Fallen
discussion
Why does everybody hate this book?
Yeah I've heard the same thing as well concerning the Fallen series. For me personally I quite enjoyed reading all the books, I may have had some issues with it but not enough for me to hate it like everyone else seems too!
I've only read Fallen so far but I don't see why people hate it either. I enjoyed it. And I'd have to agree the only thing in common with Twilight is the love triangle but those are in almost every book nowadays.
I dont understande why people hate it i think its a great story and i love the characters. Fallen series is nothing like twilight at all, i dont see a resemblance at all. I agree with Nikki this story is darker and there is no weird sparkiling vampires, just really cool angels. I loved this series im on the third book and i just sped through the first book in a couple of days and same for the second one so now im trying to go slow because i dont want it to end. I love it!!!!!
I can't believe that people hate this book!! The entire series is one of my favorites! When I read this book, I don't think of twilight at all! I've read all of the books in this series a few times and believe me, they are nothing like Twilight! They are so much better! I love the writing style and the actual plot to this book, and I don't understand how it's possible to hate these books!
The first book is OK. I haven't read the 2nd one. But the third one...it's ok. Until the end. Too much taking tings from Bible and turning it upside down
As someone who didn't enjoy this book, I can say I didn't find it similar to Twilight. I just thought there wasn't a real love story, there was absolutely nothing to draw me as the reader into this so-called romance. The author tells us that Luce & Daniel have this epic love, but doesn't SHOW us. I like to fall in love along with my main characters, and it doesn't happen with this book. Also, I didn't like that just about everyone around Luce was a supernatural being. There need to be more humans for balance, in my opinion. Finally, there was very little plot line. It was more like a series of disconnected mis-adventures. I bought this book with high expectations and found it to be a real let down. But that's just me, different strokes for different folks...
I'd have to agree with Janese:)
also i loved the first book but was left disappointed, i could barely finish the 2nd book. I'm glad ppl enjoy, it's just not the book for me. Maybe it'll be a better movie!

I basically explain exactly what I didn't like in my review, it's not long but a little harsh. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
But to sum up I just don't enjoy knowing most of the story before the protagonist does. I find it makes reading the story tedius. The day-to-day events are fairly mundane, the characters have very little personality and, honestly, I never felt that Luce had very good motivation for her behaviour - at best it was just under-explained but at worst it was the author dragging her to each event that was supposed to happen without really finding a reason.
I just reread my review to think of what to say, so to add to my list of complaints I found it pretty forgettable and I don't even read enough urban fantasy to push it out of my memory. So, sorry I can't give you anything more specific about what I disliked.
i love the first one SOOO MUCH! but i lost interest when reading the second :/but now that I've finished both Paranormalcy and Firelight, ill probably re-read Torment and fall in love with Fallen all over again.
this is the book that got me to love reading, i would never rate this book poorly! :)

Arielle wrote: The whole story is basically about her not understanding why she is so in love with him... thats basically the ultimate story and if you read past the second book you find out, and it really gets deep..."Exactly!!! And maybe I am stupid but I only realized what was going on at the end and I was really shocked in a good way! And to answer to all the negative comments. I don't care who came up with the idea. The books were all great. Ok maybe I will be honest and say that I was bored in Torment but Passion and Rapture were amazing! I don't regret reading them and I like Daniel and Luce. And to those who say that Luce has no character, that's wrong. She doesn't remember who she really is and what she can do. She is confused and that was the point in all three first books.

"Erm I guess you didn't mean ALL negative comments because I don't give two shits how derrivative the novel is.
The problem is that confused protagonists are like a virus in YA fiction books. And more importantly being confused isn't a character trait, character traits should still exist in confused individuals.
I understand that first books have to work with the following ones and if they need to hold back a lot of things to make the following books work that's fine, but I don't want to read an empty shell for 400 pages just so I can get to the meat in the second book.
