Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments One of the most popular reviewers on Goodreads, Dr Nataliya, will be discussing her favorite Mieville novel, Embassytown with us--starting March 4.

We can use this thread to clock in, get to know one anther (if we don't already), get stoked, and post material relevant to our upcoming discussion.

pearl (fruitslee) | 5 comments Oh boy. Unfortunately I slipped through the cracks with TCAC discussion but I'm going to make time for this one. I loved Embassytown, it will be a re-read for me, and I'm looking forward to what I might discover the second time around!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Wonderful, Pearl, and may I say that it's very nice to meet you!

Cecily | 301 comments Hello, I'll be joining in.

I read The Scar last year and was disappointed, but I recently read TC&TC with this group and thought it very good. Fingers crossed for Embassytown...

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Oh, good good good!

I enjoyed the discussion of TC&TC so it will be nice to see new people plus the old crowd joining in with Embassytown. :)

..and you kept things going nicely over at TC&TC, Cecily, so i'm glad to see you'll be along for the next one.

We may make a Mievillian of you yet... ;)

Cecily | 301 comments Traveller wrote: "...We may make a Mievillian..."

I want to be one... I'm just not quite there yet. ;)

Robert Delikat (imedicineman) | 54 comments T,
I received an invite to Embassytown and I think it disappeared before I answered the question about participating. Maybe I did or not but this is confirmation that I'll join in.

Frankly, I was not taken with the last selection and I've gotten pretty picky about what I'll read these days. There's just too much great stuff out there I haven't gotten to yet. I'll give this one a shot though.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Robert, even if you end up not liking it so much, come and join for the company- it will be great having you around!

After Embassytown we'll be taking a bit if a break from our CM reading, so if you're getting a bit tired of him, don't worry, we're taking a breather in April/May.

Robert Delikat (imedicineman) | 54 comments Thank you and sounds good.

Annie (aschoate) | 78 comments I've started through my first read and should be ready for chapter discussions when they get here. What can I say, I'm a dedicated CM fan.

That you are, Annie, that you are! In fact, i think you have the honor of being our very first member. :) (except for the 2 founder mods, of course).

Well, it's good to have such a dedicated Mievillian in our ranks.
We really must arrange an author interview with CM this year, you know.

Nataliya | 378 comments Hello to all the participants in 'Embassytown' reread! The time is getting close, and by this Sunday I plan to post the threads for the reread (I'm not in too much of a hurry since we have plenty of time, and my very busy month at work as well as the miserable flu that knocked me down are all winding down).

I'm excited to revisit Miéville sci-fi world! See you all on March 4th.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Whoo-hooo! Hope you're feeling a lot better by now, Nataliya!

Nataliya | 378 comments Traveller wrote: "Whoo-hooo! Hope you're feeling a lot better by now, Nataliya!"

Thanks, Trav! I'm not completely recovered yet but finally I'm able to function. And I'm ready to put this functionality to full use (after a night shift tonight and a slep break tomorrow during the day).

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Ugh, a night shift is the pits for recovery from the 'flu, but i guess you gotta do what you gotta do, eh?

Well all the best, i hope it's a quiet night and that the lil' babies will decide to stay inside their nice and cozy snug little place there in the darkness for tonight, and decide to leave wanting to pop out into the world until tomorrow, he he.

Cecily | 301 comments I'm about half way through and it is so... wonderful. I'm reading it slowly and savouring it. I look forward to the discussion.

And I hope you're continuing to recover, Nataliya.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it, Cecily! I can't wait to see your take on it.

Andrea This is probably my favourite CM. Have started my reread in anticipation.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Tim wrote: "I'm new to goodreads, but really looking forward to joining in this discussion! Read TC&TC last year, and it forced me to sit up and pay attention to contemporary SF. Wasn't so convinced by Krake..."

Welcome, Tim! Both to Goodreads and to Mievillians. I hope you'll enjoy visiting here, and looking forward to having some good discussions with you. :)

@ Andrea : Oh, I'd be so glad if you had the time to join in, Andrea! :)

Phil James Hi, I'm joining the read for Embassytown, I'm starting tonight (sun 3rd) I've read a few before e.g. Perdido, The Scar, IronCouncil, King Rat, Kraken and City and City, but not this one, so far.
My favourite is Perdido Street Station, the first one I read.

Mosca Dr. Nataliya wrote:"...I'm not in too much of a hurry since we have plenty of time..."

That sounds very good to me, Nataliya. A slow read fits my own very-distracted mental weather and life pace ATM. :)

message 22: by Kris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kris (krisrabberman) I'm not sure whether I can fit this in, but I am going to try! So good to see you Nataliya et al. :)

Nataliya | 378 comments The first discussion thread is up! (pages 1-40; Kindle 0-12%).

