Bram | 115 comments Hi,

I've been adding a number of editions of books I own that are not yet in the DB and I came across two ways of handling series that are printed in multiple languages.

Should a new Series be created for each language? Or should all editions (in this case all languages) be added to the same series?

Example series by Markus Heitz:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/list...
The author writes in German so the "original" series are in German:
Ulldart - Die Zeit des Neuen (https://www.goodreads.com/series/5174...)
But a Dutch version of this series exists as well:
Uldart - De nieuwe tijd (https://www.goodreads.com/series/1297...)

Strangely the Series witht he Dutch name has an edition in German in it:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Which is also in the German Series.

And the German series displays three books, one of them with a Dutch title.

What confuses me further is that in "my books" I sometimes see the series in the original language and sometimes the translation.
And opening the book that has a translated series name in "my books" will still show the original German series info.

I couldn't find more information on this so I don't know what I should add in the title field when I add new editions.

I added the following editions:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... (this one is shown with the translated series in "my books")

Thanks in advance

Bram

lethe | 16361 comments Please excuse my drive-by commenting.

From the manual: Please do not add a new series for each language the books have been published in, unless the numbering of the books differs from that of the existing series. (https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3...)

ETA All editions will get all existing series titles added, if they are combined with other-language editions.

Bram | 115 comments Hi Lethe,

Thanks so I guess the Dutch series I found is a mistake.

A related question: When I start to add a new edition of https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... the suggested title is "Het oog van Tzulan (De donkere tijd, #4)" which has the series translated. Even though the title of the edition I'm starting from https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... is "Het oog van Tzulan (Ulldart - Die Dunkle Zeit #4)"

Which title should I use?

Thanks in advance.

lethe | 16361 comments It is OK to state the Dutch series title in the title field, like this:
Het oog van Tzulan (De donkere tijd, #4)
In f.e. the editions page you can then see the series titles for the different languages. On the book page, you will only see the title that is shown in the series field.

On the series pages, only the edition that is most popular (added by most users) is shown.
So when I look at the German series, the German edition of book 1 and book 2 are most shelved by GR users; for book 3 the Dutch edition is most popular/most shelved.

...so I guess the Dutch series I found is a mistake.
I deleted the Dutch series.