Samantha sure I understand what you mean and I do respect your opinion but well we can't all of us have similar taste in what we like. So I can only accept what you say but keep believing in what I believe.
I think that one of the problems that people have with it (and this is one problem I had with it) that Luce seems to be the usual YA heroin who's story is focused solely on the guys. Daniel was kind of an ass to her at first, but she was in love with him? That's not a very strong character, and some people are fed up with girls in books being so focused on "that one hot guy". Also, a lot of people pick up a paranormal romance for the paranormal part more than for the romance, but in this book the paranormal part wasn't very strong.Really it all just depends on the person, and what they were looking for in a book vs. what they found. People who like more romance-centered books probably like this one more. People who like more paranormal-center books probably like this one less.

Of course we all have opinions, I didn't appreciate the suggestion that my opinion of Luce having no characteristics was "wrong" just because she was confused so I felt the need to explain.
And anyway I don't expect my words to have a lot of weight here since I didn't read the rest of the books and of course a book should be judged on its own merit as well as how it fits into the series.
But, it is up to the first book to get people into the second book and it didn't work for me.
Samantha The Escapist wrote: I wouldn't be posting in a thread full of people who love the book if I wasn't willing to agree to disagree :P Of course we all have opinions, I didn't appreciate..."Well I am glad we can talk things out without creating a mess. In general I am against of judjing a book if I don't like it, which is rare because I read and like books easily. Don't know why. I think there aren't books that I find "bad" so like you I just felt the need to defend this one!
Maybe the words I've chosen were wrong but it's what came on my mind and I wrote without thinking much! So I apologize if I offended you. I don't do that on purpose.
Oh no worries, I wasn't offended.I also didn't mean judging so much in the negative way, I more meant in the qualifying, giving-a-star-rating kinda way.
I'm like that with movies, I find a reason to like almost all of them even if I wouldn't call a lot of them "good". But for some reason with books I can't really swallow it - I think probably because with movies I don't feel like I could do a better job but often with books I do. Sorry, pompous confession time lol.
Tiare wrote: "I think that one of the problems that people have with it (and this is one problem I had with it) that Luce seems to be the usual YA heroin who's story is focused solely on the guys. Daniel was kin..."For me, I think Tiare hit the nail on the head. First off, this is merely my opinion and not meant to offend anyone. I really really didn't like this book and not because it wasn't Lauren Kate's original idea (I wasn't even aware of that until now). This book felt really disjointed, lacking the development of relationships between characters that I only sort of connected with. It really bugged me that Luce was obsessed with Daniel when he treated her like garbage. I thought her parents were too harsh sending her to that institution and the PNR aspect was severely lacking. I get really bored with books that are relationship centric and that's what Fallen was for me. The intent for further development was there but it fell short. It probably doesn't help that I was reading some pretty amazing books at the time. Anyway, it's really about how a book makes an individual feel so no matter what, you're going to have people who love it or hate it.
Teiamarie wrote: "Tiare wrote: "I think that one of the problems that people have with it (and this is one problem I had with it) that Luce seems to be the usual YA heroin who's story is focused solely on the guys. ..."Do you remember which amazing books you were reading? Sorry to be off topic lol.
You know what? People hate, and that is a fact of life. People will always hate Twilight. People will always hate Fallen. That's just their problem. There's nothing us people, who have some decent sense, can do about it. Every person is entitled to their own opinion. But there's a line, and that line cannot be crossed. I love Twilight. And I love Fallen. I don't see why people rant about Fallen, and it has absolutely no connection whatsoever to Twilight, so I think people who say that are just digging too deep for an unnecessary flaw to uncover. You can hate it or love it, but that's my opinion.
And as for Twilight, I love Edward and I always will. I don't see why people call Bella a wimp or a weakling or any of those pathetic insults, and I just can't comprehend one bit why everyone, everyone loves that stupid Jacob. Oh, and there's the fact that everyone turns their noses up at the words of a sparkling vampire. Oh what the hell, who cares? Is that a necessary flaw to pick out too? What else can you learn from this highly intellectual book instead of critizing it?
