Mary Catelli | 58 comments What other authors might you recommend to Pratchett's fans as like his work?

Please be specific about how it resembles, since many writers are like him in various ways.

Mary Catelli | 58 comments If what you like is the zany worlds and world-building, you might like to try Jasper Fforde, who is in some respect even wackier.

Marlou Heijnen | 3 comments I personally really like Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell (they're a team). While their demographic consists more of children, and they aren't as philosophical as Pterry, they are very funny and have the same tendecy to poke fun at common fantasy clichés and tropes. Plus, as a bonus, they have pictures!

I agree with Marlou on that recommendation! I remember reading this series when I was younger: Beyond the Deep Woods

Douglas (pegamooseg) | 1 comments Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams are two of my favorite authors. I've had the pleasure of meeting both and hearing them speak (although, not at the same time). They both inspire my writing. I'm not saying I try to emulate their writing style. My style is my own. But, I love their works as I tend to mostly write absurd fiction, and I aspire to their greatness.

I have two published works: one novel and one collection of short stories. I hope to connect with more people who might appreciate my writing, too. I ask the group's and moderator's permissions to post links to my works (with Smashwords discount codes).

As for Robert Rankin...I've read one book, which was enough for me. I found the content juvenile for my tastes, an interesting premise poorly executed, and a disappointing ending. Even though I didn't care for the book, I keep it on my shelf to inspire me to create better works.

I will need to check out Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell.

Louise | 3 comments A. Lee Martinez. I read "A Nameless Witch" and really enjoyed it. One day I will read more of his work.
I'm sure many of my fellow Terry Pratchett fans can relate to that feeling of foreboding. That nothing will ever be as good as him. A Nameless Witch was a tiny ray of sunshine on that bleak outlook.

Ian | 9 comments I absolutely know the feeling, anyone who is 'like' Sir Pterry is likely to be a pale imitation.
When my daughter was asking the same question recently I name checked Ben Aaronovitch and his Rivers of London series. There are some funny asides and I'm pretty sure it was Pratchett's elves in his latest book.

message 8: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 58 comments Let us say that Pratchett and Aaronovitch were drawing on a common folkloric source. Elves were a lot less pretty, before the fluttery fairy types.

message 9: by Ian (new)

Ian | 9 comments To be clear I wasn't suggesting any hint of plagiarism, the books are very different but I suspect any British genre author is going to be aware of Pratchett's work, it felt like a nod to Lord and Ladies, and Pterry, by this point has probably also become part of the folkloric sources!

Igy The Book Hermit Mr. Pratchett is in a class all his own. I tried to read "Zanth" and the "Myth" series and will not go into how I feel about them, Mr. Pratchett has no one in his class.

Robert (robertgilescampbell) I would have to say we're lucky Pratchett has given us as much as he did and the reread value is endless bucause and I think we all agree there's no other author like him.

Zanath was OK
MythAdventures ... I couldn't get past page 10 :( should I try again?

Hitchhiker's. .. AMAZING!!!

another good comedic fantasy....nothing like Sir Terry mind you...
