Maira wrote: "you want mobi. for a case of exploding mangoes?"You want to send one as a gift? Lol, zahir hai. I read online now. Waise I don't think I'll read this.
i guess its more of fiction, since i am weak in history so my attempt to judge the accuracy could be wrong, anyhow i think the its the satirical story behind the real incident of Zia ul Haq's death.
I've finished reading it and am waiting for the discussion to start in March. But at the end I was left confused as to which of the characters were real and which were fictional. All of them were hilarious.
hey guys. so who's reading this?
good good. hope you like it and tell us what you think :)
Must read book frndz. M.Hanif joined Pak Air Force in 80's and then later he left PAF and opted for journalism as proffesion.
In Pakistan, Like Liaqat Ali Khan Murder case , Zia crash investigations were also not presented before the people and it gave birth to conspiracy theories.
So,M.Hanif successfully fictionalizd entire incident in a comic manner.
Initial two chapters are bit boring as it gives details regaring PAF Base life but later u will enjoy it.
Esp when u read abt the description of Zia ul Haq's wife and their relationship, u will love it.
And interestingly when Zia son,Ijaz Ul Haq, politcian, was asked to comment abt this book; he got annoyed and started criticising Hanif infront of media men.
a superb book. at one point while reading, you will get confuse whether its a fiction or real story.very nicely structured.
I am sure you will become a fan of Mohammed Hanif after reading this.
I just read it a couple of days ago, It is a good read, I loved the way Character of General Zia was presented.
It was a fabulous book and an entertaining read. A nicely written satire which one simply cannot take seriously. I was expecting something more political but was pleasantly surprised. The characters were all well thought out and planned. The ending, I would never have thought out in a hundred years as we find Zia Ul Haq attacked in so many different ways we find his end was inevitable even if the case of mangoes hadn't been put on board. Does anyone know how it was received in Pakistan, despite Zia Ul Haq's son not liking it?
There are a few stains of immature writing in the book, particularly at points where a pointless use of swear words have been employed, but I guess that's a given considering it's Hanifs first attempt. A brilliant attempt nevertheless that would keep you turning the pages all day long. I finished it in a week, which is pretty fast for slow readers like myself.