I have a feeling I'm going to get a lot of hate, but i don't care. This is my opinion, and I stand for it.
Deal with it.
p.s. The Twilight movies SUCK. What a shame to the awe-inspiring books.
Catherine wrote: "You know what? People hate, and that is a fact of life. People will always hate Twilight. People will always hate Fallen. That's just their problem. And for the record, any time I've found a flaw to complain about it'd never because I was digging for it. It may surprise you but not all the people who hate these books were planning to when they read them. I honestly try to like what I read, otherwise why would I bother?
Is it just me or the word "hate" is indeed too much? I mean why would anyone hate a book? I can understand that they might not like it but hate it? I find it really funny and stupid! Anyway, Samantha even though our opinions are somehow different I really like your comments. They are impressive!
Samantha The Escapist wrote: "Catherine wrote: "You know what? People hate, and that is a fact of life. People will always hate Twilight. People will always hate Fallen. That's just their problem. LOL Nikki started this thread because she loved the book and didn't understand why people had so many negative things to say (please note, I did not say "hate"). She also invited everybody to comment on why they did or did not like it. I had no malice when I made my statement. I was just sharing why I didn't like Fallen.
Now, that's not to say that I won't try to read it again down the road and who knows? Maybe my opinion will change. But keep in mind, there are no attacks here, merely a discussion of opinion. Try not to get overly fired up when somebody doesn't share your same opinion.
I never said I hated this book. It simply wasn't for me but I absolutely respect the opinions of those who thought it was wonderful. There really is no right or wrong when it comes to books. Different literature and writing styles call to different people, ages and gender.
Oh, and I actually loved the Twilight books ever since they first came out and I don't think Bella was weak. Kristen Stewart on the other hand...(I just barfed a little in my mouth) Let's just say I'm not a fan ;)

I was also reading Veronica Roth's Divergent and Insurgent and I can't wait for the third book!
Recently I finished Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone and holy Wow! I'm hooked! :) I'm also about to start Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi since her first book Under the Never Sky was fantastic! I've been getting so many great recommendations lately, I can't keep up! I love YA!

Yeah I loved Touch of Power but you and I have hooked up in discussions on Snyder before, I'm not a fan of her style with second and third novels in trilogies :P Daughter of Smoke and Bone is very diverting indeed.
Lia wrote: "Is it just me or the word "hate" is indeed too much? I mean why would anyone hate a book? I can understand that they might not like it but hate it? I find it really funny and stupid! Anyway, Sama..."
Lia, I totally agree! I think it's stupid for a person to say they hate a book. Now there are definitely characters that I have wanted to punch in the face but that doesn't usually last long and it's the mark of a great writer if he or she can get the reader to become that passionate! Plus, it doesn't make me dislike the book, I just want to knock a character unconscious for a few... ;)
Oh, and Sam, another awesome book is Tammara Webber's Easy (my favorite book last year!)
I'll check that one out!But yes, it's silly to hate a book because it's an item that can't actively offend anyone unless they spend the time reading it.
Though my friend forced me through New Moon, so I'm allowed to hate that one :P
Teiamarie wrote: "Lia wrote: "Is it just me or the word "hate" is indeed too much? I mean why would anyone hate a book? I can understand that they might not like it but hate it? I find it really funny and stupid! ..."
Oh yes I know what you mean!! There are some characters that need to be slapped across the face! And I am glad that it's not just me who think that! Thank you!
And I will also check Samantha's and your recommendations to see if I get why you like them better! Maybe I will come to agree, maybe not!
There is no way this is anything like Twilight which is all about lame teen love, here actually the book makes you think is everything so black and white? I'm talking about their saying that the line between good and bad is thin and we have the proof of it (Cam) and it shows God in a different way, so I think that most of them actually didn't understand what the book is all about, though the third part is little bit boring until the few last chapters.

