Solved - YA fantasy trilogy about mages who get powers from crystals [s]

Hey guys, I'm new here, and trying to find the name of a book I read about ten years ago... I remember the book was about mages, who got their powers from crystals... The main character was a male who had 'fire and earth' crystals and I know there was also a girl who was an empath involved somehow... I seem to remember that he book was actually three books housed in one cover (a trilogy) but I'm not super sure about that.

Some Otheer details (view spoiler)[ the man eventually has his crystals broken and kinda goes crazy, smashing into a rack full of them and linking with too many at once

The crystals are actually 'demons' or something similar that form a symbiotic link withy he Mage.

The empath girl helps a homeless guy get some action with a snobby girl only to find out she stuffed her bra (just a funny scene I think I remember) (hide spoiler)]

It's by Janny Wurts and is The Cycle of Fire. It was originally published as three seperate books.
