There were a lot of bestiaries written during/around the Middle Ages. Was this a reprint of something with illustrations from that time or are you talking about a modern version?
Can you remember anything about the style of the drawings?
You said it was in the children's section, was this a thin book, or something longer than the usual sort of kid's picture book?
It's unlikely to help, but the chicken creatures are probably something like a cockatrice.
ETA and when did you read it? Knowing if it was five years ago or twenty will help rule out books that were published after the time you read it.

I'd like to mention, just to keep the context of this question going, that I think I almost certainly owned this book as a child, and I have just been waiting for a chance to look through my old books to find the title. The description of the odd looking elephant is particularly salient. Whether it still exists in my old library is another question, so I was holding off on commenting until I could look.
I am still looking. I'm sorry I never notice the notifications thing. It was definitely published before 1998. By thin, I don't mean a picture book. It was hardcover. I don't think it was written in the middle ages. I don't remember much about the writing, but I know it didn't feel too out of place in that sense. If it was, for instance, from the 1700's, it was definitely a reprint, at least in the sense of modernizing the language. I'm sorry I have so little to go on. I'll remember to check up on this thread, and if nothing else pops up, I'll delete it and leave it to fate. Thank you for spending time on this.

Oh, okay! I promise I won't give up then! I just felt bad that I had left it for so long. Hopefully someone will help me find it by the time I have children to read it to :DA distinguishing detail for those helping. There isn't an actual narrative. They are all just entries on the animals, like profiles.
No, it's not a Borges. It doesn't have anything too pop culture in it (though I remember some showing up in Harry Potter). And to better help with Aerulan's questions, the pictures did look like wood carvings.

I know they stocked it in the children's non-fiction section of my old library, but I can't find it there now, and I think it was an odd place to catalog it.
