It is the story of three brave children. It is set in the 1840's during the Irish famine. uring this time, everyone looked like skeletons, had sunken cheeks, narrow lips and deep circles beneath their eyes. From this novel, we can really understand how some people survived this horrific time in Irish history. It's extremely moving and easy to relate to. All events are described very well and detailed by the author, Marita Conlon-McKenna. The storyline of the novel is well thought up and well put together. I believe it is imporant for children at this age to understand the history and struggle that some people have faced in other countries. with this book there is lots of scope for cross curricular links and would pose as a perfect class novel. The story of this incredible journey, as the children overcome trjedy and famine provides children with a understanding and appreciation for the world we live in today.
