Angelica Thompson | 134 comments what is that smell am I the only one completely infatuated with it? whenever i get a new book the first thing I do is smell it! is that weird?? haha

message 2: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) I like that smell, too. I don't think it's weird that you're completely infatuated with it. It's one of the reasons I'd never use an e-reader.

message 3: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) A NEW book? Sure. Unfortunately for me I'm allergic to some kind of mildew that grows in older. Honestly, I can even identify the smell that I know will AUTOMATICALLY give me a severe throat cold if I so much as touch the book then rub my nose... thank GODS for eReaders.

message 5: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) lol It sucked WAY worse when I was younger and didnt know what kept giving me these damned throat colds. Hahahaha. Took me a few years to realize.

message 6: by Emily (last edited Feb 08, 2013 03:56PM) (new)

Emily (emilydodd221) New books don't smell that great, but I love the smell of really old books. I play violin and my violin smells great.... coz it's totally OK to go round smelling violins

message 7: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) Psh, why not? I feel the same way about really old basements and cubby holes. I love that musty smell!

message 8: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilydodd221) Yeah, same. At least I'm not on my own here!

message 9: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) The internet. Making people realize that they're not the only weirdos around since the early 80s. Lovely. ^_^

Emily (emilydodd221) lol

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments There's just no replacement for the real thing! An ebook may contain all the words, but it can never give you the smell or the feel of a book.

message 12: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Thompson | 134 comments they should like take smells like this and like make it a fragrance or something haha...I propose they literally try to trap the smell in a bottle and then I sell I want the authentic smell!! haha

Kyle (Ignoble) @ANGELICA: I've been reading since as far back as I can remember. lol So like... age 6.

message 17: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Thompson | 134 comments my gosh you must have had a terrible childhood if you were always getting sick from reading haha

message 23: by Megan (new)

Megan (BlackStar4ever) | 34 comments New books dont really smell of much. I think i prefer to smell older books, theyve been hanled more and will have picked up more smells over the years. You cant beat an old musty book!!

message 24: by Jana (new)

Jana (jana367) The smell of old books are the BEST!

message 25: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra Juárez (isho13) I'm a book sniffer too. I love the smell of both new and old books, even if they're different. But I don't like the smell of magazines.

message 26: by Amelle (new)

Amelle (amellebooklover) | 7 comments THere is a used bookstore near my home called Gatsbys and it smells like heaven. Old books smell wonderful. This is why I don't love places like Barnes and Noble. No smell. Books should have that smell...

Angelica Thompson | 134 comments ok then it's official Book Sniffers around the world unite today!

message 31: by Laura (new)

Laura I love the smell of books old or new, its part of their character. Emily I play the cello and I smell it, oddly glad I am not the only one. ;)

message 32: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (thewoodsysort) Yankee Candle should consider making a "book sniffer" candle. Sounds like an untapped market, but I would surely invest!

message 33: by Lillian (new)

Lillian (lilliebear) Oh God, the smell of used books is amazing. Out here in Arizona we have Bookman's, and each location has some sort of smell, but the smallest one smells the best. I guess it's because all ofthe books are cramped into a confined space. I no longer feel weird, thanks guys! =P

message 34: by Kate (new)

Kate | 19 comments Love my kindle and I'd never go back, now that I have it! Before I had it, I thought kindle's were lame and couldn't possibly replace books for reasons like "how it feels", "how it smells" and of course "how it looks on my bookshelf when people visit". But my kindle changed that because of "how little I have to carry when I move", "I can pack a 1000 books on holiday in one bag", and "I can buy a book without going to a bookstore".
Disclaimer: Excuse all the" " I got a bit out of hand there!

could you imagine people sniffing you and telling you smell like book haha that would be amazing!!

message 41: by Kimi (new)

Kimi (hateeverybeautifulday) I read somewhere once that the reason books, older books in particular, smell so good is because the paper contains something called Vanillin, closely related to vanilla, and over time it smells better and better, which is why bookstores and libraries smell so great! I work in a bookstore, & smell is the best smell to start your day!

message 42: by Alice (new)

Alice | 13 comments I have to admit... I'm a book sniffer too!

message 45: by Chelsie (new)

Chelsie Motley (chelsiemotley) | 4 comments I'm definitely there with you. Sometimes I walk into Barnes and Noble just to engulf myself in the scent of coffee and new books.

message 46: by ipsit (new)

ipsit (ipsit_13) The way a book smells is as distinctive as the smell of earth when it rains for the first time after a dry hard summer...there is nothing like a smell of a new book or an old one for that that matter.

message 47: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Mugerwa (corrosivemind) Awww!!! I grew up reading very old books that had once belonged to my grandfather. It was the smell that attracted me especially. I would close my hands and breathe it in...that's the smell of the gates of imagination

message 48: by Brie ☾ (new)

Brie ☾ (midnightxreader) I love the way a book that's new smells. Like you should read it repeatedly so that you can make it smell used. :)

message 49: by Michael (new)

Michael (lovechild) | 280 comments Ahhh book smell, old or new i enjoy.
But it is the whole thing with books, the weight and feel of paper, looking at the cover over and over.
As other have said it great to have so many books on my phone and tablet but I will take a book any day.

message 50: by Emma (new)

Emma | 2 comments I love the smell of books! New and old.
