
For starters, I knew the book was going to be intense whereas it was written by Stephen King, but it wasn't like I thought it would be. Granted the book did keep me on edge with every adventure he had written for the character. I was overall satisfied with this book and would recommended it to people who like a challenging adventure even if it may be accidental.
The books plot tells the story of Trisha McFarland who may have been nine years old but was big for her age. She had been hiking with her mother and brother when she got lost in the woods and proceeded to try to find them again. With every nail-biting turn, you could practically feel the emotions that she was feeling with the amount of detail King wrote in. The plot was relatable in some places to people who have been in the woods or just the outdoors and that don't like bugs.

I just finished Attachments. This ending is much more pleasing than Rowell's Eleanor and Park ending, even though I couldn't put Eleanor and Park down, finishing it in one night, while this book took me a bit.

I don't want to spoil anything in case someone else wants to read this book, so I won't say much. I just highly recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and a quick pace read.

Lilly Tedrick | 2 comments Eleanor and Park
My first summer reading book was "Eleanor and Park" written by Rainbow Rowell. For starters I read this book in one day. I couldn't put it down. I have been told how 'cute' this love story is so picking it up I expected something super happy. As I got through this book the first word that pops to my head is not 'cute', maybe something like painfully sad. It is terribly obvious Eleanor has so many issues within herself but, it's amazing to see how Park makes her feel alive, and not just surviving. The ending is spectacular but also overwhelming. It's such a great book that kept me interested the whole time. Of course I suggest it to anyone who has not read it.

Sierra Smith | 4 comments My first summer reading book that I have finished is Rival by Penelope Douglas. This is the third book of a Fall Away series. This book will definitely have you on the edge of your seat, thinking about what the two main characters, Madoc Carruthers and Fallon Pierce (step siblings), will do next. These two love each other but do not tell each other or even give each other a sense that they do all the way through the series until now when they explain their feelings to each other after finding out that their parents are getting divorced because Madocs father has been having an affair with his bestfriends mother. I would definitely recommend this to any matured person.. I am going to continue the rest of this series.

Jake Moore | 4 comments I just finished American Sniper. It is now one of my favorite books. This book is about the late Chris Kyle a Navy Seal who served from 1999 to 2009. He has the most recorded kills in United States military history. It is written by Chris Kyle himself but with the help of others to put it together. This is a book I highly recommend this book to all readers.

Makenzie Phillips | 4 comments Paper Towns The first book I finished this summer was Paper Towns by John Green. Quentin Jacobsen and Margo Roth Spiegelman's relationship is so unique because for most of the book, there isn't really one there. They were childhood friends but grew apart. When Margo leaves, Q's need to find her consumes his life. I loved the character development of Quentin and how you only get to know the idea of Margo Roth Spiegelman, never really the character herself. I liked this book, but was kind of disappointed in the ending. I would however recommend this book to other readers.

I felt as if I was with Trisha every page I turned. A classic I might add.

Mandy Gerlach | 6 comments Book one-Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks. I hated the ending so much! I have read several of Sparks's books and I have loved each and ever one...until this one. It has one tragedy after another that will definitely pull at your heart strings. Although I definitely loved the ending message from the main character, it was very motivating.

Holly Young | 2 comments Book One- No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale. This definitely became one of my favorite books that I've ever read. It has a lot of mystery, but it's entertaining. Sixteen year old Kippy Bushman's best friend, Ruth, is murdered and found in a corn field, leaving her family and the usually non-violent town in fear. Kippy doesn't think that the supposed murderer did it and is trying to find out who really did it. It gives you a really good mind movie going and some parts keep you on the edge of your seat (if that's even possible for a book). The end definitely surprised me. Overall, I would recommend this book!

Sydney Wallace | 5 comments My first book is Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I found this book really interesting and it caught my full attention. There were many different qualities to this book that I enjoyed. From the future like setting, to the very well written plot. The plot of this story reminds me of the Hunger Games, with the setting being similar and the concept of two different classes of people battling it out with one another. In the very beginning of the book you learn what places people into these two different classes, blood. In this world there are types of blood colors and your blood color determines what class you are in. The two blood colors are red and silver. People with silver blood have special abilities, which are similar to super powers. however anyone who has red blood is powerless and normal. The actual plot starts when the main character names Mare Barrow discovers that she has the power of a silver blood even though her blood is red. This causes major chaos and puts Mare into deep trouble. To me this book was very enjoyable and I would love to read it again. My favorite part was the huge plot twist at the end.

Sarah Wallace | 6 comments Branded
Book 1- The first book that I read Branded was different than most books. Set off in a dark world controlled by the commander, who kills anybody who opposed him. In his mind they're are seven deadly sins which are the reason for the downfall of the society. These sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. The main character of the book Lexi Hamiltion gets taken for breaking one of the sins lust, and gets sent to the hole, the home of the branded where she must learn to survive. Overall I enjoyed the book as it was a fast pace read. The story had you at the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to other readers.

Terra Wichterman | 4 comments Book one- Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. This book is about two twin sisters, Cath and Wren Avery who have been by each others side their entire life's. But, when it's time for them to go off to college, Wren starts to go off in a more independent direction leaving Cath stuck in their old childhood memories. I can relate to this book in many ways starting with the fact that Cath is a fan girl. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's a great mix of comedy and romance with some seriousness in it too. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.

This was one of those novels that I started reading early on at the beginning of last year. Do to multiple reason couldn't finish, and early this summer I had that chance. The ending was nothing I hoped or satisfy with. But overall I give the book 8/10. If you love mysteries that are amazingly written then I recommend.

message 28: by Annie (new)

Annie Allen | 4 comments The first I read this summer is called The Wedding Gift by Lucy Kevin. The book was very good. I personally love weddings and am a hopeless romantic. The book starts out with a woman named Julie Delgado. She once used to own her own restaurant. The business went downhill due to a bad review from a well-known chef, Andrew Kyle. Later on, Julie is hired as the caterer at a wedding venue, the Rose Chalet. For her first food tasting, the bride's brother comes to the appointment in her place. Julie is astonished when she finds out that Andrew Kyle is there to taste her food. There is an undeniable chemistry between the two. Julie's taste for food is very unusual and catches Andrew's eye. After many fights, disagreements, and awkward situations the two inebitsbly fall in love.

I would give this book a nine out of ten. The plot moved very quickly and didn't leave much room for wondering or predictions. Lucy Kevin had a good vision for the storyline however, stronger vocabulary would have conveyed the story in a more effective way.

The Wedding Gift

It starts off when john is in the first grade and ends when he is in middle school. he befriends a kid that he used to bully when he was child as he goes threw many obstacles in his life. I would rate this book 7 out of 10.

message 30: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Fordyce | 3 comments The first book I read is called Hit and Run, by Lurlene McDaniel. This book is a thriller and also a mystery. It is written somewhat like a journal, in the point of view of the four main characters. The plot may seem a little confusing at first, due to the fact that the characters are connected at different points in the story.
The story is mainly about two different girls, Analise and Laurie. Laurie had been asked by one of the most popular seniors at her school, Quin, to go to a party with him, and after the party on their way home, they hit a deer. Nothing major.
Analise was a normal girl, she had a boyfriend named Jeremy, and they were very happy. One night, she went somewhere to babysit. She had to stay later than normal, which wasn't a big deal, but on her bike-ride home, she goes missing.
I really enjoyed this book. I would rate it 8/10. If you like short fast paced mysteries, I recommend this book to you.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. The book has 50 chapters that are separated into three parts that are filled with scriptural truth and reflect upon common experiences of fear and doubt. This book is to point readers in Gods direction. Part 1- God the Father
Part 2- God the Son Part 3- God the Holy Spirit
-Part 1- This part talks about How God is the creator. He is patient, kind, loving, and unchanging.-Part 2- This part talks about how He died on the cross for us.He who had no sin died for our sins. -Part 3-This part talks about how He is the way. He comforts , teaches and leads us.-If you enjoy reading about God or would like to learn more about him I would recommend this book.

You would expect a boring story; with no climax or plot at all. But it has it's ups and downs, and you can relate to the normal farm family life. It is so well written that you can sympathize with the Langdon family. Perfect, beautiful, amazing book. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series

Valarie now has to deal with the choice that her boyfriend has made and pick up the pieces that he has left. As she goes back to school to complete her senior year, she learns to make a mends with everyone this choice has impacted.

Noah Armocida | 6 comments Tears of a Tiger
The first book I read this summer was Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper. This is the first book of the Hazelwood High trilogy. The story is about the tragic car crash that killed Robert Washington and driver Andy Jackson. Through out the story Andy is trying to cope with the fact that he thinks its his fault that one of his closes friend is dead. The only good part in his life he feels is basketball. His relationship with his parents is also a struggle he goes through. I strongly recommend this book because the main characters are around our age and you can connect with the characters easier.

Lyndsey Valentine | 6 comments The first book I read this summer was An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. I'd like to start off by saying, anything by John Green is a favorite of mine. I love his writing; this book being no exception. The story follows Colin, a child prodigy, and Hassan, his friend when they begin a road trip after graduation because Colin shows signs of depression. They end up in a small town in Tennessee called Gutshot. Here, both boys learn much more then they intended to. This book makes you think. About relationships mostly, but also about the good your doing in the world, and whether that good is only for yourself.

Crank by Ellen Hopkins was a read I'd recommend to anyone and everyone. The force that Hopkins brings is unstoppable, and some of the poems brought chills to my bones. Excellent masterpiece.
My only complaint was there wasn't enough to devour, to understand the full consequences of the "monster" that is described in these pages. The poems make it a fast pace read and your mind feels it has little time to examine what is placed in front of you.
Other than that I'd give this book a 10/10.

Joshua Casteel | 3 comments The Screwtape Letters
One of my new favorite books by C.S. Lewis. The time is set in WWII and there is one person known only as "The Victim". In the story, two demons (Wormwood & Screwtape) try to push the victim into giving in to material possessions and things worldly. If you are a Christian I highly suggest this book because it makes you think about what really is the oppression around you.