The next one will follow tomorrow - I need to fit in some medical reading tonight, so I will start only with one thread today.

Tim, Andrea, Mosca, Phil and Kris - so excited to see you guys here!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Hey guys, it's lovely to see all of you here! I don't really have time to read this now, but since a lot of us are pressed for time, but coming along nevertheless, I'm going to try as well. I couldn't forgo such excellent company as this. :)

Time schmime. We'll manage somehow. :)

Cecily | 301 comments Traveller wrote: "...since a lot of us are pressed for time, but coming along nevertheless, I'm going to try as well..."

Just be grateful it's SO much shorter than Perdito Street Station. ;)

Hey, we have a month, don't we? That should be plenty of time for a slow leisurely read. No need to rush, especially since I'm slow at posting the threads.

Cecily wrote: "Just be grateful it's SO much shorter than Perdito Street Station. ;)"

My Kindle version claims this is only 345 pages (but Kindle versions always seem shorter). I read it over 2 nights the first time, I think.

I'm useless at the internet. I can't even believe everything I write on the internet.

Ian "Marvin" Graye OK, I bought the book today. I'll start as soon as I read and review my Pamuk.

message 34: by Ian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ian "Marvin" Graye P.S. I'm really excited by the stories escaping this group about how good the book is.

For anyone who didn't see it, I placed a link to a podcast of an interview with China in the online folder (?) a few days ago. He has been in Australia promoting Railsea.

Darn you, Cecily! You've convinced me on Embassytown. Should I believe you since you're on the internet? You are interrupting my Proust dreaming!

Nataliya | 378 comments @ Ian - awesome. Can't wait to see your input on the discussion threads :)

@ Aloha - Don't believe anything you read on the internet. That includes this statement.

Nataliya | 378 comments Oh, and the second discussion thread is up! Come discuss the Language!

Ian "Marvin" Graye Nataliya, I don't know how you can do it, but the currently reading for the group is still showing on my screen as TC&TC.

If it is the same for you, are you able to insert details of Embassytown and the timeframe?

I can't do it, because I'm no longer a moderator.

Nataliya | 378 comments @ Ian - thanks for pointing that out. I fixed it.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Oops, apologies for that. Thanks for fixing it...hope it didn't give you too much trouble fiddling with it, Nataliya, I know you're busy.

I forgot at first to fix that with the switchover to the previous read as well, tsssk.

Nah, I figured it out; the menu makes it pretty self-explanatory.

Welcome, Jim; so nice to see you here! I can't wait to see your input in the discussion.

Kris (krisrabberman) Jim, it's so good to see you. I was just going to write you a message to see how you are. Hoping you are well!

message 45: by Jim (new)

Jim (neurprof58) | 21 comments Thanks so much for the kind words, Nataliya and Kris! I am just beginning to feel better after an extremely difficult period in my life. Doctor’s orders, I just have to be careful to limit activities until my energy level gets better, and the headaches and other problems are more manageable. My circumstances are definitely improving, and I am optimistic that my health will improve as well.

With that said, I am REALLY looking forward to some quality time with wonderful friends on GR, and in these discussions. I truly appreciate all the steadfast friend support from both of you and from many others on GR – I love you all! I am optimistic about my future, and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

message 46: by Kris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kris (krisrabberman) Sending love and friendship your way as always, Jim! :)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 1850 comments Jim! What a nice surprise! Although I haven't joined the discussions yet, I plan to soon, so you will still have someone behind you to keep the rearguard up.

Kris, it's nice to see you popping in here as well!

I hope that we'll soon see more of you both!

Jim, I'm so glad to see that you are doing better! Health issues are difficult, but I hope that everything, including your health, will be getting much better. I'll join Kris in sending all the good thoughts your way!

message 49: by Jim (new)

Jim (neurprof58) | 21 comments Kris and Nataliya, Thanks So Much for the love and friendship and all the good thoughts! Your kindnesses are, as always, very much appreciated.

Traveller, thanks so much for your greetings and well-wishes also! You have been a great and loyal friend, and I really appreciate your efforts in organizing this wonderful group, and continuing to contribute even with your frantically busy schedule.

I know that all of you are extremely busy, and Nataliya, I was really sorry to hear about your struggles with the horrible flu of this year. It means so much to me that you take the time to send your greetings and well-wishes. You are all awesome!

Nataliya | 378 comments Discussion for Part 2 and Part 3 is up! (Also known as the final set-up before the shite goes down)
