Amanda (amandabookworm) Anyone who has ever wondered to themselves about the "lost girls" of China who are often aborted, abandoned, adopted out or killed shortly after birth needs to read this book.
This book was compiled by a native of China who works in broadcast and journalism. She interviewed mothers she sought out as well as mothers she came across through work and in her daily life. Any notions we may have that these mothers are heartless will be done away by this book. We cannot know the feelings of every Chinese mother, but the ones in these accounts are often haunted by depression, guilt and what I would say is post traumatic stress disorder.
The girls and women of China are under enormous pressure to bear the sons of the rising generation. It is especially tragic that the daughters born before a son are the ones who are "taken away." While the daughters born after a son are accepted in the family and by the community.
This book is a must read for anyone who has heard of these baby girls in China and wondered to themselves how this could ever happen.