You know, people can pick up a book, plan to like it, understand everything about it, and still dislike it. Not liking the book means I examined its quality and found it wanting, not that I derped my way from page to page and declared it was stupid because I didn't get it.
I'm sorry to tell you that blurring the lines between good and evil is hardly an uncommon theme.
Not to be a dick about it and despite how it seems I'm not annoyed or anything, but that's such a standard thing to say when someone doesn't like what you like. And it's not fair, people have different opinions and it doesn't make either of them stupid. Saying I must not understand the book if I didn't like it is the exact same as me saying that only an idiot would like this book. I bet you take offense when people say things like that so maybe give a second thought before you start talking in absolutes.
/endrant I'll limit my further posts here to polite 1 lined comments when prompted :)
Okay, I've seen a few comments on here that are the other reason people dislike this book. It takes away from how much you can't like a book when the fans come and tell you that you're stupid for not liking it, or that you didn't understand it and that's why you didn't like it. I try to keep my enjoyment of a book separate from how much I like the fandom, but sometimes its difficult. There are some books which I would say are "okay" but not "great" and then the fans come and insult me for not loving it, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I read the rest of the series. This happened with Twilight and this happens with this book, too. People always say that "You didn't like it because you didn't get it" or "There's nothing us people, who have some decent sense, can do about it. Every person is entitled to their own opinion. But there's a line, and that line cannot be crossed" (which I found in a comment about halfway down this discussion) We are all entitled to our opinions. If you like something, and I don't, I'm not going to call you an idiot, even if I think whatever it is that we're talking about is the greatest thing ever! If I don't like something, and you do, I'm still not going to call you an idiot, even if I think that the thing you like is the stupidest thing ever! If you insult me for my opinion then I might want to call you an idiot, but I'm not going to. WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO OUR OWN OPINIONS. LIKING OR DISLIKING A BOOK DOES NOT MAKE US LACK "DECENT SENSE" It is possible for me to have a problem with a character that you really like, but we both understand the character. Maybe this analogy will help some of you understand. You like the color red, I don't like the color red. We both see the same color; red. We both understand it. We both see it. Neither of us made our decision arbitrarily, we both considered our own opinion, and then made a decision. Which one of us is stupid? Neither. Which one of us "lacks decent sense"? Neither. We both have opinions, but just because they are different, it doesn't mean one of them is wrong.
This discussion is getting bigger and bigger and I think I should stop coming back anymore. I just want to leave this group by saying my last opinion. If anyone doesn't like the book and criticize it without offending the author or the fandom, then I am ok with it. It's their right to have any opinion they like. If anyone comes in here and insults the book and the author... then I am not ok with it. You don't like it? Then fine! But it's wrong to "hate". That what's bothers me. But... same goes for those who like the book. They can't just insult those who don't like it. That's wrong too. I like having peaceful conversation with those who don't like it. It's like trading opinions and maybe I can see things in a different way. But I just can't stand what's going on in here. I won't come back again. It's tiring!Tiare wrote: "Maybe this analogy will help some of you understand. You like the color red, I don't like the color red. We both see the same color; red. We both understand it. But why don't you like red? It's a nice color! Ok I was just kidding. I like your thoughts in general and I do get your point!
I was more annoyed that nothing interesting happened for 90% of the book. I understand wanting to have set up for the series, but that doesn't mean something interesting can;t happen too. There are tons of other series that have both set up and an actual plot too. If it takes until the last twenty pages for something interesting to happen in your book, you're doing it wrong.
I really enjoyed these books. I don't see the similarities between this and twilight, but I thought it was similar to hush hush. However, I could only read the first hush hush and I couldn't stop reading fallen.
