Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments This month for our read-along we will be reading the Mortal Instruments series starting with City Of Bones. Clary, the heroine is the strong headed, stubborn, brave gal we all know and love. And of course there is Jace (The hunky guy on the cover!).

My Opinion ~
I didn't really like City Of Bones, it definately got ruined by the hype. It was just OK for me, not really wow or amazing. I can really remeber the details, mainly because I read it about 1 and a half years ago.

What's your opinion?

message 2: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Green I read it in the summer, so about six months ago. I really enjoyed it and read the whole thing in only about three days, I think.

It wasn't the most amazing book I have every read or anything, but I really did like it. I'm going to look for the second one sometime soon-ish.

message 3: by Sina (new)

Sina | 429 comments I have read everyone that had gotten out, and I love it. I live the way the author writes because I learned new things all the time!

message 4: by Emily (new)

Emily (emily21) | 217 comments I actually really enjoyed City of Bones. I thought it was a great book with a great heroine. Jace was a little cliche being so devastatingly handsome and cocky. However, I enjoyed interaction between all the characters. I agree that it wasn't the most amazing book in the world, but it kept me interested enough to read the rest.

Elizabeth | 2466 comments I saw the whole series at a yard sale and asked the lady how much and she grabbed the books and said these are so not for sale so i went a bought the first one to see if it was really that good and it was so good I couldn't stop myself and ended up with all the books in a matter of two weeks city of bones was my gateway book it started my addiction i love them clary is thrown into a whole world she didn't know even existed by a boy she is drawn to but full of attitude whats not to love

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I've read City of Bones a couple times, and I loved reading it every single time. I love how now I have a great excuse to read it again!

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments l have seen the trailers for the movie and I think the person they have playing Jace does not fit anything I pictured I'm a little disappointed I hope my opinion changes after I see the movie

message 8: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments I don't know about Lily Collins being Clary..

message 9: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I just love the feeling when I realize I'm not the only one with a certain opinion. :-)

message 10: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments LOL, I really hate it when the person casted for the movie looks nothing like you imagined.

message 11: by Kate (last edited Feb 04, 2013 11:21PM) (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I know, it can get annoying.

message 12: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments honestly I can't believe they cast him he does not fit the role at all I have read these book a couple of times ( if you know anyone that knows me don't believe them I have not read them too many times and I'm only on my first set of book I never wore any out) this person is not at all what I was picturing when they did the tailors for the book idk who that person was but he was much better than the one they got and I can't remember his name

message 13: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danielle_k) I could see someone like Alex Pettyfer better because Jamie Campbelle Bower was just the creepy vampire in Twilight but when I saw the trailer I thought he worked better than I thought, still not close but defo better than I was expecting

message 14: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments I agree he looks more like a creepy vampire than a teenage mortal fighting machine idk i am waiting for the movie it may surprise me

message 15: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments I just hope Lily Collins does Clary justice. She is a really great character.

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (Oceanwhisper) | 39 comments I just got City of Bones out of the library :D I hope it's as good and lives up to it's high reputation!

message 17: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments Don't let the hype kill it. The hype killed City Of Bones for me :(.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Danielle- Alex Pettyfer was actually their first choice for Jace, but he turned the role down, and Jamie Campbell Bower got it instead. I can't imagine why Alex would have declined the role. This could have been his big break. I mean, he's doing a lot of movies but nothing HUGE, and I think City of Bones will be huge.

I'm reading the book right now and enjoying it, but I have to agree with those who said that Lily Collins does not fit as Clary. In fact, I know this sounds soooo petty, but Lily Collins is distracting for me in any role. Her eyebrows are like two angry caterpillars glaring at me...daring me to drag my attention away from them and actually focus on the film...

And I feel bad saying that, because she's a pretty good actress. I just want to attack her with wax strips or something.

