Wow that was fast, I just checked it out on Amazon and some of the older covers have an egg shaped ship in the background. Thank you so much for your help.

I am looking for a book I read in high school, so 93-96 I don’t think it was an older publish date, the story had virtual reality in it. It was hardcover and I got it out of my school library.
**Spoilers for those of you who care about endings**
It was set in a dystopian future where robots had taken all the jobs and people were left to sections where they, well I’m not sure I remember what they did.
But these group of friends get this invitation to do something and they travel to a place where they have virtual reality machine or program. So they go to this world (in the machine) and spend a day there, farming and exploring. One day someone would say, “I wish so and so were here, they could tell us what plant this is.” And the next day that person would show up and the apartment saying they’d been assigned there.
It goes on and on for a bit. Jump to the end on their last virtual world or what they think is the computer takes them to a real planet where they’ve been sent to repopulate and have a life of sorts.
I remember on the cover was a drawing of an egg shaped ship, I seem to remember egg for some reason. And the picture of a girl in a white jump suit looking out.
I’d like to read it again.