There was just one too many awkward encounters and obvious answers, not to mention the creepy stalking. Whether you like that sort of thing or not, however you would prefer to word it, just depends on your overall outlook on life. Luce didn't seem too dependent. The whole love triangle thing is universal to most YA books; Twilight is just often viewed as the ringleader. I didn't find the Twilight books to be all that bad, it was the characters that bothered me. The movies are awful. Plain awful. And there is a line between "just saying" and "just insulting". Seriously, its just a book!
I loved them and they were awesome reads. They are NOTHING like twilight; they were unique and I loved them--especially the first. I don't understand what the huge deal with people having to go around and saying how 'horrible' it is. If you don't like it fine, I have no say in that, but don't keep pestering about it and being just that; a pest. It's a book, which is something meant to be enjoyed. If you didn't like it, fine by me, but other people might. Leave it be.
Paige,On page 1 of the discussions for this book I only see one thread that's sorta mean to the book and another that's asking if it's worth the read.
Where are you seeing all this hate? I mean a lot of reviews are negative but that's what people are writing in their own space of this site. Beyond that people are giving their negative opinions on the book in this thread because they were asked.
Actually I loved this specific book but ive basically grown to hate the whole series after the ending. Feel free to read my review for it
I like Fallen series, although I keep getting an annoying deja vu feeling to the end of the story, I still love it.I don't actually care what haters think about books. People can dislike some books but I think it needs so much energy hating a book. Why would anyone wasting their time hating certain books? If they don't like the book, they can stop reading it without wasting their precious time continuing reading and ended up hating it.
I don't get all of the hate comments posted here. I really enjoyed this book, but to me, it seemed a little bit like the Evermore Series, what with the undying boyfriend, reincarnating girlfriend, and the fact that they love each other in every single one of her lives. Although it was a little hard to start, it was still really good. Once you get into it, it is a little hard to put down. Can't wait to read the second one!
The reason why I disliked this series is that after the second book in the series it got SO confusing with whose on what side. And the end of Passion made it even worse. I still haven't even read the last one because I just don't want to deal with it.
Who knew this book could inspire so much discussion! I sound surprised mostly because it seemed like such a 'blah' (a technical description) kind of book. In fact my dislike of it was only JUST enough to warrant my clicking on this thread to comment. I was just going to say;"weak female protagonist, weak plot line. Nuff said."
To reference something someone above said, I was little over being told how epic this love story was and I found the female protagonist so bland I couldn't bring myself to care about what happened to her or the cast of angel-thousands enrolled at the same school.
Personality folks, lets try some of that when writing up characters your readers pay money to read.
I only purchased the first book and it annoys me when I don't have complete series in my collection...... That burden in this instance I will happily bear.
I wish they really make a movie from Fallen series. It will shock everyone. I remember that Twilight was not a big hit until the movie was released and little and adult Twilighters and Twihards scored the movie into something so big. Bella is so annoying and lame. Edward is handsome but a stalker and over protective. Jacob is about muscle and a die-hard lover, before he is imprinted to his 'eternal' love's baby.
What has come out of them? Millions of dollar. Millions of fans and haters.
I actually loved this book but the downside was that I HATED THE FOLLOWING BOOKS OF THE SERIES I just felt like they were dragging. But the first book was really amazing I truly loved it!
I absolutely loved the series. I thought the love story was amazing, it might not hit you in the first book but it's a love that you have to follow through the whole series to understand just how big it is. As much as enjoyed it, the second book was a let down. Not much happened and I think this is a lot to do with why people just stopped reading, which is a shame because if you carried on the books became so much deeper and you're understanding of their love became easy to see.
They are on my fave book shelf along with my other favourite love stories, I have read them twice and I will one day read them again :)

I found all the books to be quite different from anything else i have read and i loved it, each to their own but to people put off by the reviews hear me out. If you love fantasy dark and gloomy surroundings, supernatural and romances then you will love this book and those after it.
Also tell me why you guys love/hate it. c:
