Sarah (sarah_bean) My favorite movie adaptions are the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. The Harry Potter movies were pretty good too, although some of the last ones fell a little short for me.

I think Golden Compass and Percy Jackson were both completely butchered. They were awful. I'd probably like Percy Jackson better if I'd never read the book, but since I have, I hated how much they changed the story.

I'm really worried about the Mortal Intruments: City of Bones movie adaption. I absolutely love the books - it's one of my favorite series - and the preview looks great, but I'm afraid of how much they'll change...

Lauren (originally_elle) | 250 comments YES!!! I agree completely that they BUTCHERED the Golden Compass!
it's probably why they never followed through with the sequels...

message 153: by Laura (new)

Laura I was so sad that the second and third books of His Dark Materials was never finished. Granted the first movie wasn't filling in all the gaps but I thought it was good. Good enough that it inspired me to read all three books. :) Imagine what I would have missed out on. :P

Favourite movie adaptation: Sense and Sensibility

I agree with Helena- the movie adaptation of The Help did no justice to the book. I was scared for the characters in the book and the movie seemed to have too much of a comical tone to it.

message 155: by Jolene (new)

Jolene (klyoptarice) | 15 comments I really hated the movies of Eclips and Breaking Dawn. Specially the second part of Breaking Dawn.
Also, The Hungergames wasn't that good either, to be honest.
And though the movie isn't finished I really think Vampire Academy- Blood Sisters is going to suck. The books are amazing, but the actors they choose aren't even close to the characters... In my opinion.

message 156: by Jolene (new)

Jolene (klyoptarice) | 15 comments Oh and the best... Let me think about that.
I really did like Twilight, I've watched it a lot.
(But I did see the movie before I read the book...)

message 157: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kcs216) Worst: The Host
Best: Perks of Being a Wallflower (probably because it was directed by the author)

message 158: by Sami (new)

Sami | 14 comments Ohh I heard the Princess Bride was directed by the author too - that was quite good! I suppose the best are where the author is properly involved - casting, scriptwriting, the lot.

I didn't think Perks of Being a Wallflower was that good of a movie adaptation. But that's just me I guess.

I haven't read the book but I think they could have made the movie a little more serious.

Percy Jackson was TERRIBLE

message 162: by Nelly (new)

Nelly Best; The Princess Bride, Bridget Jones Diary, 10 things I hate about you - I LOVE this movie, but actually hate the play!, The Notebook - I could barely make it through this book, but the movie much improved on it, it's one of my favourite movies!
Worst; One Day. I hated this movie! It is one of my favourite books and the movie just completely ruined it for me, which was mainly due to Anne Hathaways terrible accent!

I agree a lot. The books are very good and the film awful.

I totally agree.

message 166: by Anne (new)

Anne (annetea) | 6 comments Eragon movie was awful. Probably why no more in the book series were made into movies. Percy Jackson also sucked!

message 167: by melissa (new)

melissa (liss__interrupted) i know its not a movie but I think that hbo is doing an excellent job with the game of thrones series. although they have changed a few things that were done in the books they are still doing an awesome job (so far).
The worst has to be the twilight series.. I really enjoyed the books but could they have gotten worse actors to be in those movies. wth

However, if you read the books first then the films don't live up to expectations.

message 169: by Ben (new)

Ben White-Horne (BenjaminWhite-Horne) | 16 comments Whatever comes first (film or book) is generally the better of the two. For example, the movie for "Animal Farm" is terrible, but the book came first. On the other hand, the book of "Ratatouille" is also bad, and the book came first.

message 170: by Angie (new)

Angie CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR...books were great, but that thing that called a movie? I was glad I had only paid $5 for the DVD so it didn't hurt when I took the DVD & cut it in 1/2. I am so glad that I read/listened to the books before the movie.

Laura | 168 comments Best adaptations I've seen are neverwhere and audition

message 172: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 1 comments I really can't say which one is the best because the books I love the most, the movie's haven't come out yet. Well, you know, except for the Harry Potter series.

But the worst was definitely Percy Jackson and the Olympians. They destroyed it by SPOILERS(I think?) making them 16 already. I mean, the ENTIRE POINT OF THE FREAKING STORY IS THE PROPHECY WHERE ONE OF THE BIG THREE'S KIDS ARE SUPPOSED TO TURN 16. Yet, oh look, they're already 16. And Annabeth's hair was brown in the movie. They left out so many things that would effect what the other movie's will have.

message 173: by Anne (new)

Anne Conley (anneconley) I watched The Life of Pi last night, and thought it was a pretty good adaptation of the book. I was actually excited to see it, because I knew it would be visually spectacular, and it didn't disappoint. I thought it also hit the thematic stuff pretty well, too.

Tell me about it! But Sea of Monsters is 10x more accurate.

message 175: by Laura (new)

Laura | 168 comments Angelas ashes I felt was a good adaptation as well

message 176: by Mary (new)

Mary | 14 comments The book the Clan of the Cave Bear is one of my favorites but I hated the movie.

message 177: by Arwen (new)

Arwen Twilight- ugh no no no

message 178: by Kirra (new)

Kirra | 12 comments Percy Jackson and Eragon were good books, but terrible movie adaptions.
Hating Alison Ashely the movie was better than the book.
It's not a book but I think Avatar: The Last Airbender deserves a minute of silence for its movie adaption.

message 179: by Occhiiki (last edited Apr 14, 2013 11:18PM) (new)

Occhiiki (ionapenn) | 5 comments Not the best but good adaptations are The Chronicles of Narnia movies, but it's a bit unpopular. I do wish they make a movie after Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

message 180: by [deleted user] (new)

Not a book but a comic - avatar (worst adapt ever!!!) err not the James Cameron Avatar
Best - I like the Coen brother's True Grit

message 181: by Laura (new)

Laura | 168 comments I was a bit disappointed with the watchmen film they changed the ending

message 182: by ✴ eve ☾ (new)

✴ eve ☾ (evefken) I enjoyed the Percy Jackson books tremendously, but The Lightning Thief movie was a huge let down. I wish they started them young like in the books instead of 16.

message 183: by Andreea (new)

Andreea Actually there is a movie after The Voyage of the Dawn Trender...and i really liked it

message 184: by Preety (new)

Preety Sharma | 7 comments i think angels and demons is one of the worst movie adaptation. it is just nit good at any level.

message 185: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (temagami) | 54 comments Andrea,
Do you mean The Voyage of the Dan Treader from the Narnia novels?

message 186: by L.c. (new)

L.c. Dale (lcdale) | 2 comments I'm in the middle of preparing a day school on literary adaptations to film and t.v. so this debate is of great interest to me. I began thinking that films and t.v. adaptations should be faithful to the book otherwise what's the point. After several weeks of studying literary and film study essays on the subject and thinking about my own favourite books (and films) I'm coming round to a different view. That film and television are creative media in their own right and that books should be a springboard for creating something new. I know it's hard when you've read a book and loved it and you want to see it on the big screen but the way you have imagined the characters isn't going to be the same as the author's or the director's so there's always going to be a mismatch somewhere along the way so I'm trying to look at films of my favourite books in a different way. That isn't to say I'm not going to be disappointed on occasions- The Horse Whisperer will never be the film it could have been if Robert Redford hadn't changed the ending, the same with My Sister's Keeper (for the same reason) and I'm trying to be open minded in advance of Baz Luhrman's version of the Great Gatsby. Nevertheless there are some gems out there. The Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender is not faithful to the book but does capture the atmosphere and romance of one of the best novels ever written and the Keira Knightley Pride and Prejudice is pretty good too.

I agree with basically everything that you just said! I dislike when things are pointlessly changed, but sometimes I like it when a classic book has a liberal adaptation, because there are also the more faithful versions out there! I think the worst thing, though, for any movie, is when a bad actor is in it, especially as the main part!

message 188: by Andreea (new)

Andreea Yes I mean the Voyage of the Dawn Treader from the Narnia chronicles...You should see it,it's really nice

I did and I liked it...I thought they might do another movie from that series.

Mais (maisdavid) | 16 comments Warm bodies was good no GREAT and Perks was such a beautiful Movie.. Beautiful Creatures was a disappointment and so was Percy Jackson I think

message 191: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2 comments Chuck Palauhnick's Fight Club was perfectly captured. Mind you, I saw the film first. I don't watch adaptations of favourite books because they usually make a right mess of them. Exceptions to the rule being Henry James's The Turn of the Screw made into The Innocents, directed by the wonderful Jack Clayton and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House filmed as The Haunting (1963) by Robert Wise. For some reason they changed the name of the Doctor from John Montague to Markway ... to Americanise it perhaps?

message 192: by Laura (new)

message 193: by Trish (new)

message 194: by Betina (new)

Rebecca was the only movie which showed full justice to the book. all other times i have been extremely disappointed with the movies.

message 196: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (cannibalduck) | 5 comments The lightning thief and Eragon.
The Eragon movie was so terrible, silly and nonsense.Arya isn't an elf in the movie, Saphira has feathered wings and many more.. I'd rather they did not make a movie although the book was awesome.
The Lightning Thief was also terrible. There are many missing characters ( Clarisse, Mr. D ,Nancy Bobofit....)and Percy was already sixteen. How are they going to follow the prophecy now that there is a Sea of Monsters movie? Though Logan Lerman is gorgeous.

So true! (in re to the Percy Jackson comment)

But I have to admit I wouldn't have wanted to see a little 11 or 12 year old running around the screen playing Percy Jackson.

Two Towers had me in full-on nerd rage. That movie was nothing like the book.
