Hey guys!

I'm putting together the new website, but i can't decide what to use as the background image. Any suggestions?

I actually found something like that!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

There's gotta be an artist around here who'd do up a nice background with a dragon and some books.

You guys should be seeing the new site within the hour! Send any suggestions my way!

Krystle ~A Booknatic~ (sueanne1812) I love the countless books on shelves idea. maybe a gothic /medieval setting or theme. Dunno

Cool — great minds must think alike.

Dara, it looks cool, but holds too few books!

message 14: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments Oh I like that background a lot! Love the ladder and I can only imagine there must be a large fireplace somewhere near.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I miss the shield.

message 16: by Noah (new)

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments I like the background, but I wonder if it could be more scifi/fantasy-ish. Maybe those with mad art skills could take the background image and hide some sword and laser type easter eggs in there.

That is simply fantastic.

i probably shouldn't admit this, but when i first saw the new background image, it reminded me of pottermore -- and i immediately did a quick mouse-over of all the books to check for easter eggs.

I'm not thrilled with it. I'm also not a web designer. Like I said, suggestions welcome!

message 20: by Martin (new)

Martin | 2 comments How about a dragon on a horde of books instead of gold facing off against a hero in a spacesuit with a sword and a laser?

message 21: by Martin (new)

Martin | 2 comments it probably shouldn't breath fire though...

message 22: by Camilla (new)

Camilla (repressedpauper) I actually rather like the look now, but the old books seem very Sword. Maybe some Laser should be added somehow. I love the text and sidebar links over a white background. Much cleaner.

message 23: by Noah (last edited Feb 07, 2013 12:13AM) (new)

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments One more suggestion. What about Photoshopping titles of books we've read in the club on to the covers in the picture? Oh, and if you like the book theme, why not take a picture of the bookshelf from the sword and laser set and use it? It's already really cool looking.

message 24: by D. H. (new)

D. H. | 100 comments I really like the background. It's understated which is great. I wish the space between the menu bar and the text was smaller. The text part is really easy to read. That's cool.

Michelle (deckfullojokers) | 55 comments I'm not sure if it's due to the redesign or perhaps some local issue, but the site is very slow and the links on the side bar do not load properly. Could very well be a connection issue, but I haven't had that issue with other sites today.

I liked it because it reminded me of Harry Potter.

message 32: by Robert of Dale (new)

Robert of Dale (r_dale) | 185 comments How about a photograph featuring a library composed of many (since "all" would be highly difficult/expensive) of the past S&L picks.

For that matter, a photo of our illustrious host's hands toasting with a bejeweled goblet in Veronica's hand, and a clear glass of blue liquid (Romulan Ale) in Tom's, with the video show bar's backdrop would be a cool composition.

Could be the DNS, but I'm not having any issues with loading.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Mobile site is really plain. Any chance of sprucing it up a bit? And is there a way to switch to the regular site?

Also, experiencing slow load time as well.

message 35: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments I wonder if a banner across the top would balance the look? I like the background and especially like the idea of having titles that would be recognizable. I also wonder if there would be a way to keep the sidebar menu from scrolling? Also the sidebar menu seems overly wide for the text each bar holds, what would it look like if this was shortened to still retain the menu text while reducing the background coverage?

Just thoughts, in no way am I a design artist.
I don't seem to be experiencing loading issues.

message 36: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments It'd be cool if the books on the shelves could all be titles of S&L picks.

The busier the background the slow the page loads.
Which is a consideration when using a smart phone.

At the moment its clean, elegant and loads quickly.
Needs more swirling GIFs.

message 41: by Rasnac (last edited Feb 07, 2013 06:23PM) (new)

Rasnac | 336 comments Loved the background. A banner at top with S&L shield would be cool. And maybe background color of blog posts(I have no idea what it is called) might be another colour than simple white, maybe colour and texture of old print paper?

Something like this:

I can't bring over the elements from the old website cleanly, it was all custom designed and I don't have the graphics.

message 43: by Mike (new)

Mike Thicke (mikethicke) | 70 comments * I think there should be a little more branding---doesn't have to be a banner, but shouldn't the logo be somewhere?

* In the absence of a banner, the content starts pretty far down. I guess you're trying to show off the bookshelf background, but it looks a little off to me eye.

* If I make the window quite tall in Chrome, a gap between the top of the background image and the top of the window appears. Is there something funky going on with how the background image is aligned?

message 44: by Noah (new)

Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments Maybe you could hold a contest for fans to submit new background ideas. Surely there must be some talented artists in the community.

Don't have them or aren't permitted to use them?? Have you tried dumping things out of an archive.org snapshot of the site??

message 46: by Lepton (new)

Lepton | 176 comments Yeah almost all the assets can be gleaned from archive.org. I'm sure that someone would be more than willing to recreate the site for you guys.

Listen to this guy. In the end, simplicity is really best, especially for the people on smart phones and tablets. And I love the white background. Very easy on the eyes. It doesn't have to look stunning, really. It's attractive and it gets the job done.

I've never been happy with that image they used... it's a samurai, not even a medieval knight :(
