Terri | 19576 comments I saw this one was released this year.

Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz Moriarty

From this series:

Book 1: The House of Silk A Sherlock Holmes Novel by Anthony Horowitz
Book 1.5 The Three Monarchs by Anthony Horowitz

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I'm not too keen on trying the new one. I tried "House of Silk" last year, I think it was, and didn't like it.

The Holmes/Watson friendship was very cold.

message 303: by Histolicious (new)

Histolicious Histolicious Oh well.

I dont know why, but I cant really get in these Holmes-stuff.

Years ago I read the original. And I liked it, not over the top, but ... okay.

A few weeks ago I started Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes, #2) by Anthony Horowitz and believe it or not, I guessed the major plottwist on p. 50. And the book was totaly ruined for me.
I asked someone who already read it, if I was right and that was that. I Couldnt finish it. Why should I?
Damn.

Dust and Shadow An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson by Lyndsay Faye I love the authors Tim Wilde Mysteries, but this one. Cant get into it. It doesnt work for me.

The Devil's Grin (An Anna Kronberg Thriller) by Annelie Wendeberg I LOVE Annelie Wendeberg. And I really enjoyed this one. BUT in my opinion, Holmes was only the candy, why the most people buyed the book in the first place. Anna Kronberg doesnt need Holmes. Really, she can do it all on her own. Okay, she had a crush on him, I understand why, but ... yeah Holmes is just a hook, to catch readers here.

What´s wrong with me?
I really try to like Holmes Books, but I really cant get into the stuff
:O

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Anthony Horowitz is a crap Holmesian writer in my opinion.

Try David Stuart Davies

He's pretty consistent and close to the original stories in both the friendship and the spirit of the books.

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Scroll of the Dead is one of my favourites.

message 305: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Exactly Brian. I can forgive a pastiche writer a lot if they are able to capture that beautiful friendship.

Just read one last night that I really enjoyed. The Will of the Dead

Dawn (caveatlector) It’s more than a century since the world’s most famous literary detective made his appearance, but our appetite for his startling deductions is undiminished. Adam Frost and Jim Kynvin go back to the stories in search of data to explain his enduring appeal

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Interesting. :)

message 309: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I thought it was pretty cool, laying it all out in stats is a fun way to look at things.

message 310: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments It is. :)

message 311: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1885 comments Never realised that ACD mentions 80 other non written cases in the stories.

message 312: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Oh yeah. He was a real bugger for that. Tantalising readers with cases that "the world wasn't ready for".

Probably the most famous would be the Giant Rat of Sumatra. A lot of pastiche authors have played with that one.

message 313: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I am a very happy bunny at the moment. The first trailer for the Victorian "Sherlock" special has been released.

On first (second, and third) viewing it appears they are being wonderfully faithfully to the traditional Holmes/Watson. I think, no I KNOW, I will enjoy the special a hell of a lot more than I enjoyed season 3.

message 314: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My London trip is next week. I have two Sherlock Holmes treats planned. First is a visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum, the other is the proms concert "Sherlock Holmes - The Music of the Mind".

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Rest in Peace Douglas Wilmer... Sherlock Holmes for the BBC many moons ago. Also sent up the role in the wonderful Gene Wilder film "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother".

Douglas was 96.

message 319: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments This is one of the best Sherlock Holmes pastiches I've read in a while.

message 321: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I knooowwwwww. And the trailer, combined with the promo photo of Sherlock's violin with a broken string is making me very uneasy about this season.

Allison | 1704 comments I watched the first trailer for the upcoming season and there's a few scenes where even Sherlock looks terrified!! Whhhhaaaatttt!

message 326: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Oct 26, 2016 07:16PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Yeah. Anything that can frighten Sherlock bloody terrifies me!

And Mary...killing people again!

I find myself wondering just what it is that Mycroft has done for Mrs Hudson to call him a reptile and tell him to get out of her house!

message 327: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Hahaha I LOVED that scene!! You go Mrs. Hudson!!

message 328: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I adore Una Stubbs. She is perfect as Mrs Hudson.

Terri | 19576 comments Ah..*cough* drum roll please....

Our own Margaret Walsh has been published. Tales from The Stranger's Room contains Margaret's short story.

I do believe all royalties go to charity, but not certain.

Sherlock Holmes: Tales from the Stranger's Room - Volume 3 Sherlock Holmes Tales from the Stranger's Room - Volume 3 by David Ruffle

message 331: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Thank you, Terri. :)

And, yes, all royalties are going to charity.

The charity is Stepping Stones, a school for special needs children that now occupies Undershaw, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's home where he wrote "The Hound of the Baskervilles".

Congratulations, Margaret!
That's wonderful news. I'm so happy for you. And it's great that the royalties are being donated to a charity that works with special needs children. You must be so excited.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I am, Tamara. It's spurred me to write a Sherlock Holmes pastiche. The editor David Ruffle and another writer Narrelle Harris have been massively encouraging.

I'm about a quarter of the way into writing it. The two months of research before starting, into Victorian vice and prostitution was very interesting as well.

I even went and paid all the bills today so that I knew the purchase wasn't going to bounce my damn credit card. hehe.

Terri | 19576 comments The idiot brain thing got better. I sat here at the laptop and forced myself to remember my password. Too stubborn to reset it.

Once I remembered it and was in, I couldn't for the life of me remember the title or author. I spent ages searching A Stranger's Chair..Stranger's Chair...Mark Duffle...Stranger's Duffle..until I gave up and came to this thread to check. Only to find that what I should have been searching for on Book Depository was A Stranger's Room by David Ruffle.

A miracle it was that I then managed to remember my Paypal password. :/

Oh well...I got there in the end.
I am the proud new owner of Margaret's first published piece.