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Oh my gosh, I'm not the only person bothered by those eyebrows! I'm not alone. :)

message 20: by Simmaron (new)

Simmaron (mybookedlife) | 1119 comments No you aren't alone. Even I am bothered. He doesn't looks like Jace whom I have imagined . I had high hopes but after having a look on the lead character my hopes are all down. Now I don't expect it to be as exciting as book. Whereas Clary is fine but again I didn't like Simon. :(

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

See, I'm torn because I really do love Jamie Campbell Bower. He's such a great actor and I feel like he has an otherworldly look to him that lends itself well to the character. That being said, he doesn't look anything like I pictured Jace. But if he can come across as sardonic and witty, like Jace, I will probably be okay with his casting.

I'm wondering if I should re-watch all of Lily Collins's movies over and over again until I'm desensitized to the sight of the caterpillars. Then maybe I can pay attention to City of Bones...hmm...

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) :D

message 23: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments I have to agree that when I first saw Lily Collins my eyes where sucked to her eyebrows not the amazing dress she was wearing. I hope she does Clary justice.

message 24: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (warpedline) | 214 comments I LOVE TMI! I hope the movie is as good as the books... though I doubt it. I just really hope Jamie (actor for Jace) has managed to captured the arrogant, sarcastic, dead-pan hilarious essence that is Jace ;)

Can't wait for the movie! :)

Kate (kaitlins16) There's so much fan art for this book . . .
This is really cute:

Ugh. Must I say anymore? The entire plot was really boring. Clary(what kind of name is that?) was approaching "Bella annoyingness". Jace was far TOO perfect, and yes I've read the City of Glass. The supporting characters were paper copies of each other. Don't even get me started on Isabelle.

Ok, so I don't know how you managed to hate this book. Its my favourite bokk, and though I agree that Clary can be somewhat annoying at times, she is still an amazing character. And if you think that Jace is perfect, than you obviously only skimmed the series. All of the supporting characters have their own unique personalities and I have no clue what your problem with Isabelle is, except for the fact she can be kind of bitchy at times.

message 29: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I can honestly say that Clary doesn't bug me much. I know how she can be seen as annoying sometimes, but I've always liked her.

I hardly ever get annoyed with characters. When I do, my annoyance feels really obvious and strong.

message 30: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments I love this book I never once thought of Bella while reading it Clary seemed strong to me given the fact she wasnt raised to fight her entire life and had everything thrown at her at once how can any one compare Clary and Bella. Clary found out the love of her life was someone she couldn't be with and kept going Bella found out her love of her life was leaving and curled up in a ball in the middle of the wood

message 31: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments I just watched the newest trailer I love it the green house looks like another world

I agree. Clary and Bella are nothing alike. Clary only annoyed me when she was being reckless, and you knew it wasnt a good idea.

message 33: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 2466 comments Bella was very reckless were Clary tries not to be but Jace is so protective that Clary is forced to do the things she does

message 34: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments I think Clary is much much more of a heroine than Bella. Clary thinks for herself and she takes things into her own hands.

message 35: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (seaofbookstravel) | 6 comments I'm currently reading this book, and I never thought I would enjoy it. It's one of those books that you have to see for yourself 'if your going to like' you can't believe everyone's judgement you have to give the book a try. So far I give it a three out of five stars right now, most likely by the end it will have a four. It's only because the romance is a bit sour between Clary and Jace *ahem* Chapter 17 ;-) I'm hopping to see this retaliation ship develop more strongly.

message 36: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments Agreed Jenny, it put me off. I'm up to City of Glass but I don't think I will be reading it until a while.

message 37: by Simmaron (new)

Simmaron (mybookedlife) | 1119 comments CoG was my favourite. You'll love the ending for sure. It was epic. But after that take a break because some ppl think that the other books after CoG was not necessary. But I liked them though.

message 38: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (theycallmebookworm) | 1955 comments Thanks, I think City Of Glass has been bumped up my to-read list!

message 39: by Simmaron (new)

Simmaron (mybookedlife) | 1119 comments You'll love it. Clary becomes one kickass heroine in that, her dependency on Jace lessens and there're lots of things and ppl that are discovered in this one. Plus there's loads of adventure and action. And emotional tension between Jace and Clary increases .
